Wrestlers runners-up again

The Tallassee wrestling team reached the AHSAA Class 5A state duals championship match for the second straight year. Again, the Tigers came up a little short. Scottsboro beat THS 51-21 to win the crown on Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Like last year, the loss was Tallassee's first duals loss of the season. The Tigers (31-1) lost 38-33 in the state finals to Jasper in 2023.

"I am super proud of this group of young men.   They continue to take us to new heights," said Tallassee head coach John Mask. "Our goal is to win it all and we will never hide from that. Over the past 25 years, each group has elevated the expectations and really grown this sport at Tallassee."

Last year, Tallassee beat Gulf Shores to reach the championship. They did it again on Friday with a thrilling 36-31 victory reminiscent of last season's win.

"We started Friday with so much energy and wrestled possibly our best match of the season," Mask noted. "Our fans were really loud and the kids fed off the crowd and the energy. After defeating Gulf Shores we were not able to keep the momentum which is so vital in any sport."

The Tigers handed Gulf Shores just their second duals defeat clinching the win with Land Bell's win the 146-pound class. Bell won his match in the state championship round as well to improve to 41-0 this season. Ramon Lozada (122) remained unbeaten (30-0) winning both of his matches. Thomas Patterson (108) also went 2-0 on the day improving to 34-1.

"Scottsboro wreslted a great match," Mask added, "and was able to grab a hold of the match. We were not able to recover."

The season is not over however. Tallassee has two weeks of matches remaining including Senior Night/Homecoming on Thursday, Jan. 25 versus Russell County, Percy Julian and JAG at 5:30 p.m. In addition to the senior wrestlers, members from the THS 2014 state championship team will be recognized. A special presentation will follow the first match.

"We will get back to work and now focus our attention to the traditional state tourney in Huntsville. This is the individual bracket tourney held in February each year," said Mask. "Special thanks to all our fans and students who made the trip early Friday. We really appreciate your support. Also a special thanks to WTLS for broadcasting this event for everyone back home."
