Husqvarna store now open

by Michael Butler

Tallassee now has a full-line Husqvarna store. Tallassee Power & Equipment opened this week. A large quantity of equipment now fills the totally remodeled building at 99 Gilmer Avenue.

Hubert Boatwright (right) purchased the property and the lot next to the business. "There's a new roof on it," he said. "We ripped out the guts in it and started fresh."

Boatwright has lived in Tallassee for three years. He has spent another ten years as a resident of Notasulga. The Auburn University graduate got his degree in Engineering. After school he did dozier work and served as a sales representative for Caterpillar traveling across North and South America.

"This business plan has been in the works for five years," Boatwright said. "The business model is nothing new. It's been in every town in America. It's all about customer service."

Tallassee Power & Equipment has sales of all types of mowers including zero-turn models, gas trimmers, chainsaws, pressure washers, generators, and blowers (backpack and hand-held). 4-wheel drive utility vehicles will be arriving soon.

They also provide service on anything they sell, in addition to any brand of small motors. Tallassee Power & Equipment is certified for warranty work on Briggs and Stratton, Kawasaki, Kohler and Honda engines.

"We've got a full product range from residential to commercial," Boatwright noted.

A grand opening and ribbon cutting is set for Saturday, March 27th at 11:00 am. WTLS radio will have a remote broadcast from 10:00 - noon. Free food and refreshments will be available.

A 50th anniversary edition Husqvarna 450 chainsaw will be given away with a free carrying case and a cap (a $369 value). No purchase is necessary. You can register at the store starting March 22nd. You do not have to be present to win.

"We've worked hard for six weeks to get ready," Boatwright said. "It's been enjoyable. I'm real excited."

The secondary beneficiaries include Common Ground Montgomery, an outreach program for children. The carnival will include over 20 rides, vendors, food and live music. Plans are underway to hold a second carnival in the fall.

Antique lovers will enjoy The Warehouse's final March event, a three-day high-end antique show with premiere dealers from all over the southeast scheduled to attend. The antique show will continue the fourth weekend of each month throughout the fall. The show is set for March 26th - 28th, from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11:00 am - 4:00 pm on Sunday.

“The Warehouse” is a newly refurbished, massive “red brick and timber” historic building of Eclectic’s Roaring Twenties era that was used until recent decades as a cotton warehouse and was owned by General Aubrey T. NAACP seeks "justice" in fatal shooting

by Michael Butler

Less than a month after a Tallassee police officer was cleared of criminal action by the Elmore County Grand Jury in the fatal shooting of Michael McIntyre, the Alabama State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the family of the victim are calling for the Department of Justice and FBI to conduct a thorough investigation.

The grand jury determined the officer's actions were "justified and done in the line of duty" and there was "no indictable offense."

The shooting occured on December 29th in the lower housing authority

In a statement from the NAACP, it is noted that a family member felt that District Attorney Randall Houston "was in a rush to acquit the officer before the investigation had even been concluded."

The release also references a prior arrest with police violence. "Only a few years earlier as a teenager, he had been a victim of police brutality from the Tallassee Police Department which resulted in the officer being disciplined for police misconduct and the police department settling a civil lawsuit that was brought against them," the report said.

The family is calling for further investigation, because they state that evidence "showed that the police shot Michael five times in his backside as he was being chased down, and because witnesses observed that Michael did not threaten the police nor brandish the gun which later appeared by the body."

They also feel that the officer's name should not have been withheld.

"We have too many of our young men being killed like animals and nothing is done...now is the time to speak and seek answers and justice," Alabama State Conference NAACP President Benard Simelton said.

The family has retained Oinonen Law Group and Betts and Associates law firms of Atlanta to represent them in a civil rights suit.

Tallassee Mayor George McCain spoke about race relations in the community on WTLS radio this week. "We always want to improve our relations with any minority," he said. "I've got a lot of friends that are African-American. We've got some leaders in this community who are African-American. The family has the prerogative to have an attorney. I hate that this happened. If we could turn back the clock we would."

Times adds new columnist

The Tallassee Times is pleased to welcome local author Jack Solomon and his feature column, "Take My Word." Solomon has written six books and collaborated another seven with his late wife, Olivia.

Solomon earned degrees at Troy State University, Teachers College - Columbia University, and George Peabody College, and completed postgraduate work at Auburn University. During his fifty years in the classroom, he has taught at Kinston High School, Troy State University, Auburn University, Central Alabama Community College, and Oakdale High school.

While a member of the faculty at CACC, Solomon (left) taught courses in the Alabama prison system. Also, while teaching at CACC, his drama group, The Wind Creek Mummers, was named by the Alabama legislature as Alabama’s Folk Theatre.

During his retirement, he has continued to write and publish. He also directs Colonial Press specializing in the encouragement of local writers.

Solomon is a life-long reader and has been a movie buff since childhood. In 1938, at age eleven, he bought a ticket to the first run of "Gone With the Wind," but was denied attendance because of the language and adult content!
