THS girls record historic win

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee High School girls basketball team put up what is believed to be the largest margin of victory in program history. The Tigers beat BTW-Magnet in the home opener at Stumberg Gym on Tuesday, 67-7.

Tallassee improved to 3-1 on the season under first-year head coach Alfonzon Johnson.

"We played sound basketball for the first time this season," said Johnson. "Their team is young and inexperienced."

Tallassee jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first half. BTW-Magnet got on the scorboard at the 3:44 mark of the second period to break the shutout.

"We were really firing on all cylinders. That's really good to see, but at the same time you want to have class and do things the right way. This is my 11th year of coaching and I'm 25. I coached youth football when I was 14. I've lost games in blowouts. When you get up by 25 points in a football game, you call off the dogs. You get up by 30 in a basketball game, you call off the dogs. That's the professional way of doing things. That's what we did.

"If you're in a football game and it's 35-0 in the third quarter, you're like, 'let's not let them score.' In a basketball game, you're like wait."

THS led 41-1 at halftime allowing Johnson to play reserves in the second half.

"In the fourth quarter we played all ninth graders."
