Season ends with blowout loss to Holtville

By Michael Butler

It was Senior Night on Friday at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium with Tallassee ending its season versus Holtville in a 54-18 defeat.

"Holtville's got a good football team," said THS head coach Mike Battles. "We hung in there and fought as hard as we could."

The Tigers got off to a rocky start. Trent Morris was intercepted on the second play of the game leading to an instant score by Holtville. After a three-and-out on the next drive, the Bulldogs blocked a Mason Battles' punt and with a scoop and score and it was 14-0 just over three minutes into the contest.

Tallassee got on the board with a 41-yard run by Trent Morris, but the Tigers could not slow down the Holtville offense. The Bulldogs were only stopped by the clock in the first half as time expired. They had scored on their first four possessions.

Morris led Tallassee on the ground with 90 yards on 18 carries. He was 8-of-14 passing with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jaden McKenzie. Chase Chumley had two catches for 51 yards. Brodie Ellis had three grabs for 49.

Holtville was a step ahead of any potential comeback in the second half. With a 27-18 lead on the first drive of the third quarter, it appeared that Bulldogs running back Daishaun Zeigler was on his way to the endzone, but he dropped the ball on the six-yard line. Tallassee recovered and assembled a 94-yard scoring drive capped by a four-yard run by Christian McCary. It was 27-18, but the Tigers would get no closer.

The Bulldogs (7-3) ended the game on a 27-0 run. The 36-point margin was the largest by Holtville over a Tallassee team in the history of the series.

"That there at the end was on me," Battles added. "I ran some trick plays. If you're losing by 20 or 200 it's still a loss, so you might as well do your best to win."

Tallassee ends its season with a 1-9 record, the worst since 2003 and the lowest win total for Mike Battles in his 27-year career as a coach.

"I'm proud of these seniors. They had every opportunity to hang it up about five or six weeks ago. They could've quit. They could've gone out there and said the heck with it or just not show up anymore. They've kept the attitude good. That's something that'll carry them for the rest of their life. Life's not always rosy. It ain't always going to be fun and go your way. How you respond is going to tell about who and what you are."
