Panthers end THS streak in series

By Michael Butler

It was homecoming in Tallassee with the football game versus region rival Elmore County among the week's festivities. A couple of late scores led the visitors to victory 34-20 breaking a seven-game win streak by Tallassee in the series.

The victory was the first by the Panthers over Tallassee at J.E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium since 2004. It was also Mike Battles first homecoming loss since 2016. Battles is now 10-2 in homecoming games at THS. Macy Crain was crowned homecoming queen.

Former THS Tiger Cade Everson added the final touchdown that put the game out of reach. Everson, who transferred from Tallassee to Elmore County for his senior season, crossed the goal line on an eight-yard scamper in the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to two scores.

Everson and C.J. Wilkes each hit the 100-yard mark in rushing yards. Everson had 101 yards on 15 carries. Wilkes led the Panthers with 161 yards on 16 attempts with three TDs. Wilkes' first touchdown came on the second play of the game - a 65-yard dash to the endzone. It was 13-0 early after a blocked punt led to a two-yard scoring run by Caleb Spivey on the ensuing possession.

Tallassee (1-6/0-3) got on the scoreboard with a seven-yard pass from Trent Morris to Walker Wells in the second quarter. It was 20-6 at the half after another run by Wilkes that hit paydirt from four yards out.

The Tigers took over in the third quarter to pull even at 20-20 with a pair of scores by Joseph Hooks of one yard each, but Elmore County got TDs from Wilkes and Everson in the fourth to grab the win.

The Panthers (5-1/2-1) had the advantage in total yards with 309 (283 rushing) to Tallassee's 214. The Tigers' Trent Morris was 10-of-24 passing for 88 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

"They jumped up on us real quick," said Battles. "Our kids came back and kept playing hard. They're just a very talented team. That's the best Elmore County we've seen in the 12 years I've been here."

Tallassee remains in Class 5A/Region 4 play this week on the road at Valley.

"We've got three games to go," Battles added. "We'll have a chance to win every one of them as long we continue to work. We're better now."

Kickoff will be 7 p.m. (Central) at Rams Field. Airtime will be 6 p.m. on WTLS/Score 94.7/Hit 106.9, Spectrum Channel 340 and Tallassee Times TV on YouTube.
