Tigers pick up first win

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee offense came to life on Friday night at Marbury. The Tigers racked up more points in 48 minutes than it had in the first four games combined winning 50-34 and earning their first victory of the 2023 season.

"They needed some success," said THS head coach Mike Battles. "They've continued to improve each week even though the scoreboard may not show (it) to the common person. We had a great week of practice. You're 0-4 and nobody's a gimme."

The Tigers set the tone on the very first play from scrimmage - a 54-yard touchdown pass from freshman Trent Morris to sophomore Jaden McKenzie. It was one of two TDs for McKenzie on the night. The second came on a 20-yard run, also in the first quarter.

The Tigers totaled 474 yards in offense. Morris, making his second start at quarterback, threw for 164 with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The teams trading scores early, but Tallassee extended its lead late in the first 22-8 with Christian McCary's run of five yards. It was 28-8 early in the second quarter when he took off for a 72-yard scoring jaunt. McCary led the Tigers with 143 yards on 12 rushing attempts and the two TDs.

Joseph Hooks had his second straight game with over 100 rushing yards, finishing with 104 yards on 11 carries and two more scores.

THS seniors; Ben Carwisle (59), Christian McCary (4) and J'Twon Griffin (54)

Marbury's Carsyn Cobb ran it 40 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns.

Tallassee was up 35-16 at the half after Morris' 28-yard scoring strike to Brodie Ellis. Morris connected with Mason Battles on a 57-yard pass to set up the Tigers' first score of the second half - a four-yard run by Hooks. Hooks closed out the scoring with a 10-yard run in the fourth. Battles led Tallassee in receiving yards with 70 yards on three catches.

Student Section

The 50 points was the most scored by a THS team since a 57-20 win over Beauregard during the 2020 season.

"Practices will probably continue to be good because we had a lot of kids do a lot of good things," Battles said. "I'm proud of them."

Tallassee (1-4) is back home on Friday to face Chilton County (2-3). Chilton County won last year's game in Clanton in overtime 24-21.

Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Airtime on WTLS/Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 will be at 6. Audio will be simulcast on Spectrum Cable Channel 340. Video streaming is available on Tallassee Times TV through YouTube.
