Century Ride Saturday

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee Chamber of Commerce is putting on the first “Dam Century Ride” this fall.  It will be on Oct. 15, the weekend prior to the Chamber’s Trade Day. Barry Parker, who has ridden in a "bunch" of rides himself, approached the Chamber about the idea to have one in Tallassee.

"When I came up with the suggestion, I didn't really realize how much work it was on the other end," said Parker. He has also assisted with organizing 5Ks in Tallassee. "It covers a lot of ground."

There will be three rides; a 101.25 mile ride, a 67.29 mile ride and a 28.15 mile ride.

"It’s a huge event," said Michone Roye, director of the Tallassee Chamber of Commerce. "We want to see it go really well because if we can get a couple of good century rides under our belt, we can become part of the Alabama Backroads."

The Alabama Backroads Century Series is a circuit of 100-mile bike rides throughout the state.

The starting point will behind the Chamber of Commerce office downtown with the finish line at the same location. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served afterwards.

The rides will span counties Elmore, Tallapoosa, Montgomery and Macon Counties with several rest stops along the way. The course will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m.

Parker expects the fast riders to complete the "Century Ride" in approximately five hours.

"It's going to be a great day to showcase Tallassee bringing people from out of state and all areas of the state that normally wouldn't come to Tallassee," Parker added. "The rider turn out for the first one won't be quite what I'd like it to be, but it will be a stepping stone for greater things."

For more information, contact Parker at 334-283-2299 or Roye at 334-283-5151. Early registration fee is $35 per ride. Registration begins at 6:30 the day of the ride with an fee of $45. Entry forms are available on the Chamber website.
