Census estimate shows little change

By Michael Butler

The U.S. Census Bureau released its 2020 numbers last year. Now it has estimates for 2021.

The number for Tallassee is up slightly to 4,808 for 2021, an increase from 4,763 the previous year.

The population from the 2010 Census to 2020 fell by 56 residents (about one percent) from 4,819.

Tallassee's population has changed very little since 1960. The highest population on record was 5,112 in 1990. The least during that stretch was the 4,763 count from last year matching the same exact total in 1980.

The city population has varied by no more than 349 citizens during the past 60 years.

Tallassee's population has dropped in each of the last three census counts since the peak of 1990. The biggest population increase in Tallassee history came between the 1940 and 1950 census years when the city population grew from 1,011 to 4,225.

According to the estimates, Huntsville (216,963) remains the largest city. The "Rocket City" surpassed Birmingham in the 2020 Census. The most recent numbers show that Birmingham (197,575) is now third in population behind Montgomery (198,665). Over the past year, Auburn has grown more than any other municipality by 2,135 to 78,564.

Millbrook (17,217) is the largest city in Elmore County followed by Wetumpka (7,190) and Tallassee.
