Light poles on bridge to be replaced

Contributed

The Alabama Department of Transportation has awarded a project to replace all light poles on the Benjamin Fitzpatrick Bridge.

The new poles are being procured.  During this procurement time, ALDOT has identified nine poles to remove immediately.

Beginning Monday, Jan. 11, at approximately 9 a.m. crews will begin removing those nine poles.

The bridge will be reduced to one lane of traffic during removal.  Lane closures will be permitted during non-peak hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It is expected to take two to three days.

The remaining poles will provide lighting on the bridge.  When all new poles have been received, remaining poles will be removed and installation of new poles will begin.  Installation of the new poles is not expected to begin until Spring 2021.

Motorists should use caution when traveling through the work zone.

ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama.
