Wrestlers undefeated after first week

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee wresling season is underway. And so far, so good.

The Tigers won the Jamie Blakely Duals at THS on Nov. 22. Wins came against Stanhope Elmore (58-24), Elmore County (57-24) and Reeltown (63-18). Ethan Jones was voted Most Valuable Wrestler.

Tallassee faced Elmore County again in Eclectic on Monday grabbing another win (54-28) to improve to 4-0.

"We're off to a great start," head coach John Mask said. "We had seven seniors (last year). That experience is valuable. We had a tremendous team."

Last year's team went 29-1 in duals matches winning its first 20 matches before falling in the quarterfinal round of the state duals tournament to Gulf Shores.

This year's team has six seniors; Rutland Phillips, Mason Ledbetter, Troupe Creswell, Caden Griffith, Micah Cole and Corbin Grover.

Through the first four matches, four wrestlers are off to undefeated starts - Phillips, Griffith, Mason Nelson, and Land Bell.

"We've got a good team," Mask added. "I believe we're going to have a tremendous dual team. I believe we're going to have some individuals placing higher than in years past."

On Tuesday, Tallassee will be in Auburn to face Auburn and Benjamin Russell in varsity and junior varsity action beginning at 4:30.
