Wrestling season starts this week

The Tallassee High School wrestling team begins another season on the mats this week. The Tigers host Stanhope Elmore, Elmore County and Reeltown for the Jamie Blakely Duals on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

"The wrestlers are working hard and we are preparing for our first meet," said head coach John Mask, who is kicking off his 23rd year with the program. "We are very excited about all of our wrestlers. We have several newcomers in the lineup."

Tallassee reached the quarterfinals of the Class 5A/6A duals and qualified four wrestlers for the traditional state tournament. The team compiled a phenomenal 29-1 duals record last season.

"After losing five seniors last year we are looking to find their replacements," Mask said. "At this time of the season we are trying to fill every weight class and make sure the young men are in the correct weight class."

State qualifiers Land Bell and Christian McCary return for this season. The restructuring of classifications could be promising for Tallassee. They will now compete exclusively in Class 5A with the AHSAA breaking up the classifications into Class 1A-4A, 5A, 6A and 7A.

Matches start at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at THS. The Tigers are off the remainder of the week for Thanksgiving and then go on the road to Elmore County on Nov. 28 and Auburn on Nov. 29.
