Staff Report

The Tallassee Youth Wrestling Mat Cats took second place at the Alabama Youth Championships in Moody. The team had 10 individual state champions, which accounted for at least one per weight class.

The state champions are; Barker Davis (6U/40), Dylan Price (6U/55), Mason Nelson (8U/50), Devis Bragg (8U/55), Land Bell (8U/65), Walker Wells (8U/70), Bishop Singleton (10U/103), Raymond Coker (10U/135+), Ethan Stevenson (12U/120), Mason Bell (12U/130).

Tallassee's 8U division was first overall. The 6U, 10U and 12U classes were each second.

Parks and Recreation Director Rick Golden is extremely pleased as the youth program continues to flourish. "(It) was an outstanding job by our young wrestlers and coaches," he said. "A big thank you to the parents for (their) support. To the coaches, enough can't be said about (their) hard work and dedication.

"These young boys and girls are better for having been around y'all. Trophies tend to eventually collect dust, but the life lessons will last forever."

Mat Cats coaches are Brent Tennyson, Phillip Nelson, Trey Rogers, Brad Jones, Jeremy Ballentine, Jr. Robinson and Josh Epperson.

Tennyson was named the Dawson Pratt Coach of the Year. "Tallassee Mat Cats had another successful year. We would like to thank the Tallassee Recreation Department and R.J. Stough for their continued support," he said. "Also a big shout out to all the parents. Without the parents we have no team. Also thank you to all the coaches for your time and dedication. Wrestlers thank you for giving it your all when we have asked so much out of you. We are blessed with the greatest group around. If you don't believe me, just ask any other wrestling team that steps on the mat with us."

"The season has come to an end and we look forward to what is next for us as a team. We are always wanting to grow our team and the sport of wrestling. The time to become a champion starts in the off-season. Next year we will be No. 1., training champions, growing wrestling."
