Tigers open with shoutout road win

By Gary Buchanan

Tallassee started the 2016 season with a 25-0 victory at Russell County Friday night.  The win broke a four game losing streak for the Tigers and extended Russell County’s losing streak to 23 games.  The shutout was the first since last year’s opener against Notasulga.

Nick Talley got the scoring started with a 27-yard field goal after Tallassee’s opening drive stalled.  Casey Baynes, making his first start at quarterback, connected with Logan Goodman for a 27-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.  Baynes added a 31-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter.  Jamarcus Miller scored the final touchdown for the Tigers with a 3-yard run.  Talley closed out the scoring with another field goal from 28 yards out.

Coach Battles was pleased with the performance of his new quarterback.  “Casey did what we expected him to,” said Battles.  “The offensive line played really well too.”  Baynes ended the night 7-of-8 passing for 180 yards and one touchdown.  He added another 90 yards and a touchdown on the ground.  His performance earned him the Bright House Network Player of the Game honors.

“We did a lot of good things.  We rotated in a lot of kids.  Some of them played in places they didn’t expect to play.  On the other hand, we did some uncharacteristic things as far as penalties.  We’ll clean that up,” said Battles.
