This past weekend, the Tallassee High School track team competed in the 14-team Class 5A/Sectional 2 held in Smiths Station.

Individuals placing fifth or better in the finals received automatic bids to the state meet to be held in Gulf Shores this weekend.

The Tigers were runners-up scoring 100 total points, just a few behind winner Beauregard.

"It was close, really close," head coach Danny Worley said. "We were leading after the first day, but we knew it was going to be an uphill climb on day two to keep the lead."

Eight Tallassee athletes qualified for state. Kaden Slay was the section champ in all four events he entered (110-meter hurdles, triple jump, high jump, long jump). His 22' 6 1/2" in the long jump broke the THS school record. Irvin Delfin also took first in the 3,200 meters.

"We were in place to possibly win the section because of the effort our team gave during the meet," Worley added. "They exceeded our expectations, and we as coaches are all really proud of them."

Tallassee will depart for Gulf Shores on Wednesday.

"As always, the kids are excited about competing on the state level. Spending a few days at the beach is an added bonus."
