Area tourney this week

By Michael Butler

The Class 5A/Area 5 Tournament is this week in Tallassee. The Tigers are the top seed in the double-elimination bracket.

Tallassee opens play on Wednesday, May 4 at 12 vs. No. 4 seed Pike Road. The No. 2 seed Brewbaker Tech plays No. 3 seed Beauregard at 2.

The Tigers and Brew Tech tied for the top spot in the area, but Tallassee won the tiebreaker in a coin toss. The No. 1 seed gets to host the area tournament.

"It's big for us to host," said head coach Pat Love. "It's the first time we've won a coin flip. The girls are excited to defend our area title on the home field."

Tallassee enters the tournament with a 25-11 record. The Tigers beat Smiths Station 8-3 on Saturday breaking a four-game losing streak - the longest since the 2018 season.

Senior Chloe "Scoot" Davidson has been absent from the lineup with an injury. Love is hoepful to have the Faulkner signee back.

"We won't know what Chloe can do until Wednesday when she goes back to the doctor," Love noted. "This tournament is going to be tough. Every team is good and can win it. It's going to be important for us to start out hot with the bats and play solid defense."
