Girls rout Reeltown

By Michael Butler

Fans were just getting settled in before having to grab the lawn chairs and head back to the exits. Tallassee made quick work of Reeltown in its softball season opener at Southside Park on Thursday.

The Tigers won 20-2 in just 2 1/2 innings. The game lasted approximately 64 minutes.

Although the matchup was abbreviated, the first inning might have seemed like it lasted forever for Rebels fans. After Reeltown's Ashley Flurry hit a homerun in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead, Tallassee launched three more of their own in the bottom half.

Avary Lumpkin, Jenna Manning and Brooke Royster all went deep in an 18-run inning for the Tigers. THS head coach Pat Love believes the 18 in one inning is a THS record.

In all, Tallassee had 16 hits. Chloe Baynes was 4-for-4. Chloe Davison went 3-for-4. Lumpkin added three hits. Belle Haynes had two. Alexis Walls got the win.

The Tigers split four games in the Central Phenix City Tournament over the weekend. The Tigers opened with wins over Eufaula (13-0) and Austin (4-2) but lost to nationally ranked Hewitt-Trussville (13-6) and Rehobeth (3-2).

"I think we are off to a good start," Love said. "The girls have played well and did some great things. (We) still have a long way to go. It’s a long season - just got to get better everyday."

Tallassee (3-2) travels to Millbrook to face Stanhope Elmore on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m.
