Softball shoots for another run at state

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee softball team would like to pick up where it left off in 2021. That team reached the state tournament in Oxford.

Coach Pat Love returns all but two graduates from last year's squad that went 34-13-4. It was Tallassee's first time in the state tournament in the fastpitch era of softball.

The Tigers lost two close games at the tourney, 6-5 to Ardmore and 3-2 to Alexandria in eight innings.

"We were a little starstruck in front of that many fans," Love said. "Being there and in that atmosphere, I think this year they're going to be ready."

Love sits at 149 victories in his first five years as the THS skipper.

Five seniors return in 2022 including two pichers. In all, the Tigers have seven returning starters.

"This team's very talented," said Love. "They're going to be fun to watch. They get after it. They show a lot of energy."

Four players have already signed college scholarships; Chloe Baynes (AUM). Chloe Davidson (Faulkner), Alexis Walls (CACC), Avary Lumpkin (Marion).

"Belle Haynes is going to Alabama," Love added of the all-star, who will focus solely on studies. "She could play where she wanted to if she chose."

All the makings are in place for a team that should compete at a championship level again this season.

"The expecations are to win the area, area tournament, regional and the state."
