Harmony Moyers won two gold medals

Tiger Sharks impress at state

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee Tiger Sharks swim team qualified 48 swimmers for the state championships in Birmingham last week, an unprecedented mark in the program's history.

"That's the most I've ever had," coach Donna Funderburk said of her 26 years with the Tiger Sharks. "We did very well."

Tallassee was 11th overall out of 27 teams at the July 28 meet at the Crossplex. Boaz was the champion.

"That was very good," Funderburk added. "That's swimming with Madison, Auburn, Prattville, those big teams."

Harmony Moyers won championships in the breast and butterfly.

Tallassee Parks and Recreation Director Rick Golden applauded the team for their strong showing.

"They deserve all the accolades they get," he said. "They compete very well and represent the community very well too. We've gotten compliments on how well behaved and mannered our swimmers are. That's just a testimony to the parents and their character."

On Saturday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m., the Tiger Sharks are having an alumni meet with proceeds going towards the pool program.

"It's one lap of each stroke. There will be no diving," Funderburk added. "We will have trophies for each age group, male or female. You can register on Facebook. It's $10 to swim, $2 to watch."

Funderburk, who just retired from the Tallassee City School sytem, is not sure how much longer she'll continue with the swim program.

"My daughter's having a baby in January," she said. "I'm supposed to keep it at least one week out of every month because her husband goes off to work. They've got to figure it out. I would love to (continue), but we'll see."
