Catholic sinks Tigers in rainy opener

By Michael Butler

The 2019 football season is underway, but it didn't go Tallassee's way in a 28-7 loss at Montgomery Catholic on Friday night.

Weather conditions delayed the start of the game by 15 minutes, but the Tigers and Knights played through the rain and distant lightning on a night with many teams in Central Alabama finishing up around midnight.

Catholic turned the tables on Tallassee from a year ago, when the Tigers won by the same score. The game was reminiscent to the one from the previous season with a 14-7 lead for the home team in the third quarter.

That's when the game turned.

Catholic drove 94 yards on the opening drive of the third quarter for a score to extend its lead to two touchdowns and got a three-and-out from its defense to set the tone in the second half. The Knights finished with 28 unanswered in the lopsided win.

Tallassee was held to just 77 yards of total offense. Nine players made their first start on offense for THS.

The Tigers lone TD came early in the second quarter when Marciano Smith muscled his way across the goal line on fourth and one for an early 7-0 lead.

Christian Ivey was good with his arm and feet in throwing for one Catholic score and running for another.

Tallassee freshman Tyler Ellis in his first start went 9-for-12 through the air for 41 yards. Smith led Tallassee on the ground with 45 yards on 16 carries.

"We didn't help ourselves. We made mistakes," said THS coach Mike Battles. " I thought the defense played hard at times. (Catholic) is a good football team. They're going to win a lot of ball games. We're young. We'll learn from it. We'll be better next week."

The purple and gold's next opponent is Handley in Roanoke this Friday, a game won by Tallassee 16-12 last year.

1300 WTLS/106.5 FM will have live coverage of the game beginning at 6. Kickoff is at 7. Coverage is also available on Tallassee Times TV through YouTube, Spectrum Channel 97 and the TuneIn app.
