Tigers punch ticket to playoffs with Holtville win

By Gary Buchanan

Tallassee traveled to Holtville for the first time since 2008 on Friday night. Just like the last visit, the trip ended with a Tallassee victory as the Tigers dominated the Bulldogs 44-28. The win improved the Tigers to 7-1 overall, 4-1 in region play and guaranteed a post-season berth for the tenth straight season.

Markevious Matthews got things started on Tallassee’s first offensive play. The junior running back took the direct snap 64 yards for a touchdown. Quinton Jeter’s extra point put the Tigers up 7-0 and Tallassee never looked back.

Casey Baynes added a couple of touchdowns on the ground. He also connected with Kalvin Levett on an eight-yard touchdown pass. Levett tallied a rushing score of his own, taking a handoff 86 yards to paydirt. Jalen Johnson provided the remaining Tiger touchdown on a five-yard run.

The offense put up 558 yards on the night. That is two weeks in a row with over 500 yards of offense. That type of offensive performance is a credit to the offensive line. The outstanding blocking of the line earned the unit the Spectrum Player of the Game honors.

Despite the lopsided score, Coach Mike Battles was not completely pleased. “We didn’t really play well. We made too many mistakes and had too many penalties. We won, now it’s time to get ready for Leeds.”

The Green Wave will make their first ever trip to Tallassee Friday night. It’s homecoming for the Tigers and a pivotal region matchup. Leeds is ranked No. 4 in the current ASWA poll. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM will broadcast live with an airtime of 6:00. Audio will be simulcast on TuneIn Radio and Spectrum Cable TV Channel 97. Video is available on Tallassee Times TV.
