Tigers fall again in region opener
By Michael Butler
In the brief history of Tallassee versus Clay Central, the winner has won or tied for the region championship four times in five years. On Friday in Lineville, Central of Clay County showed its merit again as a title contender with a dominating 41-7 win. The Volunteers improved to 2-0. Tallassee is now 0-3.
"In years that we've been in the (same) region, we're the only team that's ever beaten them," said Tallassee head coach Mike Battles prior to the contest. "You can look at teams that Danny Horn has coached. They're monotonous. They don't change."
Horn is in his 35th season as a head coach. He is second in the state among active coaches in wins with 343, second only to UMS-Wright's Terry Curtis with 350. Horn has eight state championships to boot.
Battles is 2-4 versus Clay Central since Lineville and Clay County High Schools combined in 2012.
In last week's game at Volunteer Stadium, the Tigers were simply overmatched falling behind 35-0 by halftime.

Tallassee's opening drive showed promise in driving to the Vols 20. Alec Carswell's 37-yard field goal try sailed just outside of the left upright and things went south from there.
LaDamian Boyd scored three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. He added another score in the second quarter. He finished with four TDs on just six carries and 189 yards.
The Tigers were led by Joseph Hooks with 36 yards on nine rushes. Mason Henderson scored his first varsity touchdown on a seven-yard scamper on fourth down in the final frame breaking a seven-quarter scoreless streak.
"They knocked us off the ball pretty good," Battles said. "You've got a really good football team over there with a lot of speed and size. We're running into real good teams. We're young. We're going to keep plugging along. We're going to get this thing turned around."
Next up is Beauregard at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium on Friday. The Hornets (2-1) dropped their region opener last week to Valley 21-14 in overtime. Beauregard won last year's meeting against the Tigers 14-6.
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Airtime on WTLS/Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 is set for 6 p.m. Audio will be simulcast on Spectrum Cable Channel 340. Video streaming is available on Tallassee Times TV through YouTube.
