Everson with the homerun swing

Tigers open with walkoff defeat

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee baseball season is underway. The Tigers faced Montgomery Academy in the Capital City on Monday falling 11-9.

Luke Jones' two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh was the difference.

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 first inning lead, but Tallassee erased the deficit tying it at 7-7 in the fifth.

The Tigers' bats got going with Cade Everson's first swing of the season - a two-run homerun over the fence in leftcenter. It scored Blair McGhar.

Mason Stewart, in relief of starter Jackson Rhodes, threw 3 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs. He struck out three and walked two. Stewart was also 3-for-5 from the plate with an RBI.

The game was a seesaw battle late. After Montgomery Academy went back in front 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth, Tallassee responded in the top of the sixth to even things again. Thomas Lemmond's single scored Chase Chumley and McGhar scored on Cade Everson's sacrifice fly.

Everson was 3-for-3 with five runs driven in. McGhar went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Brue Milner was 2-for-4.

Despite the tough loss, THS head coach John Goodman in his return to the program saw some good things.

"These boys have a lot of fight in them," he said. "When they learn to trust their ability and let it fly, they are going to be fun to watch."

Tallassee opens the home slate with a doubleheader vs. Alabama Christian on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 4:30. WTLS - Score 94.7/Hit 106.9 will have live coverage beginning at 4. Video streaming will be on Facebook Live.
