Baseball meeting this week

New Tallassee head baseball coach John Goodman is holding a parent/player meeting on Wednesday, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the Southside Middle School Gym. Goodman will address expectations for the program.
Student-athletes entering the 7th-12th grades are eligible for middle school, junior varsity and varsity ball. Goodman noted that there will be no tryouts.
"I've never done tryouts," Goodman said after being announced as coach. "What we do in the summer and fall - if a kid can make it through it, I'll give him a spot on the team. We're going to work. Don't think you're going to come out for baseball and not work."
Goodman is putting together an off-season workout schedule.
"We're going to have everybody out there this summer. It's a numbers game. I don't know how many kids are going to buy in. Some of these older kids may say baseball is not for them. That's fine. If you can't do it now, you won't be able to do it when we need you."
Scheduling for next season is still to be determined with new region alignments at the varsity level. Teams in the AHSAA are transitioning from an area format with fewer built-in opponents. The region format is currently in place for football, but there are single games unlike multiple-game series that will be the case for baseball.
"I believe in John Goodman," Tallassee superintendent Dr. Brock Nolin said. "Is he going to be the saving grace? I don't know. I look back on his tenure and I'm excited."
Goodman coached the Tigers baseball program from 1993-2008 winning two state titles.
