Hammonds gets first win as THS coach

By Michael Butler

Kyle Hammonds picked up 218 wins in 13 seasons at Oak Grove. He now has his first victory at Tallassee.

The new varsity baseball skipper got the "W" in dramatic fashion in Calera on Saturday. The Tigers beat Montevallo 4-3 with a walkoff single by senior Clayten Gough in the team's final at-bat.

"It was really good to get our first win on Saturday," Hammonds said. "We did some good things and still have plenty to work on but I'm proud of the guys. "

The Tigers lost the first game to Calera 11-1 in six innings but salvaged the split with the comeback vs. Montevallo.

In the seventh trailing 3-2, Carter Davidson drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Elijah Bridgman's sacrifice bunt moved Davidson to third. Mason Stewart singled in Davidson to knot the score at 3-3. Stewart then scored the game-winner on Gough's base hit.

Stewart led the Tigers with two hits. Jacob Patterson picked up the win on the mound with two scoreless innings of work.

Tallassee (1-1) will host Valley at Southside Field on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 followed by the junior varsity game.
