City Property (10-27-09)

Since when did City Hall or the public library or the Veterans Park become CITY property? At what point did it change from being PUBLIC PROPERTY to CITY PROPERTY? And at what point did the public lose their voice in determining the actions taken on behalf of OUR property? We bought and paid for it , but anymore , it seems that we have no sayso about it ,because it went from being public property to being CITY PROPERTY.That's one sip of kool-aid that I'll pass on.Make your own minds up when election time comes around, till then ,live with your decision from the last time you voted, because the rest of us will have no choice but to - Angry

TYFL (10-27-09)

TYFL Invitation to Prattville this weekend:

For all the readers, families and friends of more than 120 + players ages 6 – 13 in this league. (Give or take a few) Way too many boys to mention in the articles every week but boys that want to play football and make a difference in the games, make the BIG play, practice 3 times a week, play hard and study hard. Players we couldn’t score or defend the other team without. Not to forget the wonderful “volunteer” coaches & scores of parents that put in long hours organizing, managing and “encouraging” these boys & girls. Super-terrific WONDERFUL cheerleaders & their parents, too!!! Come out and support these tigers. See for yourself how hard they ALL play & cheer on the field!!! BIG E for EFFORT!!! “E” for EVERY player makes a contribution. It’s a great feeder program for football seasons yet to come here in Tallassee - Karen Waters

Tigers Win Region (10-27-09)

Congratulations to Tallassee for a great win over Valley. And an extra big congratulations to the team, coaches, and fans for showing class in the post game celebration. Tallassee showed discipline, class and upbringing in the win. Maybe Valley can learn from that positive example - John Sparks

________

Tigers Win Region (10-27-09)

I think the football team, cheer leaders and band should be congratulated on how they conducted themselves on Friday night. After the way Valley behaved last year and after some of the things that happened at Fri. ballgame (ex. their band playing while we had an injured player on the field and their football players celebrating at the same time). I also want to congratulate them for winning the region. It was no doubt a joint effort and it was nice of the football team to thank the band for their support. I also want to say thank you to all the fans that made the trip. It makes you proud to be a part of such great school system and city. Good Luck in the Play Offs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone bring your shakers and your pom poms - Beth Dunn

Paranormal Activity at Library (10-27-09)

We always have fun when we do our paranormal investigations at the library, whether you believe in the paranormal or not. The EVP's from our last investigation were interesting and spooky, considering they were recorded at the library. Thanks for the great article Donna, you always do a wonderful job covering library events! - Sharon J.

SMS Perfect Season (10-20-09)

Just wanted to say thank you to all the parents that have boys on the SMS football team. We had a great year and indeed most of the credit goes to you. Your boys are hard nosed and tough and they have you to thank as it is a reflection of your guidance and how you are raising them. Anytime I needed anything I always had someone that was willing to help. This “team” effort from you guys will only bring the boys and the community closer together and that is always a good thing. Once again thanks for your help in making 2009 the most successful year I’ve had as the SMS football coach - Head Coach Mark Baynes

Haunted Alley (10-20-09)

I hope everyone supports this undertaking and will be appreciative of all the effort and talent put into making it a success. Tallasseeans should want to encourage events tat bring folks to our city. Good Luck - Lil Hayes

Trick or Treat (10-20-09)

So I want to Thank You for keeping Trick or Treat on Halloween Night, how everyone know what night to go out to trick or treat - Donna Thomas

Tallassee vs. Valley (10-20-09)

Tallassee fans should turn out in droves for the Valley game Friday night. It's only a short drive north on 85. Just make sure to take the refreshments you need during the game with you. Don't spend any money at the concession stand or in the town. That way, the only pay they'll get from Tallassee is when the Tigers administer a payback butt whoopin' - Stillred Tiger

________

Tallassee vs. Valley (10-20-09)

I'm from Valley and I follow our high school team and even sit in every now and then when coaches are reviewing game film and all. I'm not sure how you guys beat Beauregard, but it was obviously a fluke because from what I've seen on film of your team, ya'll ain't very good. Some of the coaches have shook their heads and snickered while watching the film of you guys this week, only team they might have hee hawed more about was that Ozark team. Enrique Florence will be sending this week's tape to several colleges after he runs wild on your defense. Defensive linemen with heads down getting abused, linebackers out of place looking lost and when they do come up to make a tackle, it's just an arm tackle. The defensive backs look silly too. I still don't understand why BTW did not throw the ball more and waited until late in the game to do it. No rush, no coverage. And your offense is so one dimensional and laughable too. And if you want to call that an offensive line, I'd call it a matador group, the way they like to jump to the side and dance. This game won't be close, don't bother coming Tallassee fans. And to the guy/gal that wrote about bringing your own refreshments, that's about like a bunch of rednecks. I hope you do it and they take all your Pabst Blue Ribbon and pour it out before they arrest you! I can't wait to hear your excuses this year - Ram Supporter - Tallassee Whiner Hater

________

Tallassee vs. Valley (10-20-09)

Wow that was one heck of a spill, you must have took time to write that on your lunch break from your job @ Krystals. Ram Supporter thats fine, but you guys obviously didnt watch much tape before the Beauregard or Auburn games, last time I checked you guys got OWNED. I mean the only thing good about VALLEY is I-85. So I really wanted to write back and thank you for the Motivation this week, it will do our town proud to beat a bunch of no teeth imbreds. Oh yeah when we WIN dont worry about the cheerleaders or other women we dont want them, Tallassee already has the most beautiful women in the south here besides how would we afford to rent that many tractor trailers to haul them back in. Peace - Jack Tupp

________

Tallassee vs. Valley (10-20-09)

Jacked Up, ha ha, real cute, and if you guys need this for motivation, you really are a sad lot. Be patient, butt whoopin' will be waiting for you necks when you get here. Your team needs way more than motivation, they need a new roster with some kids that can actually make a play - Ram Supporter - Tallassee Whiner Hater

________

Tallassee vs. Valley (10-20-09)

Tallassee and Valley have both outscored opponents by 100 total points for the season. Tallassee has scored 251 total points as compared to Valley's 186. Valley's average score per game is 23.2 to 10.7. Tallassee's is 31.3 to 18.8. Valley has given up only 86 points to Tallassee's 151.

It actually looks, on paper, that Tallassee SHOULD win this game though I picked Valley. If both Teams score their average, we should be fine. For whatever reason, I was thinking Valley's stats were much more impressive than they actually are - Jimmy Bright

________

Tallassee vs. Valley (10-20-09)

Ram, Have you been in a coma since last Thur.? Valley did lose, ok I got that squared away. I see that you have made good use out of your Valley High School education, it gives me good pleasure to see that my tax money has been %!*^#ed away once again. I guess being called a ReDneck is not so bad, better than a THUG. I'm glad you found our tape's funny, you will need a laugh on your way back to that house on wheels after the game. I commend you for the love you have for your football team It's awesome that you can rely on ONE guy (for what your other post said) to "run all over us". You must be a tough guy that can hide behind a computer and and hate on a bunch of teenagers playn their hearts out every week. All I can say is BRING IT ON! GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Jack Tupp

THS Band Still Superior (10-20-09)

I am proud of all the achievements the the majorettes and flags have made this year but I wanted to comment on the band...they have done more than an outstanding job I do not think people realize that Taboo (the opener) is a very hard piece to play but yet they play it so well! Those kids in the band-the playing members- work so hard to put on a good show and I feel like sometimes they get over looked I hope I do not offend any one by saying this but we (the flags and majorettes) could not get out there and look as good as they do with out the band!! So maybe next time you pass a band kid at the ball game tell them what a good job they are doing. Proud supporter of the Pride of Tallassee - Amanda Patterson

Hotel Re-opening (10-20-09)

________

Hotel Re-opening (10-20-09)

My grandfather Jacob Marion Woodall and his brother Dan built the hotel. Jake died a couple of months before the hotel opened. I played in the hotel as a youngster and searched under the couch and chairs cushions for loose change. My wife traveled with her father as a youngster and thet stayed in the hotel when in Tallassee. She played the upstairs piano. I never knew her until we were adults - Robert Woodall

It's Great to be a Tallassee Tiger (10-20-09)

I am proud of our Tallassee Tigers and I believe that they can win Friday night against Valley! Does everyone remember when Valley came to visit Tallassee last year?? - I think it's our time to CELEBRATE on their turf! I hope everyone goes to Valley to support the Tigers and while there YELL YELL YELL as loud as you can for the good guys to bring home a WIN! GO TIGERS!! - Corinne Cochran-Gill

So glad that the 158th is returning home Sunday! We, as well as all of the families, are very ecstatic and are anticipating the return of all of the soldiers. Tigers Get Region Win Over Hornets (10-13-09)

This will be a huge week for Tallassee Football playing Valley. Our great town has an opportunity to win a Region Championship and the Tigers need everyones support. We have had fear turnout at the games this year, but we need to have the 12th man at Valley to help bring the Tigers a victory. There shouldn't be anyone left in Tallassee Friday night. I am hoping that the school will have spirit buses going to Valley and at a price that will allow every student to be there. We need to get behind this strong program the same way we did in the mid 80\'s. We all remember the "I Believe" signs and every business owner writing on their windows. This town hasn't hosted a play-off game in Football in 5 years and with a victory Friday night it will be assured one. Go Tigers!! - John S.

Paul Taylor's Comments (10-13-09)

Railroad Crossing on 229 at Milstead (10-13-09)

What is it going to take to get the RR Crossing down by the Interstate fixed? Who do I need to send my bill to for getting my truck realigned? Why can't they fix it like the one in Loachapoka going to that Gravel Pit? That one is perfect - Ryan Merrett

Trade Day (10-13-09)

Move this event to the City Hall Complex. You have the library, city hall, mini park to host this event. Restrooms indoor facilities for the elderly and plenty of parking. Get with the East Tallassee Methodist Church and use the parking lot. Just would be a better event - DirtBag

________

Trade Day (10-13-09)

Trade Days was a very enjoyable time and a great success. It was great to see so many Tallassee friends and neighbors out to support the town and the Chamber of Commerce. Our church raised enough money with baked goods to fund 20 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. So a very big thanks to all who came by and supported this effort and a very big thanks to the Tallassee Times for all the good reporting and coverage! Once again a great job! - John Sparks, Pastor
River Road Baptist Church

Stadium Expansion Still Planned (10-13-09)

Did they mention anything about fixing the bathrooms on the home side THIS year? They are absolutely disgusting - Gas Mask Granny

________

Stadium Expansion Still Planned (10-13-09)

The greatest thing Tallassee could do for sports and the school system is the following:
1. Make Tallassee a Elmore County School System. Elminate the current Board and let the EBOE run our school system.
2. Starting in 2012 make all students living on the Tallapoosa side of the river who are not starting the 9th grade attednd Tallapoosa County Schools.
3. Forget the stadium expansion and just up-grade what needed, restrooms, concessions stands.
4. Tallassee will probally go back to a 4 or 3 A school which will help it compete at a more appropriate level - Redneck

________

Stadium Expansion Still Planned (10-13-09)

Hey redneck, Tallassee consists of east and west tallassee. Do you think we should be kicked out of the city limits. Do you think we should be without representation on the 'east' side? Do you not think we have contributed anything to this town and it's development and culture. Are you too cultured and educated to associate with the east side of town? What have you contributed to this town in your lifetime that you can brag about? Please explain where you get off thinking your idea of dividing a community to get back to a 3-4A school is a such a great thing. Did you even play football? If you did, were you ever on the field? I doubt it. Tallassee football would not be competetive without the Tallapoosa contribution. The best football player to come out of Tallassee in the last 30+ years grew up in Carrville.

And one more thing redneck, don't call yourself 'redneck'. Honorable rednecks would never associate with someone as ignorant as you - Rhett Dennis

________

Stadium Expansion Still Planned (10-13-09)

Rhett, you stole my thunder - Bobby Dennis

________

Stadium Expansion Still Planned (10-13-09)

Hey redneck, I think the plans do include new restrooms and concessions? The medal bleachers the visitors currently sit on or almost 30 years old! Do I believe the plans could be scaled down a little of course but the fans of Tallassee deserve a nice home side and not having to face the sun on those hot August Fridays will be a welcome bonus for all Tiger fans. No one will have to stand unless they want to it will be plenty of seats for everyone.

As for the going Elmore County system that would be crazy. We would always be the other county school in West Elmore. Do not forget that less than two years ago Millbrook had thoughts of forming there own system!!! The grass is not always greener!! Have a great day - Long-time Fan

________

Stadium Expansion Still Planned (10-13-09)

Hey Redneck! If you would like to be in a Elmore County School district and you don't like, "the Tallassee way of doing things" then move! There is a lot of tradition here and we all love our town. Don't complain about things that the majority of the town like and don't want to change. Too often a small group of people make changes that the rest of the town ask how did that happen. There is a lot of new people in Tallassee now and we welcome all, but know that some things aren't broken and don't need energy spent on them. Our system isn't perfect, but we have people that we trust and respect trying to do the best for our chidren! - John S.

________

Stadium Expansion Still Planned (10-13-09)

I agree with Rhett Dennis and John S. I for one like going to Tallassee and do not want to go to Reeltown or any other Tallapoosa school. The whole stadium will be re-built too, where they players will come out of the field house straight onto the feild under the home bleachers. We probably won't drop down to 4A and definitely not 3A, but we can handle the 5A guys anyways. Everyone that it really effects wants a nicer staduim and we already love the new feild house. Tallassee needs to grow - Tom Mot

Code Meeting (10-6-09)

I attended the code discussion last week as a private citizen, who may find himself within the Tallassee police jurisdiction at some time in the future. I have known Mayor McCain for quite a long time and he had asked in advance if I would be willing to answer questions regarding the International Building Code since I have worked with building codes and standards for 35 years as a practicing architect and am now employed by the Alabama State Building Commission as a regulating architect. This agency enforces the International Building Code over a specific jurisdiction.

To be clear, I in no way represented the State of Alabama, or the Alabama State Building Commission in the meeting last week. The State Building Commission does not have jurisdiction, generally speaking, in what was discussed by the citizens of Tallassee at that meeting - Robert O’Reilly, Architect

Mission Friends (10-6-09)

I really did enjoy the article on Mission Friends and it gives me an idea for our Church to do - Cathy Darnell

Superior Pride (10-6-09)

The Pride Of Tallassee did a Superior job at the band competition in Troy, Alabama last Saturday and the ratings they recieved are proof !! Opinions (10-6-09)

I've enjoyed reading your opinion section of the Tallassee Times for awhile now. Several topics have raised my interest, not known for holding my tongue, I would like to address some of these topics.

First, I was not present at the TYFL junior game last weekend have no idea how big or aggressive the Holtville team was. I do however applaud the coaches for making a decision they believed was in the best interest of the safety of the children. I myself coach youth in multiple sports and I have seen first hand grown men trying to relive or compensate for their youth experiences at the expense of our children. These "coaches" develop tunnel vision and forget they are dealing with mentally and physically underdeveloped adolescents. Our kids are to important for us to allow someone to force a "win at all cost" mentality upon them. there is a time to retreat to fight another day.

In dealing with the International Building Codes as it pertains to Tallassee. I work in construction and am very familiar with the
plumbing code. The State of Alabama adopted the International Codes Sections after the Southern Codes became obsolete. It is my belief that if a municipality does not have an ordinance related to the life safety issues within its jurisdiction, the States statutes covers as an umbrella. It is also my belief that a municipality can adopt regulatory codes governing its jurisdiction but, they must be equal to or greater than those adopted by the State. Please correct me if I am wrong.

As a transplant t Tallassee, I have come to love this town and its people. I do however see homes and former businesses in such disrepair, they should have been torn down long ago. the property value alone is worth more without the structures and would have more curb appeal for future investors. Expansion; some want it some don't. Do I want Tallassee;s growth to spiral out of control like Auburn, Prattville, and East Montgomery? No. But I do want a steady, consistent growth that would create a better quality of life for my children and neighbors. " If you build it they will come." We need t be ready for that contingency. The annex of Hwy 229 to the Interstate should be a priority for our city leaders and all those that wish to be incorporated into the city limits need to be allowed to do so. yes, some will balk at the idea, but once Tallassee's population exceeds 10,000, government grants and loans will become many times more accessible. Allowing the city increase services and recruit corporations to locate here. The increase in the tax base wouldn't hurt either.

Now for my final rant. I can not for the life of me understand why Tallassee feels the need for a multi million dollar Recreation Center. Just because Community Hospital will donate land for the project doesn't mean its in the best interest of the city. has anybody seen this plot of land? It would take at least two million dollars just to get the property suited for construction of this elaborate building. that;s if ADEM allows the redirection of the natural drainage. Don't get me wrong, we desperately need a new facility. Ive seen the proposed drawings and it has something for everyone, from a bowling ally to a swimming pool, it has it all...for a price. I think the city leaders may want to rethink this whole idea and try to live within our means.

The city owns 85 acres along 229 that is flat and pretty much ready for construction. Yes, its in flood plain, but so is over half of the city limits. Using this location and designing a facility that allows for expansion can save the city at least 4 million dollars initially. I know not all will agree with me but, I had some spare time and something on my mind. Thank you for listening.

Jerry Beasley
