I take from your article a question
of either/or concerning the game and
of course we know from your words
you think it was a choke. Let me give
you something else to think about.
If Greg McElroy doesn't have a record
setting partial 1st half(which he
did) it is not even close. The play
of Bama was uncharacteristic at the
beginning based on their performance
this year and the Aubs performance
was a miracle but was consistent to
this year's performance. But whichever

I
well I remember walking to school
in Tallassee. I lived on S. Dubois
Avenue and walked every day sometimes
having to go back home and carry my
cat since he wanted to go to school
too. I also crossed the street and
went to Mt. Vernon theater by myself.
Of course now this was in 1945-1947
which tells you how old I am! My dad
worked at the drugstore as a druggist
then and I would even walk to the
drugstore sometimes in the middle
of the night with him when he had
to fill a prescription. Ah, the good
old days. I still live close to the

don't walk to school anymore. Good

Downtown
development (11-23-10)
It
is great to finally see some progress
in downtown. What disturbs me is the
lack of interest in preserving the
historical side of it. Look around
and the buildings are using plain
windows. I know that there is a cost
involved but I thought the whole issue
was to make it look like it did before.
I am very disappointed in what is
happening. If that is the look we
are going for ,just tear all of the
old buildings down and put back more
commercial type. Would this not effect
us getting grants for revitalization?
Just hate to see us become a "town
of the past" gone modern.
__________
Downtown
development (11-23-10)
Yes,
it is true when on views the downtown
there are modern windows versus the
older types. It doesn't harm your
efforts when it comes to getting redevelopment
grant. When Tallassee doesn't have
a) An Architecture review board b)
a set of ordnances that are particular
to the downtown designated historical
district or c) no known rules and
regulations for the Historical part
of Tallassee in general. The current
hiistorical district is merely a designation
for Oficials to put on a grant that
they got one. A great deal of the
building issues could be resolved
with an architecture review board
however it has been seen in quite
a few civic meeting where this is
NOT something that those in a select
group want both civic officials and
not. Since Tallassee has neither...
things are allowed to happen. Since
there is not a ordnance on buildings
in the zoned district its the discretion
of the owner. The same thing goes
for Trees in Downtown seems only one
of the massive oaks is left in downtown
proper..... in the places new buildings
go instead of rushed logging jobs
in late night hours to rid a sight
of a heritage sized tree.
Tallassee needs to embrace its historic
buildings. Some owners have refurbished
windows back such as the Company Store.
Some groups are restoring the buildings
they are in charge of as most have
be able to re-enjoy the MT Vernon
theatre as it starts its journey to
get reopened. And some groups of owners
are bringing back buildings into service
that were deemed far gone the Hotel
is a prime example. One thing is for
sure until we have an architecture
review board that has some teeth and
a set of DEFINED RULES AND REGULATIONS
for the historical downtown/ Tallassee-Carrville
Corridor we will continue to lose
what makes Tallassee.
A city of Metal Manufactured buildings
is nothing more than an industrial
park. No matter how they are masked/skinned
they still are a temporary building
that says cheap visually as well as
the space within is disposable. Tallassee
is a great deal better than that and
its citizens know that. Right now
Tallassee has two views one on 229/`14
which is Anywhere USA and the other
is Hwy 14 from the 229 intersection
to the city limits out 14. Tallasssee
and various interested parties will
need to be careful in the rush to
"modernize" less the 229/14
Tallassee starts to look like the
southern and western boulevard of
Montgomery. Solid thought into the
materials in how they age and the
look of the new buildngs is as much
the face of Tallassee as its city
limit signs and the City Leaders.
Slap it up quick metal buildings belong
in an industrial park, big box stores
need to conform to the local design
of the town and not anywhere USA,
and a serious appreciation for what
is here for building reuse needs to
begin instead of grand love for a
5 story metal building of a stadium
crowned with a trailer - CHRISTOPHER

It
would have been great if the Hotel

__________
Downtown
development (11-23-10)
I'm
not sure if the anonymous comments
about windows in buildings in downtown
Tallassee are about the new windows
being installed in Hotel Talisi, the
ones that were installed this past
year in the Jace Morton Salon, or
the ones in the old Plant Drug building.
If the person commenting is talking
about Hotel Talisi windows, the new
windows have to be up to code. The
windows that were in the Hotel when
it burned were no longer usable, and
although I'm sure the owners would
try their best to find some windows
that are historically accurate for
the 1928-29 time period the Hotel
Talisi was built, if the windows have
to be up to code the could not be
used. Since the Hotel was severely
damaged, it is considered new construction
and is no longer grandfathered in.
That means safe, energy efficient
windows, fire escapes, and an elevator
once the 2nd and 3rd floors are put
into use. According to Wylie Troupe,
one of the owners, the current plans
are to keep the 3rd floor an open
room for meetings, receptions, proms,
and other events. It's about 11,000
square feet of space and we could
sure use that! So the windows may
not be historic but it sure looks
good to see some windows at all!
Because the Hotel Talisi is a for-profit
business, grants are limited. Grants
are available to non-profit groups
such as the Tallassee Historical Preservation
Society and the newly formed Tallassee
Redevelopment Authority. Hopefully
the cobblestone streets and the underground
wires we have talked about for years
will one day come to fruition. Tallassee
never had cobblestone streets; to
be historically accurate we would
probably need unpaved dirt streets
but that would never work!
Like the rest of the world, Tallassee
is certainly not perfect. But I'll
take the junkyards of Tallassee over
the Taj Mahal any day - Suzannah

GE
plant coming to Auburn - (11-16-10)
AUBURN -- GE Aviation has selected
Auburn as the site for a new environmental
coatings facility for advanced military
jet engine components, Governor Bob
Riley announced on Tuesday.
GE Aviation selected
Auburn based on the area's access
to a strong technical workforce, local
government support and employee training
opportunities, and close proximity
to Auburn University.
At a ceremony last
August at the Alabama State Capitol
with Governor Riley and GE Aviation
President and CEO David Joyce, GE
Aviation announced its intention to
open a new coatings facility in Alabama.
"The high-tech
jobs that are coming to Alabama because
of GE Aviation will have a significant
impact. Alabama continues to be a
prime location for jobs in aviation
and aerospace because prestigious
international companies like GE recognize
we have a talented and skilled workforce,
outstanding workforce training programs,
and communities that partner with
companies to help them be successful,"
said Governor Riley.
Auburn Mayor Bill
Ham said, "It's a proud day for
Auburn. In the last few years, regardless
of national economic conditions, Auburn
has received recognition as a great
place to live, work and do business.
We've seen local industry expand and
new industry join our community. An
announcement like this can't be made
without thanks to Governor Riley and
Representative Hubbard, thanks to
Dr. Gogue and Auburn University for
what they bring to the community,
and thanks to Auburn's Economic Development
team for their tireless work to keep
Auburn's economy strong."
Representative Mike
Hubbard of Auburn said, "This
is a great win for citizens of Auburn,
Lee County and the state of Alabama.
GE Aviation's decision to locate in
Auburn brings more jobs to the East
Alabama area, as we continue to outperform
a sluggish national economy. This
location is a testament to the strength
of Alabama and to the quality of the
greater Auburn community."
"This is exciting
news for our state and I am thrilled
to see GE Aviation make the Third
District its home," said Congressman
Mike Rogers (R). "These will
be good paying jobs for East Alabama,
and I plan to work closely with them
to help support their efforts to provide
for our men and women in uniform."
GE Aviation, a GE
operating unit based in Cincinnati,
Ohio, is a world-leading supplier
of commercial and military engines
and components as well as integrated
digital, electric power, and mechanical
systems for aircraft.
Construction of the
new 200,000 square-foot facility will
begin in 2011 at Auburn Technology
Park West, and is expected to open
in the 2012 timeframe.
The facility will
enhance components for the GE/Rolls-Royce
F136 jet engine for the Joint Strike
Fighter (JSF) F-35 program. Initial
F136 production will start in 2013.
GE
is expected to employ 300 to 400 people
when the engine ramps up to full rate
production later this decade.

Veterans
Day (11-9-10)
Little history about veterans day.
An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code,
Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made
the 11th of November in each year
a legal holiday—a day to be
dedicated to the cause of world peace
and to be thereafter celebrated and
known as "Armistice Day."
Armistice Day was primarily a day
set aside to honor veterans of World
War I, but in 1954, after World War
II had required the greatest mobilization
of soldiers, sailors, Marines and
airmen in the Nation’s history;
after American forces had fought aggression
in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the
urging of the veterans service organizations,
amended the Act of 1938 by striking
out the word "Armistice"
and inserting in its place the word
"Veterans." With the approval
of this legislation (Public Law 380)
on June 1, 1954, November 11th became
a day to honor American veterans of
all wars.
I was born an raised in Tallassee
and I am still serving on active duty
in the US Army. I spent 6 years stationed
at Ft Lewis,WA where I served 3 tours
to Iraq, I am currently stationed
at Ft Carson,CO preparing for my 4th
tour of duty. I lost 3 great friends
2 of them were KIA on Veterans Day
in 2005 so Veterans Day is a day for
me that I will never forget. The feeling
of knowing that we are supported by
family,friends,loved ones, and people
that we have never met before is means
a lot to us VETS. November 11 is a
day to honor Veterans not dishonor
them. So I ask of you if you know
a veteran that has served or is still
serving to thank them if its just
a phone call, a card, or a simple
hand shake just to say Thank You.
You might think those 3 little things
doesn't mean much but to a Veteran
it means the world. I myself would
like to say Thank You to all my brothers
and sisters that served or is still
serving..... Concerned Soldier

This
is concerning inmates getting a education
in Alabama. Inmates are given the
opportunity to get their High school
diploma or GED and then from there
can go on to college and get a college
education at tax payers expense. They
have been given this opportunity since
1965/1966 with the opening of JF Ingram
State Technical College. They have
the opportunity to choose from a variety
of trades and skills. When they complete
a skill or trade they are awarded
a college diploma or certificate.
There is also assistance provided
to inmates upon making parole or reaching
their end of sentence such as: helping
find them a place to live, help finding
a job. The Department of Corrections
also works with other two year colleges
across the state of Alabama to help
inmates get their GED no matter what

in their victory. I saw a Tallassee
Tiger football team where most of
the players stayed on the field the
entire game (unlike the other team)
- during offense and defense - and
never gave up and showed more class
and heart and the absolute will to
fight for what they wanted to achieve.
They continued to fight, through being
kicked and pushed after the whistle
was blown, through being tossed around
and knocked down by someone that outweighed
them by 100 lbs or more, and still
got back up and tried it again. Say
what you want to say, Mr. Butler,
but what we witnessed Friday night
was good sportsmanship that was one-sided,
and by a group of boys who definitely,
without a doubt, bleed purple and
gold. The Spanish Fort team deserved
to be called out Friday night during
the game and after for their actions
- it just was not necessary. Hold
your head up Tallassee Tigers, you've
faced giants all year and fought hard.
Your season was a tremendous success
and you all should be proud of yourselves
- I know we are proud of you - It's
great to be a Tallassee Tiger
Reeltown
Round Two (11-2-10)
I
would hope that all of Tallassee would
come out and support this team, including
coaches,players,administration from
Tallassee High School and BOE. I also
hope that the Mayor and all city councilman
would attend. Reeltown folks spend
money in Tallassee shopping and they
work in almost all the business community.
Our team has lost but this city can
provide support to this community
and the people who support our community
with shopping dollars and a solid
work force. Go Reeltown Rebels.

Veterans
Parade (11-2-10)
As
a concered citizen of Tallassee and
a student of the Tallassee High School
I find it to be pretty sad that hardly
anyone comes out to honor the people
who fought in the war and are now
veterans...BUT we can have a homecoming
parade or a christmas parade and the
streets are filled with people but
there are probably fifty people on
the streets.
__________
Veterans
Parade (11-2-10)
I'll
agree, the parade was a bust. Half
of us didn't get to see it because
we were closer to the stadium. Someone
decided to end it at CVS so many of
the band members just walked down
the sidewalk to the stadium. However,
your comparison to the other parades
is apples to oranges. Consider the
participants in the parades, there
are numerous dance groups, youth leagues,
etc. that participate in the Christmas
parade so there are lots of parents
and grandparents watching. Homecoming
is homecoming, people will come out
for that. Who participated in the
Veteran's Day parade? The band, a
bunch of motorcycles, then what? The
blame for that falls on the organizers

Paving
to start (11-2-10)
I
am glad to see that the State is addressing
the issue on Hwy 14 and 229. However,
we do have a road that is traveled
each day that needs to be addressed
as well. I do understand that this
road will not be a state job, but
a city one. The road of concern is
Comer Lane, which is one of the routes
that has to be taken every morning
and afternoon to get students to Southside
Middle School. It is a narrow road
and there really is no room for widing,
but it needs to be resurfaced very
bad. The Pot Holes are very bad and
are only getting bigger - Starr
__________
Paving
to start (11-2-10)
I
agree with the other comment about
Comer Lane. That road is a death trap.
I have complained to the city about
that road for years, t0 2 different
mayors. Someone is going to have to
be seriously hurt or killed before
something is done about it. Every
time it rains, trees fall across the
road. I am on pins and needles everytime
I have to go to Southside. On several
occasions, I have almost been run
off the road by people coming up the
hill in the middle of the road in
order to avoid the pot holes. Going
through the other way by the power
company is not much better either
because the vines running across the
street are liable to choke you to
death. It is truly an eye sore for
a city that is trying to stimulate
its economy and bring in businesses.
One trip down EB Payne Drive is enough
to run anybody out of town. Shame
on you Tallassee for allowing this
mandatory school route to exist in
this condition. We fuss about everything
else, why not about the safety of
our streets - Concerned Parent
__________

I often take people down to the river
for photos and we turn onto E.B. Payne
Drive and follow it to the river.
There needs to be a stop sign because
I often meet people coming from the
opposite direction and when I am on
E.B. Payne with the old mill to my
left I sometimes meet people and no
one knows who is supposed to stop.
I also saw two kids about 14 years
old on the old bridge that is not
supposed to be used. I believe in
historic preservation but if there
are no funds to fix the bridge for
pedestrians then perhaps we need to
destroy it. (I think city lines run
under it so we really can't destroy
it, I guess). It is an attractive
nuisance - Suzy Solmon Wilson

does this mean that all seats are

Fort. These are OUR kids, our kids
going out on that field playing their

We were not able to travel last Friday
night but felt like we were right
there watching. I enjoyed the fact

you gave details, etc. and even the
band show it was great to see it all!
