Christmas Parade (11-30-10)

Thank you so much for showing as much of the parade as you could. There were some really rude people that got right in front of the camera. I love you guys for showing it though. A sugestion Up in the back of a truck or flat bed truck to get above the RUDE people. It really was A great Parade Thank you again - Gloria Griggs

Auburn/South Carolina (11-30-10)

South Carolina can't knock the tigers out of the BCS title game. The othe teams can't make up the points in the BCS system to overtake them.

Auburn/South Carolina (11-30-10)

Michael....Michael....Michael.... I take from your article a question of either/or concerning the game and of course we know from your words you think it was a choke. Let me give you something else to think about. If Greg McElroy doesn't have a record setting partial 1st half(which he did) it is not even close. The play of Bama was uncharacteristic at the beginning based on their performance this year and the Aubs performance was a miracle but was consistent to this year's performance. But whichever side you are on we both can agree we witnessed one of the greatest Iron Bowl and IMHO the greatest college football player to ever play the game....Cam Newton....Thanks for the opportunity to respond - Steve Stokes...WCE!!!!!

MWING SWING SWING from them! The younger generation knows what this means!Cameron-the best college player ever WHAT?If he wins out this year and makes it a few years in the NFL then i'll call him CAM.He'll probably mirror Jamarcus Russell.Newton couldn't tote Tebow's jockstrap!
If Auburn wins I hope the rest of the team gets a little recognition.Maybe Gene will put a leash on "THE GREATEST" and not let him display his classless, ghetto fabulous disposition as he has all year.I'll be rooting for the SEC to bring it all home.Lets just hope Auburn shows a little class and as the saying goes "act like you've been there and done it".But then again you haven't! - Go Gators

Board Block (11-23-10)

Congratulations Mr Danny Ingram on your new leadership role as president! We are so proud of you for your service and the stance you continue to take on our school system! This change was waay past due and hopefully now the people of Tallassee will join in and support him and the entire board. Thank you to the other board members for having the confidence and trust in his vision and leadership and for selecting him as your new president. Mr. Ingram is a man of charcter and integrity and will do what is right and in the best interests of both the teachers and students - Concerned Tallassee Parent

Sugar Shack (11-23-10)

I well I remember walking to school in Tallassee. I lived on S. Dubois Avenue and walked every day sometimes having to go back home and carry my cat since he wanted to go to school too. I also crossed the street and went to Mt. Vernon theater by myself. Of course now this was in 1945-1947 which tells you how old I am! My dad worked at the drugstore as a druggist then and I would even walk to the drugstore sometimes in the middle of the night with him when he had to fill a prescription. Ah, the good old days. I still live close to the school, but my children and grandchildren don't walk to school anymore. Good article - Dorothy (McCartney) Baughman

Downtown development (11-23-10)

It is great to finally see some progress in downtown. What disturbs me is the lack of interest in preserving the historical side of it. Look around and the buildings are using plain windows. I know that there is a cost involved but I thought the whole issue was to make it look like it did before. I am very disappointed in what is happening. If that is the look we are going for ,just tear all of the old buildings down and put back more commercial type. Would this not effect us getting grants for revitalization? Just hate to see us become a "town of the past" gone modern.

__________

Downtown development (11-23-10)

Yes, it is true when on views the downtown there are modern windows versus the older types. It doesn't harm your efforts when it comes to getting redevelopment grant. When Tallassee doesn't have a) An Architecture review board b) a set of ordnances that are particular to the downtown designated historical district or c) no known rules and regulations for the Historical part of Tallassee in general. The current hiistorical district is merely a designation for Oficials to put on a grant that they got one. A great deal of the building issues could be resolved with an architecture review board however it has been seen in quite a few civic meeting where this is NOT something that those in a select group want both civic officials and not. Since Tallassee has neither... things are allowed to happen. Since there is not a ordnance on buildings in the zoned district its the discretion of the owner. The same thing goes for Trees in Downtown seems only one of the massive oaks is left in downtown proper..... in the places new buildings go instead of rushed logging jobs in late night hours to rid a sight of a heritage sized tree.

Tallassee needs to embrace its historic buildings. Some owners have refurbished windows back such as the Company Store. Some groups are restoring the buildings they are in charge of as most have be able to re-enjoy the MT Vernon theatre as it starts its journey to get reopened. And some groups of owners are bringing back buildings into service that were deemed far gone the Hotel is a prime example. One thing is for sure until we have an architecture review board that has some teeth and a set of DEFINED RULES AND REGULATIONS for the historical downtown/ Tallassee-Carrville Corridor we will continue to lose what makes Tallassee.

A city of Metal Manufactured buildings is nothing more than an industrial park. No matter how they are masked/skinned they still are a temporary building that says cheap visually as well as the space within is disposable. Tallassee is a great deal better than that and its citizens know that. Right now Tallassee has two views one on 229/`14 which is Anywhere USA and the other is Hwy 14 from the 229 intersection to the city limits out 14. Tallasssee and various interested parties will need to be careful in the rush to "modernize" less the 229/14 Tallassee starts to look like the southern and western boulevard of Montgomery. Solid thought into the materials in how they age and the look of the new buildngs is as much the face of Tallassee as its city limit signs and the City Leaders. Slap it up quick metal buildings belong in an industrial park, big box stores need to conform to the local design of the town and not anywhere USA, and a serious appreciation for what is here for building reuse needs to begin instead of grand love for a 5 story metal building of a stadium crowned with a trailer - CHRISTOPHER HUMPHRIES

__________

Downtown development (11-23-10)

Hotel Talsi. Looking forward to the opening !!!

__________

Downtown development (11-23-10)

It would have been great if the Hotel was being restored in a way as to be historically correct , but I think we need to count our Blessings that it is being restored at all . The Hotel doesn't seem to be a big money maker and the owners are taking a risk by investing any money in it . I am real happy to see all the new development in the downtown area . Maybe there is hope for this town , after all ! - Glenn Dean

__________

Downtown development (11-23-10)

I'm not sure if the anonymous comments about windows in buildings in downtown Tallassee are about the new windows being installed in Hotel Talisi, the ones that were installed this past year in the Jace Morton Salon, or the ones in the old Plant Drug building. If the person commenting is talking about Hotel Talisi windows, the new windows have to be up to code. The windows that were in the Hotel when it burned were no longer usable, and although I'm sure the owners would try their best to find some windows that are historically accurate for the 1928-29 time period the Hotel Talisi was built, if the windows have to be up to code the could not be used. Since the Hotel was severely damaged, it is considered new construction and is no longer grandfathered in. That means safe, energy efficient windows, fire escapes, and an elevator once the 2nd and 3rd floors are put into use. According to Wylie Troupe, one of the owners, the current plans are to keep the 3rd floor an open room for meetings, receptions, proms, and other events. It's about 11,000 square feet of space and we could sure use that! So the windows may not be historic but it sure looks good to see some windows at all!
Because the Hotel Talisi is a for-profit business, grants are limited. Grants are available to non-profit groups such as the Tallassee Historical Preservation Society and the newly formed Tallassee Redevelopment Authority. Hopefully the cobblestone streets and the underground wires we have talked about for years will one day come to fruition. Tallassee never had cobblestone streets; to be historically accurate we would probably need unpaved dirt streets but that would never work!
Like the rest of the world, Tallassee is certainly not perfect. But I'll take the junkyards of Tallassee over the Taj Mahal any day - Suzannah Solomon Wilson

GE plant coming to Auburn - (11-16-10)

AUBURN -- GE Aviation has selected Auburn as the site for a new environmental coatings facility for advanced military jet engine components, Governor Bob Riley announced on Tuesday.

GE Aviation selected Auburn based on the area's access to a strong technical workforce, local government support and employee training opportunities, and close proximity to Auburn University.

At a ceremony last August at the Alabama State Capitol with Governor Riley and GE Aviation President and CEO David Joyce, GE Aviation announced its intention to open a new coatings facility in Alabama.

"The high-tech jobs that are coming to Alabama because of GE Aviation will have a significant impact. Alabama continues to be a prime location for jobs in aviation and aerospace because prestigious international companies like GE recognize we have a talented and skilled workforce, outstanding workforce training programs, and communities that partner with companies to help them be successful," said Governor Riley.

Auburn Mayor Bill Ham said, "It's a proud day for Auburn. In the last few years, regardless of national economic conditions, Auburn has received recognition as a great place to live, work and do business. We've seen local industry expand and new industry join our community. An announcement like this can't be made without thanks to Governor Riley and Representative Hubbard, thanks to Dr. Gogue and Auburn University for what they bring to the community, and thanks to Auburn's Economic Development team for their tireless work to keep Auburn's economy strong."

Representative Mike Hubbard of Auburn said, "This is a great win for citizens of Auburn, Lee County and the state of Alabama. GE Aviation's decision to locate in Auburn brings more jobs to the East Alabama area, as we continue to outperform a sluggish national economy. This location is a testament to the strength of Alabama and to the quality of the greater Auburn community."

"This is exciting news for our state and I am thrilled to see GE Aviation make the Third District its home," said Congressman Mike Rogers (R). "These will be good paying jobs for East Alabama, and I plan to work closely with them to help support their efforts to provide for our men and women in uniform."

GE Aviation, a GE operating unit based in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a world-leading supplier of commercial and military engines and components as well as integrated digital, electric power, and mechanical systems for aircraft.

Construction of the new 200,000 square-foot facility will begin in 2011 at Auburn Technology Park West, and is expected to open in the 2012 timeframe.

The facility will enhance components for the GE/Rolls-Royce F136 jet engine for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) F-35 program. Initial F136 production will start in 2013.

GE is expected to employ 300 to 400 people when the engine ramps up to full rate production later this decade.

Lawsuit filed (11-16-10)

Looks like another lawyer is chasing ambulances for money. I wonder if Mr McGregor knew he would be closed without notice? Maybe Segrest should be filing suit against Riley for putting locks on the doors where these people were employed. Common sense seems to be lacking in this case.

Is that you Uncle Miltie? Will they let you play on the internet and blog or do you have to record those conversations too? Riley never locked your doors. You locked them. If your machines were legal what was the problem with the task force inspecting them? I know, I know you were just trying to make an honest living and now these mean old lawyers are picking on you. Poor Uncle Miltie

Victoryland closed its doors of its own accord. No notice was given, no ruling to shut down and leave almost 2000 people unemployed. Milton isn't having to live on unemployment or worried about getting sick and can't afford an office visit. Ray Hill's article on a child flying an American Flag from his bicycle (11-16-10)

Once again Ray ,
You really need to research your articles . This isn't the first time you have passed on 0 or 1/2 truths , that somebody must have passed on to you thru an e-mail .
I realize you are a small time/town editor , but you still have an obligation to print the truth , the whole truth.
I read and watch at least three news sources a day , and have not ran across anything remotely like this article , nor can I find anything in a search of this.
I know its popular to inflame people with such articles, flag burnings , kids not being allowed to pray in school , Confederate battle flag displays ,etc , but we need to stick to the truth - Glenn Dean, Tallassee

__________

Ray Hill's article on a child flying an American Flag from his bicycle (11-16-10)

Mr. Glenn - This is an actual article. If you google "boy american flag bicycle." you will find several entries relating to Mr. Hill's column - RJ

__________

Ray Hill's article on a child flying an American Flag from his bicycle (11-16-10)

I don't know how many channels Glenn Dean has access to but the story about the boy being prohibited from flying the American flag on his bicycle ran on Fox News, Friday the 12th of November, 2010. It is true, Herr Dean! I do resent your inference that it was not! From what I have read of your previous diatribes,it was probably meant to be irritative speculation on your part! - Ray Hall

__________

Ray Hill's article on a child flying an American Flag from his bicycle (11-16-10)

Mr. Dean, here's what a couple of google searches turned up. The first article tells the story about the boy and the school board. The second article tells of a number of riders showing up to ride with him. The event that Mr. Hall wrote about did happen.

__________

Ray Hill's article on a child flying an American Flag from his bicycle (11-16-10)

No wonder I hadn't heard of it , its Fox News . I rate them right up there with the National Enquirer .
Fox News was the one who reported that the Health Care Bill would allow the abortions of children up to two years old (Their Words)!

I am sure it was something blown completely out of proportion . There is no law that prohibits the flying of the American Flag , by a child , from a bicycle.

You all know it as well as I do , but that's not inflammatory , now is it - Glenn Dean

__________

Ray Hill's article on a child flying an American Flag from his bicycle (11-16-10)

Your Right Mr. Hill , I should have checked Fox News , before I accused you of making the story up , or receieving it in an e-mail.
I should have realized that a few people do consider Fox a news source .
It does seem to me that if the Montgomery Advertiser , MSNBC , and AOL News did not deem it newsworthy , that it must not have been much of a story .
I stand corrected ! Thanks to you and Fox news , all school teachers have been put on notice , they cannot trample on the rights of children to fly our flag from their bicycles ! - Glenn Dean

Great article Michael. I have been a Bama fan my whole life. A lot of great memories watching the gameswith friends and family. But the greatest memory ever will always be the day I took my son Cam to his first Bama game when he was 3 years old. With me being a huge fan and my wife being an Aubie we swore not too try to prod him either way. Well a friend called and asked if I wanted two tickets to a Bama/ Ole Miss game and I jumped at it. I ended up making a father son trip out of it and off we went. Veterans Day Remembered by Danny Phillips (11-9-10)

I know how you feel, I would like for all to remember SSG John McGee, 2101st TC, he died on side of a road (IED) in Iraq, May 2, 2005, weeks before end of his tour of duty. I often think about him and his family that is missing him every year at this time. The fellow soldiers of my former unit remember him every on May 2. He is the only on that did not come home. We had some to get injury along the way but they made it home. On this day I think of him and my late father, Early V. Bourrage (U.S Navy). It is funny I forget about myself and the two wars that I have fought in. On this day remember and thank my fellow servicemen. All service because we love this country. God Bless - (Ret.) Veterans Day Remembered by Danny Phillips (11-9-10)

I am very proud of Danny Phillips, as a brother of mine, as a veteran, as a citizen of our country. He served valiantly and courageously in combat. Thankfully he survived, unlike some of those he served with, as mentioned in his article. Danny is one of 5 brothers and Veterans I am proud of: Tim Phillips, US Army; Jeff Phillips, US Navy; Pete Phillips, US Navy, Tab Phillips, US Army. I served 4 years in the US Air Force. Both my Grandfathers, John Godwin and J W Phillips served in US Army in WWI, My father, Jack Phillips, served in US Army in WWII. Aunts and uncles and cousins, too numerous to mention also served their country - Mike Phillips

Veterans Day (11-9-10)

Little history about veterans day.
An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
I was born an raised in Tallassee and I am still serving on active duty in the US Army. I spent 6 years stationed at Ft Lewis,WA where I served 3 tours to Iraq, I am currently stationed at Ft Carson,CO preparing for my 4th tour of duty. I lost 3 great friends 2 of them were KIA on Veterans Day in 2005 so Veterans Day is a day for me that I will never forget. The feeling of knowing that we are supported by family, friends, loved ones, and people that we have never met before is means a lot to us VETS. November 11 is a day to honor Veterans not dishonor them. So I ask of you if you know a veteran that has served or is still serving to thank them if its just a phone call, a card, or a simple hand shake just to say Thank You. You might think those 3 little things doesn't mean much but to a Veteran it means the world. I myself would like to say Thank You to all my brothers and sisters that served or is still serving..... From the Hill (11-9-10)

This is concerning inmates getting a education in Alabama. Inmates are given the opportunity to get their High school diploma or GED and then from there can go on to college and get a college education at tax payers expense. They have been given this opportunity since 1965/1966 with the opening of JF Ingram State Technical College. They have the opportunity to choose from a variety of trades and skills. When they complete a skill or trade they are awarded a college diploma or certificate. There is also assistance provided to inmates upon making parole or reaching their end of sentence such as: helping find them a place to live, help finding a job. The Department of Corrections also works with other two year colleges across the state of Alabama to help inmates get their GED no matter what prison they are in. Faith based groups also assist inmates in getting a GED. The opportunities are there. The inmates just have to take advantage of them - Josh

I wish to thank Josh for taking the time to make me aware of the opportunities state inmates have in availing themselves of an education. I'm am glad that Alabama does take this step in the correction process. I would like to know if this opportunity is also available on the city and county level in the state. Again, Josh, thanks for taking the time to bring me up to date in this matter - Ray

Spanish Fort Radio Comments (11-2-10)

Were you watching the same game we did? Spanish Fort most certainly played dirty. Tallassee was outmatched and yes Spanish Fort was a very good football team. All that other stuff they did was unneccessary and did not help in their victory. I saw a Tallassee Tiger football team where most of the players stayed on the field the entire game (unlike the other team) - during offense and defense - and never gave up and showed more class and heart and the absolute will to fight for what they wanted to achieve. They continued to fight, through being kicked and pushed after the whistle was blown, through being tossed around and knocked down by someone that outweighed them by 100 lbs or more, and still got back up and tried it again. Say what you want to say, Mr. Butler, but what we witnessed Friday night was good sportsmanship that was one-sided, and by a group of boys who definitely, without a doubt, bleed purple and gold. The Spanish Fort team deserved to be called out Friday night during the game and after for their actions - it just was not necessary. Hold your head up Tallassee Tigers, you've faced giants all year and fought hard. Your season was a tremendous success and you all should be proud of yourselves - I know we are proud of you - It's great to be a Tallassee Tiger

Reeltown Round Two (11-2-10)

I would hope that all of Tallassee would come out and support this team, including coaches, players, administration from Tallassee High School and BOE. I also hope that the Mayor and all city councilman would attend. Reeltown folks spend money in Tallassee shopping and they work in almost all the business community. Our team has lost but this city can provide support to this community and the people who support our community with shopping dollars and a solid work force. Go Reeltown Rebels.

Veterans Parade (11-2-10)

As a concered citizen of Tallassee and a student of the Tallassee High School I find it to be pretty sad that hardly anyone comes out to honor the people who fought in the war and are now veterans...BUT we can have a homecoming parade or a christmas parade and the streets are filled with people but there are probably fifty people on the streets.

__________

Veterans Parade (11-2-10)

I'll agree, the parade was a bust. Half of us didn't get to see it because we were closer to the stadium. Someone decided to end it at CVS so many of the band members just walked down the sidewalk to the stadium. However, your comparison to the other parades is apples to oranges. Consider the participants in the parades, there are numerous dance groups, youth leagues, etc. that participate in the Christmas parade so there are lots of parents and grandparents watching. Homecoming is homecoming, people will come out for that. Who participated in the Veteran's Day parade? The band, a bunch of motorcycles, then what? The blame for that falls on the organizers - vet supporter

Paving to start (11-2-10)

I am glad to see that the State is addressing the issue on Hwy 14 and 229. However, we do have a road that is traveled each day that needs to be addressed as well. I do understand that this road will not be a state job, but a city one. The road of concern is Comer Lane, which is one of the routes that has to be taken every morning and afternoon to get students to Southside Middle School. It is a narrow road and there really is no room for widing, but it needs to be resurfaced very bad. The Pot Holes are very bad and are only getting bigger - Starr

__________

Paving to start (11-2-10)

I agree with the other comment about Comer Lane. That road is a death trap. I have complained to the city about that road for years, t0 2 different mayors. Someone is going to have to be seriously hurt or killed before something is done about it. Every time it rains, trees fall across the road. I am on pins and needles everytime I have to go to Southside. On several occasions, I have almost been run off the road by people coming up the hill in the middle of the road in order to avoid the pot holes. Going through the other way by the power company is not much better either because the vines running across the street are liable to choke you to death. It is truly an eye sore for a city that is trying to stimulate its economy and bring in businesses. One trip down EB Payne Drive is enough to run anybody out of town. Shame on you Tallassee for allowing this mandatory school route to exist in this condition. We fuss about everything else, why not about the safety of our streets - Concerned Parent

__________

Paving to start (11-2-10)

I often take people down to the river for photos and we turn onto E.B. Payne Drive and follow it to the river. There needs to be a stop sign because I often meet people coming from the opposite direction and when I am on E.B. Payne with the old mill to my left I sometimes meet people and no one knows who is supposed to stop. I also saw two kids about 14 years old on the old bridge that is not supposed to be used. I believe in historic preservation but if there are no funds to fix the bridge for pedestrians then perhaps we need to destroy it. (I think city lines run under it so we really can't destroy it, I guess). It is an attractive nuisance - Suzy Solmon Wilson

Tallassee vs. Spanish Fort (11-2-10)

Since the tickets are general admission, does this mean that all seats are fair game? I mean there is no reserved seating in the playoffs correct? I was just curious about this because I don't want people to start fussing over seating like church pews. I mean some people are crazy and take ownership of silly things like this - John Jenkins

Congrats to the Tallassee Tigers on a 9-1 season! So proud of each and every one of those boys!!! This Friday night they need everyone's support, everyone's enthusiasm AND everyone's voice! This Team of Tigers will be going to war with a group of Toros and will need this town's Tiger Spirit to come alive and be the 12th man for them!

Tallassee vs. Spanish Fort (11-2-10)

I just read all the hype on here about Auburn & Alabama, can I just say, "WHO CARES???". We have our OWN TEAM going to war this Friday night against Spanish Fort. These are OUR kids, our kids going out on that field playing their hearts out for OUR school and OUR community. If you want to see a real team, a real game, come out and support our own TIGERS. I truly believe we can win this thing. The "Baby Tigers" are coming for you. I hope they are ready, I want to beat them at there best! GO TIGERS!!! - Tallassee Fan

Michael and your help (11-2-10)

The football coverage of the Beauregard game was great! We were not able to travel last Friday night but felt like we were right there watching. I enjoyed the fact of all of us sharing positive comments about our great team. But the way you gave details, etc. and even the band show it was great to see it all!

Keep up the great work – many were commenting this week about how well it was done!! - Laurie Rygiel

Sugar Shack (11-2-10)

Great memories, Trey! Kids today don't even know what they are missing! I remember the rec center in East Tallassee; it was so much fun. And we would pack the new rec center as well! And you are so right about Tim Bunn. He could really put the moves on - Suzy Solomon Wilson

I guess I was one of the "wall flowers" who mostly just liked to talk to my friends. I do remember running to the bathroom if a boy we thought was especially gross was coming to ask us to dance. LOL Middle school dances have not changed. My nephew didn't want to go to his first dance this year until his mom told him he didn't have to actually dance -- that he could just hang out with his friends - Kelly Brown
