Stepping Back in Mill Time (8-31-10)

Thanks for sharing these comments. It was very interesting to read. My mother's family (great aunts, great uncles, and grandmother) were born in Tallassee and some worked at the mill. Most of them have since passed on so I do not get to hear stories from them of their childhood and growing up in Tallassee. My grandmother was born in Tallassee and moved away after she got married. She never got to meet my husband and we now live in Tallassee. We both love living in Tallassee and are proud to call it home.

Chamber (8-31-10)

Just wondering why the writer of the column regarding annexation would argue that the word kids is more powerful than the word children. Here is the quote: "But to say that the children are back in school is not powerful writing. For the purpose of this article, the kids from Tallassee are indeed back in school."

Writer, please explain the semantics of this and tell me why the word kid is more powerful. It just doesn\'t make sense to me, nor was the comment even needed to argue the annexation point - Lover of the English language

Wal-Mart Renovation (8-31-10)

I worked at the Tallassee Wal-Mart for ten years, and I was so excited to hear that the store was FINALLY getting a remodel after MANY years of it being "talked" about. Now, I know that many people in Tallassee would have preferred a bigger store, but what many do not realize is that a store must be at a certain level of store sales per year in order to even be considered for enlargement. At least with the remodel, our little store can finally have a fresh start and give our community what we as store associates always wanted, "a better way to serve Tallassee," and to also work toward a bigger store one day. The people that I worked with for so long always tried to listen to each of their customers on certain items that they wanted us to carry and then try to get that item in our store. Our little Wal-Mart loves Tallassee, and hopefully, this will be the new start. Do we actually have a bigger store, no, but we have to start somewhere. To all my former co-workers at "the love store," I love you guys and miss working with you. Keep on truckin'! - Scott Hammonds

This is great! However, I am afraid this will not keep Tallassee happy. It is just a band-aid to the problem. I think the gift cards are great for the teachers but Tallassee is not the only shoppers at this store!

Trey,

I love that you remember getting only 3 channels (if we were lucky), and the turning of the big pole for reception! I grew up in North Elmore County, and loved my Saturday morning cartoons. We got NBC, ABC and Alabama Public Television-channel 26 on a good day. I may be older than you, but our TVs were black & white.

When I was 8 or 9 we would visit my Grandparents in Mobile. They had a few more channels, and a COLOR set! Wow, I was in TV heaven........do you remember those first color TVs? Those colors jumped off the screen! "Vivid" comes to mind as a discription! Thanks for the memories! - L. Ledbetter

Droopy Pants (8-31-10)

In City ordinance 13-A-6-68 it is stated "A person commits the crime of indecent exposure if, with intent to arouse or gratify sexual desire of himself or of any person, etc." I find it hard to believe anyone could become "aroused" at looking at baggy pants. It is disgusting to say the least. Seems to me that these young (and old) women who wear their tops cut so low that when they lean over you can see it all. Also, the lenth of their dresses leave nothing to the imagination when they sit down, especially when they have on no underwear at all. Granted, I would love to see a change in the way other folks dress, but to address only the "baggy pants" issue??? Come on, unless someone presents themselves totally nude, does the city need to intervene??? - Judy Dennis

Droopy Pants (8-31-10)

I hate "Droopy pants", I mean I really hate them. I have stopped young guys in their tracks and told them to pull up their pants more than once when offended. But for the city to implement a dress code?!?! I have to stop and question is that the correct step. Are you going to tell me I can only wear pants and not a skirt in public because it may not be the regulation length? The school sets a dress code for our children(which I agree with 100%). The work place sets dress codes for their employees to go to work according to its environment and safety purposes. But for our officers to patrol the street to have to worry about whether someone is dressed appropriately? Our officers have more serious issues at hand in protecting our city. And second if a person is exposed with their pants too low, it falls under our current laws and they should be cited for it. Therefore there is no need for additional voting and regulating. Believe me there is a lot of other fashions that I do not agree with and I am sure that everyone does not agree with mine, but I do not feel the city should have to spend their time and money regulating the citizens fashion faults. There is so many other areas that the council can focus on right now that needs attention with all of the growth happening. Respectively... - Joely Stewart

You can legislate many things but not STUPID or ignorance or respect. IF the ones wearing offensive clothing(or not wearing enough clothing as the case may be)could see themselves through the eyes of others and read our minds, I doubt they could even comprehend what was wrong. Drawing attention to oneself through negative actions is a sure sign of immaturity, stupidity, lack of respect or TOTAL indifference. Until this country returns to it strong Christian roots, with discipline at home and school without threats of abuse being yelled for what the Bible says is needed, as well as parents who want to instill good moral values to their children, our society will continue to be plagued with this type of TRASH. It all goes back to the HOME. My soapbox speech will continue later......... - Debra Dillard

Our "BIG BROTHER" city council are at it again. This time they want our overworked, underpaid policemen to police what the citizens are wearing. Are there not already laws covering indecent exposure? Lets stop passing all these new ordinances and concentrate on removing the many silly, costly, civil right invading ordinances that are on the books. Generally speaking, every new ordinance is a civil right taken away - Frank

not sure who mr benton has been talking to about his proposed ordinance, but he seems to be ignoring all the comments posted here and everyone on the street i have talked to. i have yet to meet one person who thinks this should be a crime. and if he is being honest, he is being very selective in who he is talking to about this problem. if he is worried about his adult children being traumatized and influenced by a young man wearing his pants too low, then he is living in a pretty safe world.

i have known mr benton for most of my life and he has been a friend and will continue to be, but this is not an issue for our police to be involved - rhett dennis

Droopy Pants (8-31-10)

It is amazing the discussion on dress that has been commented on from all ages and professions. In the South, we have always been taught one should conduct themselves as a lady or a gentleman, and for the most part this still holds true. It is always the few that cause the ripple in things. I remember bobby socks, mini skirts, boxer short shorts, bell bottoms, tight thight jeans, and many other fashions. This too shall pass. I do encourage parents to have the talk about appropriate and inappropriate attire with their children, but also remember the fads that you went through. It is also important that they understand the message that dress can send out about the person.
It is not right, but people are often judged by how they dress. Mrs. Wilson's idea about clases on appropiate attire could be extended to appropiate behavior and discussions for different occasions. I taught for many years and found that young people are just trying to fit in and find their niche in this world. Classes like these could help them in many ways. They could go on to learn about different professions and ways of handling themselves where they might feel uncomfortable.

I hesitated to reply to this article until it occured to me that my intentions on November 2, 2010 is to vote out any incumbent with a (D) by their name. I'm voting for less government intervention in my life, not more of the same. Do I detest looking at some guys underwear in plain view or his backside?....yes I do, but not to the extend I want them to be charged an exorbitant fine and court cost. In order to enforce any such law would require a police officer to physically touch your hip bone and measure the distance between the hip and pants. I question the sensibility of officers feeling for a persons hip bones and making an accurate measurement. To do anything less than a precise measurement would result in a ticket being dismissed. I suppose there are ways around class action discrimination and frivolous sexual harassment lawsuits. I agree with other opinions on this topic addressing female attire. Are we going to measure tank tops and breast?....wow, wondering if Mr Benton is equally as disgusted with looking at boobs and buttocks hanging from short shorts as those pants on the ground. <snickering> Maybe we should run this by the city attorney and inquire as to the enforceabilty of any such ordinance, any lawsuits, time management break downs, actual revenue collected, etc. Law enforcement in this city needs a good relationship with it's youth; do we really think this is going to improve matters between the police and young adults? .... I think not. Personally, I can think of a dozen issues more important to citizens in Tallassee, but who I am I to say - Rita Pemberton

__________

Droopy Pants (8-31-10)

I have listened to the interview with Mr. Benton and he has yet to put up a convincing argument. I don't want to see anyones undergarments either, but you plan to issue fines to people with their pants below their waste. Why not women with short skirts and low tops? As a man, I find that more appealing than a man's underpants, but this is a two way street, and Mr. Benton prefers to stay on one side of it. If you need an ordinance for baggy pants, then you need one for low tops and short skirts. Thanks Mr. Benton for fixing up houses on the east side, but that has nothing to do with droopy pants, and is completely irrelevant. If you don't want to enter a restaurant and see people with their pants below their waste, then why not press the issue with the private sector? I'm sure they would love your input, and I willing to bet they would love the money of the people with their pants down more. Why would you want to fill the court system with people with their pants down, only for this ridiculous ordinance to be thrown out over a technicality. I think Mr. Benton should personally enforce this ordinance, so the city doesn't have to pay officers to check pants. If Mr. Benton is so concerned then I'm sure he will have no problem with being the one who enforces it. The only logical thing to do is get him a ruler and a ticket book and let him go at it - Henry "Hank" Kent

__________

Droopy Pants (8-31-10)

Wow, interesting on the responses to this. I find public input and the voting public a mass of confusion at times. Obviously clothing worn inappropriately is undesirable to the majority. Unfortunately inappropriate worn clothing starts when the clothes are put on at the residence where the person resides. Do I dare say that this for the most part an under 21 problem sooo, that leads me to believe that the majority of such are leaving said residence with parental or guardian approval (yes, I know there may be a few that change or alter the apparel after leaving but I have to believe that would be a small percentage).
Okay, so the problem is what?...you a correct sir\\madam...the root cause begins at home....lets go parents...get a backbone if you don't want your child to whom you support doing something you don't approve of...... or .... as always, there may be some parents who do approve of such or just can't deal with conflict and them is where the issue should be addressed...clothing worn inappropriately in public is a symptom to bigger problems.... - Stanley Fritz

Council Square (8-24-10)

I have serious concerns regarding any proposed ordinance regulating personal appearance. Not only could there be constitutional issues, but some might construe enforcement as a source of potential discriminatory behavior on the part of law enforcement. The ordinance appears to be directed at males, but what about halter tops on women, "Daisy Duke" type shorts, and thongs? What about woment who choose not to wear bras or to display deep cleavage? Once a government goes down the slippery slope of defining acceptable appearance, there may be no end to it - Jackie Solomon Payne

__________

Council Square (8-24-10)

Why is the Council concerned with the way people wear pants? What about girls who show bellies or too much cleavage? What about boys and men who wear hats inside, which, in my opinion, is totally inappropriate? What about women who wear curlers and/or houseshoes to the grocery store? What if the Council decides women my age can't wear shorts without being fined for it? What about tattos, belly rings, nose rings, earrings, bare legs, cheerleader uniforms, majorette uniforms, swim suits? I heard the tail end of the mayor's report and I thought he said they were exploring the idea and were exploring whether it should be a civil offense or a criminal offense. When did it become a crime to wear your clothes the way you want to? Instead of passing an ordinance outlawing this practice, why not hold a workshop on dressing for success and let these kids and young adults know when it is appropriate to wear certain clothing items a certain way and when it is not - Suzy Solomon Wilson

__________

"....appropriate dress for persons in certain attire" - what exactly does that mean? What YOU think is appropriate might certainly not be appropriate to me and what I think is appropriate might not be that way for YOU. Really? Tallassee has nothing more to worry about than what people have on? What about people who walk after dark, next there will be a city wide curfew in effect. This is a joke ain't it? Proper attire???? This is almost better than a George Carlin joke.Does seeing a young male with his pants down below his underwear affect me?? Of course not,I just marvel at their ignorance about the perception of themselves that they portray. When I see a heavily tattooed person ,believe it or not ,I don't automatically throw up my lunch.Personally ,I wouldn't have one ,but that is their choice to make as a free citizen of this country. This ain't gradeschool and we aren't children to be told everything to do and not do.If our bodies or our dress style offends someone else ,it shouldn't be the government's (local, state or federal) responsibility to make us adhere to their standards.Last time I checked we had a representative form of government in which the elected representatives made choices based on their constituents wishes NOT THEIR PERSONAL views.I would personally like to know just exactly who introduced this and just exactly why?My God we already have traffic cops, shrubbery cops, cigarette cops.....now we have fashion cops???? You wonder why folks are not coming to Tallassee???How about try this.....just for kicks and grins.....How about the local government quit trying to find ways to control every aspect of our lives and profit from it when we don't comply? If it hurts someone or endangers their life ,that's one thing, but a city dress code?????Is this all you have to do with your time and our tax dollars? - Derrick Hartley

__________

Council Square (8-24-10)

what idiot introduced this ordinance? i may sound a little harsh but this is absurd. we have "real" problems in this town and we are spending time talking about how a certian group of people dress? maybe we should be fined for spitting on the sidewalk? how about wearing our shirt tails out of our pants on sunday being a crime? maybe even requiring all women to exchange their pants for dresses? how about opening a bar, or as one of our distinguished leaders referred to as a saloon, in downtown? oops, that's already not allowed.

i always said if you want to hide something, create a controversy elsewhere to distract the masses. wonder what our local politicians are trying to hide now? it's the oldest political trick in the book - rhett dennis

Although I can agree that people should properly dress themselves in public, I do not think that the city should try to pass such an ordinance. I can only hope that this city has much more to worry with than the clothing of its citizens. Dress codes should be enforced by the private sector, not the city, and a majority of the private sector would prefer the people to spend money rather than turn them away. If passed, will the police of this city carry around rulers, and place them on the backside of people to ensure their pants are no less than 3 inches below their waist? Honestly, I do not help pay salaries for our officers to check peoples attire, it's done to ensure that the people of this town are protected and served. Unless you plan on adding some new decals that say "to protect and serve and check your pants", then this ordinance needs to end up in George McCain's waste basket - Henry "Hank" Kent

Yes this is a potential risk for enforcement but I left work last week and came by the Marathon in Jordanville and saw a young male walking past the gas pumps without a shirt, a gold chain on his neck, and his shorts were hanging below his butt where you could see his underwear almost completely. The people that are worried about intruding on someone’s rights are the ones that have not seen the behavior yet. What happened to parents teaching their kids manners and discipline? When are we all going to take pride in our appearance, city, and how we act? Too many people today try to draw attention to themselves by negative actions instead of selfless acts!!! - S Osborne

__________

Council Square (8-24-10)

I didn't mean to imply that I thought a young man with no shirt in public and pants hanging down was appropriate but I do think it is indeed a slippery slope when you start with one dress code enforcement. I completely agree that children should be taught by their parents how to dress. That's why I think instead of passing an ordinance against it we need to educate young people. A few months ago some kids were in my studio viewing some photographs and one had pants on that were low riders. You couldn't see skin but I made the comment that I didn't know how he could stand to walk around with the stride hanging down like that. He said, "Oh, I'm sorry." And he pulled them up - Suzy Solomon Wilson

__________

Council Square (8-24-10)

S, i agree with this being offensive, but you can't target someone because you don't like how they dress. high school girls wear shorts more revealing than the one you referred to. i have seen plenty of young males wearing their jeans below their butts and it makes them look more stupid than it offends me. i think we need to be more concerned with where this town is headed and a dress code will not help us move forward one bit.

now, who was the brilliant person who proposed this ordinance? i hope they are too embarrassed to say.

let's find some younger people who want to see this town have a future and have don't mind thinking outside the box. start at the top and replace every appointed person on every board, comittee, focus group and development/revitalization appointee. some of these people are well intentioned but have not been able to get the job done. others have put their financial or personal interest ahead of what is best for the community. then we can move on to our elected officials, who seem to have thier personal interests ahead of the city's interest, and get the same old faces out of office. we wonder why nothing ever happens in this town and why people want to move out of tallassee. if we ever want to see this town grow, we must get rid of the cancer and misguided leadership in this town. like the saying goes, " the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome"

Does anyone know why they only chose to make most of the lower level seating General Admission with only a few reserved seats located on the bottom level? I don't agree with "just a fan's" comment about putting all the students together by the band. In case you didn't notice, most of the fans sitting in that section were adults. This is also a big cheering section. Perhaps you would consider joining us. Students shouldn't have to be put together. Parents should be responsible for their children and I mean children of ALL ages. If you raise them right, then they know how to act while in public. There were a lot of small (I talking under the age of 7) children running around unsupervised Friday night. Also the ones who used the elevator who didn't really need to but where just to lazy to take the steps should be ashamed. I know there were several kids riding it because they admitted to it. For those of you who don't know, the elevator broke down Fri. night. The football team played very hard and came away with a big win. The band looked very good and the cheerleaders never stopped cheering. But, how can you pledge our flag and there be no flag on the flagpole? How can you listen to the Stars Spangled Banner and NOT remove your hat (young and old)? How can you allow your children (ages 4-14) to run around with no supervision, especially in a new stadium? We have a great new stadium. It looks like we have a wonderful band and football team to watch from it too. I noticed that there was a very good police presence and most or maybe all of our school administrators in attendance at the game Friday night. The problems I saw and heard with this huge stadium were kids running around and people sitting in the reserved seating that had not paid for them. I think this could be a easy fix with administrators and or police on the top section of the stadium. I don't want to be negative, but I just don't want anyone to get hurt - JS

__________

New Stadium (8-17-10)

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that some kids can't or won't sit through an entire football game. I understand this but they do need to be supervised and it's for their benefit not for the benefit of those around them. I suspect that you would feel mighty bad if your 4 year old were snatched from playing under the bleachers because they couldn't sit through the ballgame and you wanted to watch it and let them go play. ( I'm not saying you do this) They could be long gone before you ever realized they were missing. Unfortunately in this day and age there are cruel people in this world that like to harm children. As for needing to take the steps, I took them every time I went up or down them eventhough I suffer from a sever case of fibromyalgia and sfogrens, both of which affect the joints and muscles. I merely stated the facts about the elevator because I saw two individuals there in wheelchairs, one of which had a lot of necessary equipment on it, that could have possibly been stranded due to the elevator failure. It is meant for those that truly need it, not for a toy. As I stated, I had several kids admit to me that they rode it several times. One even said it was because he was fat and out of shape and I know for a fact he plays football on a younger team. Still not afraid to sign my name and still a big Tallassee Tiger Fan - Beth Dunn

Simply put, if you have a credit card, you better hold on to it and make those monthly payments or pay it in full each month. In order to buy anything of true value - you have to have a great credit score. You don't get that great credit score by paying cash for everything - Leslie

Property Rights (8-10-10)

What a difference 50 years make. Tallassee was the largest town in Elmore County.

Grocery stores, clothing stores, sporting good stores, pharmacies, appliance stores, hardware stores and restaurants were open for business on both sides of the river. Trips were only made to Montgomery during Christmas and back to school. All of the school supplies could be purchased at Maddux’s variety store downtown. An Elmore’s 5 and dime store was across form the hotel. Complete scouting supplies were available at Clower Clothing.

We look around today. No grocery stores or restaurants can be found in East Tallassee and Carrville. No clothing stores can be found period in Tallassee. The combined population of Tallassee and Carrville has decreased 20% ( about 1, 000 persons since the 1960 census) Tallassee has become the only Community to lose population of the Towns in Elmore County.

So, lets ask ourselves, what has happened in the last 40 years? Do we blame the Interstate? Do we blame the worlds smallest Walmart store?

What set Tallassee apart from the rest of the Montgomery Metro area over the decades? Has the Community rested on the laurels on The Cotton Mill to take care of the Communities problems, or because of Hot Obrien’s success over a half century ago?

Millbrook, Wetumpka, and Prattville had visions and took a course of action. Like every other town with the ambition to grow, they adopted ordinances, codes and permitting to promote growth and commerce. And by the way, if you pardon my grammar, they were willing to enforce them. Eclectic is posturing itself for growth. They own the water lines all the way to Tallassee City Limits.

I see the posts from those who oppose such an approach for this town. For over the past forty years, the town has not considered such an approach. To imply such codes and ordinances will deprive rights and/or devastate any prospect for anyone to consider pursuing any business and commerce interests seem amusing at best, for Capitalism, growth and Commerce is alive and well in Millbrook, Prattville and Wetumpka.

However, it has not been the case in Tallassee…. and it wasn’t because any regulations, codes or its enforcement that has inhibited it growth, for such regulations and enforcement have been virtually non-existent over the past decades.

The only thing that has grown in Tallassee in the last 50 years is Rose Hill cemetery and the Police force.

I guess the worlds smallest Walmart is to blame - Bobby Dennis

Christmas Parade (8-10-10)

I agree with many others that have voiced disappointment at the “new” shorter parade route. We have a beautiful Bell Park at Five Points. Families and children have gathered there in the past to watch the parade. The Garden Club has decorated it beautifully for Christmas and is a public area to be used. What better way to utilize it than to let a Christmas parade pass by. I was told the Chamber of Commerce made the decision because there had been “complaints” about the traffic on Highway 14. I have lived here for 50+ years and have heard many more complaints about this years parade route than about the “traffic”. When you have only ONE bridge to access Hwy 14 from east to west you still had the same problem this year as in the past. Our city policemen have been able to do an excellent job in the past in “traffic control” following the parades. I hope that next year, consideration will be given to returning to “tradition”- Judy Dennis

Get My Point (8-10-10)

Judy: I enjoy reading your column each week, and espically this one. Taking GOD out of school was the beginning of all the problems. I remember when Mr. Strong had us bring a King James version of the Bible to school and we used it for our world history book. Imagine that happening today. This might be a good start to solving the problems of education. Keep us the good work - Spencer Morgan

Get My Point (8-10-10)

Just happened to catch this article and needed to thank Ms. Ballentine for telling it like it is in her article of "Home of the Free". This country was founded on christian beliefs. Seems we have pushed that all aside allowing it to corrupt our schools, our politicians, our government, our huge corporations, etc. I am 72 years old and and I can see that our patriotism to our country and our military is not what it used to be. I fear for my two little granddaughters who are only 4 and 6 years old. What will they have to look toward at the rate of decline their country is going. If "she" doesn't turn back to God then "she" is doomed. Man seems to think he doesn't need God anymore. God is NOT blessing America now because we have turned our backs on HIM - Joyce Stanley

__________

Get My Point (8-10-10)

Spencer, thanks for your comments. I remember Mr. Strong asking us to do that, and during that time it did not seem unusual because the Bible was still considered part of everyone's life. No, it wouldn't happen today for sure! I'm glad that we lived in those good times, aren't you? Just sorry for all those who missed out back then, and for those who think taking prayer out of the schools was a step forward, when in reality it was a giant step backward!! - Judy Ballentine

__________

Get My Point (8-10-10)

Joyce, thanks for writing all the way from Texas!! Tallassee Times is reaching out to all the states, I hope!! I agree with your response completely. Knowing what happened in Biblical times to those who turned against God, including Sodom and Gomorrah, why do some Americans think that God will "overlook" America when we do the same things?? God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, as He says, and He does not change. Killing our unborn babies for the convenience of the mother is a holocaust within itself that can bring our country down, especially along with everything else that's being undermined as far as what is good and right and holy! God loves America because we are founded on His principles, but as these principles fall one by one, so will our nation if we continue on the rapid road to destruction. Thanks for reading my column and for your comments - Judy Ballentine

Animals in Tallassee (8-10-10)

I have a few issues regarding dogs in my neighborhood around West Patton Street and going down toward West Butler Street. My main concern is a situation where a dog is kept in a fenced area on a cement pad. I guess the fenced may be 20 x 20, but there's very little shade for this animal. The heat on that cement is sure to climb much higher than our temperatures we've been experiencing. The dog doesn't have a dog house and Friday when it rained several inches in our area, the poor Pooch just sat out in it. His owners have been kind enough to lay some old tin pieces over the top of the 5' fence in one corner. But what's more disturbing is that I have called our City Hall and asked that the animal control person go out to check the situation, but nothing was done. Maybe we have 'control' laws, but nothing in regard to how animals in our city are treated.

In the past, I have enjoyed walking my granddaughter through our neighborhood, but no more! At at least two different homes and I think there's more if I checked closely, dogs are tied on chains and run out to the end of their chains as if to charge you if only the chain would break. These are large dogs and quite unpleasant. I would prefer to take a quite walk along my streets without being threatened. Is our neighborhood and city becoming so crime ridden that people needs these animals to guard them? And if so, couldn't an ordinance be passed so the animals can be in a fence instead of tied with a logging chain? And, I might mention these dogs bark VERY LOUDLY at all hours!! At least the ones a few houses from me are loud and bark into the night. I wonder how his owners sleep with all that going on?

I've been meaning to get this off my chest and will also e-mail the Mayor and City Council if I can get their addresses.

I wish to remain anonymous since I will continue to live in this neighborhood.

__________

Animals in Tallassee (8-10-10)

Dear Anonymous,

I can completely understand your concerns. However, you shouldn't be so close minded. First of all, some animals are much better off on chains or leads because they are fence jumpers or diggers. You should know the situation before you pass judgment. These alternative methods could be better protection for you. Secondly, no one can completely control a barking dog. Just because a dog barks does not mean this is an unworthy pet. Also, people should have a right to a large sized animal just as someone has rights to a small animal.

Again, I can understand your concerns about the heat and shelter but the other remarks seem a little rediculous. Thank you and have a great day!

__________

Animals in Tallassee (8-10-10)

I happen to know the dogs you are referring to, These animals are very well taken care of and are up to date on there shots, these animals are not mean. I myself have played with these dogs often. I think the reason you are saying something about this situation is that you dont like this dog breed. These dogs stay inside at night, So i know that they do not bark all hours of the night. DONT PASS JUDGEMENT ON THESE ANIMALS AND OWNERS IF YOU DONT KNOW THE FACTS.

THANK YOU!!!!

__________

Animals in Tallassee (8-10-10)

I want to say I live by the house you are talking about. This couple plays with these dogs everyday, give them food and water and take up a lot of time with time. Just because it rained one day doesn’t say they are being mistreated. If you look around this neighborhood it has gone to pot. The landlords do not care about what their property looks like or who lives in it. Look at the first house on Azalea Street and tell me you want to live beside it. Look at the run down apartments that no one has lived in for years. The way crime is if I could take care of a big dog that would bark I would have several. There are bigger issues in our neighborhood than barking dogs and dogs on leases.

__________

Animals in Tallassee (8-10-10)

Dear Anonymous,

I am aware of who you are and these are MY DOGS. My dogs are loved, well fed, and taken care of. They are not mean and only bark because they are DOGS, that is what they do. So please come to me, your neighbor since you are apparently my neighbor, and talk to me about it. They look mean but they are no where near being mean. Whoever you are, you have targeted us since we moved into this neighborhood since DAY 1. When we get the chance to move, you best believe we will be moving very quickly. It is people like you who cause trouble. My dogs do not bother you. So call the mayor, the city or whatever it is you think you have to do. Either way, nothing is going to happen to my dogs because they are not going anywhere. We keep our yard clean and nice but you want to complain when you have to hear the police at the house down the street every week? I do not see you complaining on here about how bad the child abuse is over there. What about all the run down shacks beside your house? Not complaining about that either I see. So before you go pointing fingers, make sure your own hands are clean. You know where I live so come talk to me, NOT ABOUT ME - anonymous

__________

Animals in Tallassee (8-10-10)

Dear Anonymous,

While you have a right to your opinion and I understand where you might have concerns regarding large animals; in this opinion you really are seeming close minded and are making very huge unfounded untrue statements and accusations in regards to the animals in which you are referring to and their owners! I feel that you may be speaking out of your own fear and stereo typing the breed of the animals you are referring to.

Number one- A persons preference to owning a large dog vs a small dog doesn't always need to be stereo typed to living in a crime ridden area. Some people just like big dogs! Their size just happens to be a benefit in the event someone might try to rob, hurt or perform any crime against the owner or the animal itself. And some times their size although may intimidate someone doesn't always pay off because some dogs even BIG dogs are also BIG babies! And in this event they are BIG babies. Yes unfortunately there is crime in Tallahassee but isn't also true that there has always been crime and crime has always been everywhere not just Tallahassee??? In addition isn't it possible that Tallahassee's crime really isn't increasing rather we live in a small town and people report and voice things more???

Number two- I personally know the dogs in which you are referring to and their owners very well. These dogs may be large but they are also a breed which is often falsely stereo typed! These dogs which you are referring to are very SWEET SWEET loving dogs and they are EXTREMLY LOVED and WELLCARED FOR. Their owners are good people and they treat their dogs like kings and queens. They are properly contained to their yard as to not be in danger of the road, or a nu sense to any neighbor such as pooping in unwanted zones! Although it rained one day does not mean they are mistreated. They do have shade, cover, clean food and water, a pool to lay in, a safe place to be (again in their own yard), they are not a threat in anyway to the neighbor hood, and they receive all vaccinations. You can't control any dog from barking, big or small. Dog's sometimes bark, just as people sometimes voice unfounded or unwanted opinions! These dogs are not barking all hours of the night because they! are regularly brought in at all hours of the day and also every night! They regularly sleep in the bed with their owners!!!! Their owners bring them to all family and friend gatherings which by the way is quite often- while at these gatherings the dogs behave incredibly well and are a joy to be around. They are part of an extremely large family with more than 13 small children who interact with these animals regularly and NEVER have behaved in a threatening manner. They are again SWEET SWEET WELLCARED for dogs!!!!! I can't imagine anyone referring to them as anything less. I am very sorry you are afraid or may not prefer large animals but that might be cured if you would take the time to say a friendly hello to your neighbors and learn a little truth about them and their animals. Who knows you might actually find they are all delightful, just as I have! You can't always look at things with close mindedness or through a foggy glass because you will miss out on the blessings!
that god intended you to see in them. Besides rather than att acking s
omeones character without all facts there are far more pressing matters in Tallahassee like the criminals who fight these dogs rather than love them - or how about the TRASH all over town???

No harm intended- only would like for you to consider your hurtful and false accusations! Please put your voice and energy to more positive and godly things. By the way you gave yourself away with the mention of your granddaughter!

Sincerely,

A concerned citizen of Tallahassee

Sugar Shack (8-10-10)

Trey,

Just a few weeks back, I was telling some of my friends in Andalusia stories about my middle school days in Tallassee and how fortunate I was to have Mr. Stokes. One thing I wanted to mention regarding the sweatbox; it didn't come without a price tag. You see, as most of us who had the opportuntiy to vist the sweatbox found out, it was as though you were renting it for a short time to get your work completed or whatever the teacher or Mr. Stokes wanted you to do. I rememer a time when I went in his office to pay "my rent"; yes, it was licks with his paddle. He gave me the usual two licks and as I started walking out,I heard these dreaded words; "COME ON BACK GLENN THE RENT IS GOING UP!" mr stokes was the greatest. he even made me count the bricks on the gym wall one time.

bruce wilbanks and i were walking back to mr taylor's drafting class after lunch one day and we decided to be the last back to class. now mr stokes, like trey said, was an imposing presence. he had a gait that was rather slow and was slightly pigeon toed. this is a sign that he was a very good athlete in his younger days as atheltes tend to walk on the balls of their feet, and mr stokes surely did. bruce and i came around the corner at the biology lab and looked in every direction to make sure the coast was clear. we were the only ones in the hallway and we began our best "russell" impersonation. we strolled slowly down the hall with our toes pointed inward, chests stuck out like a drill instructor, looking behind each locker saying "dennis!, what brings you into my hallway today?" and bruce following suit. we used every saying we ever heard mr stokes use on the way back to mr taylor's class in his classic walk. just as we arrived at mr taylor's door, we heard this commanding voice from the end of the hallway we just came from say "ok mr dennis, mr wilbanks, come on back down here and let me show you how it's supposed to be done". we were deer in proverbial headlights. our hearts sank and we knew we were toast. it seemed like it took us 5 minutes to traverse the hallway back to where mr stokes was waiting for us. when we got down there, mr stokes said "now turn around and walk back to class like you know you are supposed to do". he let us off the hook that day because he knew the surprise and embarrassment was punishment enough.

mr taylor, on the other hand, was without compassion. we were late for class and explaining mr stokes' punishment was not sufficient. he didn't pull out "mr pecan" but made us write the infamous "sentence" numerous times. i remember it like my own name because i wrote it so many times in 2 years. the sentence simply states "I, Rhett Dennis, must understand that school is an instutition for learning and not for clowning". much more punitive than the classic "I will not talk".

both men had an impact on my life and i thank them both for caring.

a side story about mr stokes before he passed. i was repairing a water meter on ga rd just outside of eclectic and a frail mr stokes pulled off the road and spoke. it was obvious he was very sick and we talked for about 5 minutes. one thing he said that meant the world to me was that he always considered me a friend. i had tears in my eyes by the time he left because i didn't think anything could ever bring down such a strong man. he drove away with a smile on his face. it meant a lot to me that he cared about all of us and he never gave up on us - rhett

Thank you Trey for the wonderful way you wrote of my grandfather. He was a wonderful man and I have no doubt that he influenced many people who came in contact with him. Over the years I have had many people tell me how much they loved and what they learned from "Big R." Mona Norrell and I talked this past school year about writing a book titled "Words of Wisdom from Big R." I'm sure there are many people who would be interested in reading it.

I often get asked by administrators in interviews why I became a teacher. I always tell them that Russell Stokes influenced me when deciding what career I would choose. I have always loved children and wanted to work with him. Witnessing the way that he treated students and the way they respected him touched me. I was confident that I wanted to be just like him! I wanted people to speak of me long after they had left my classroom. If I could be half the educator he was I would be satisfied.

"Pop" was a strong man and I loved him tremendously. I see lots of him in my father, my brother, Kyle, and I'm told by my grandmother, Zelda, that there is a lot of him in me. She has always said that it takes a strong person to marry a Stokes. My mother and aunt have always agreed with her. She has told my husband, Eric, that the Stokes children are known to be stubborn. I'm sure everyone who has worked with "Big R" knows that we have him to thank for that.

I was touched by all the wonderful things that people have written about my grandfather. I also love hearing stories about their days at Southside. I was sad that he retired the year before I moved to 5th grade. However, I was blessed to have him as a grandfather and mentor. No one will ever come into this world like him. He was definitely one of a kind - Courtney Stokes Watson

Glad to be from Tallassee (8-3-10)

I was coming home from Montgomery Friday afternoon. My old truck was running about the same temperature as it was outside, about 240 degrees (lol). I pulled over at the Shell station off of highway 231 to get the truck and me cooled down. I was there for about 30 minutes. In this time frame I had a couple of people stop and ask if I needed any help. Both were from Tallassee. The first guy I did not recognize. He asked, you don't recognize me do you? I took a closer look and said, why Thomas Brantley. I had not seen Thomas in a while and I guess he had been working on something and had gotten gray dust all in his hair and beard (lol). The second stop was made by Rhett Dennis. I did recognize old Rhett. Thanks Guys. It is nice to know that you both still recognized this old Tallasse boy - Joie Varden

Mayor's Trip (8-3-10)

Would like to know who paid for our Mayor's trip to New York City. I don't really think the Mayor had to take this trip. I believe the city's investment banker could have handled this for us - Concerned Citizen of Tallassee

TCS Only Tri-County system to make AYP (8-3-10)

We shouldn't need to have a state report to determine whether or not we are successful. We teach our kids so many things that are not measured on a reading or math test. We teach them to study, but also to play. We teach them the importance of teamwork, but also tolerance of individuality. We teach them to be humble winners and gracious losers. We teach them how to celebrate, but also how to grieve. We teach character, technology, fine arts, fitness, self-confidence and self-discipline. We teach them to be good citizens, and all of these things do not show up on the AYP report.

Nevertheless, it is good to have the State dept validate the good job that we know we are already doing. I am blessed to work with such a wonderful faculty, and they deserve a lot of credit for this accomplishment! The students also responded to the challenge that was before them, and I look forward to their return next week - Kenneth Varner

Tallassee Revitalization (8-3-10)

I'm sure many of you have seen where Buffet, Gates, and other billionaires are planning to donate about half of their net worths and the beginning estimate was about $90 billion. I say the Tallassee Historical Society and other non profits like the Mt. Vernon Theatre and possibly other get all these plan ideas that Bolton and others have put together and go for it. The Learning Tree is being proactive with Pepsi, why not fthe revitalization of Tallassee? What about the rec center? These projects are mere drops in the bucket when you see $90 billion out there to be given away. Go ahead and laugh it up, but why not? - Jordan Knight

Seniors Support Coach (8-3-10)

Good enough for me seniors. I believe there are many that simply leached onto a negative event and went in for the kill with blood in the water without processing the event as a whole with due diligence. Some of these are leaders in several positions including religion and should be ashamed of their tactics without even knowing the entire truth. What was that about casting the first stone? Maybe there are some that should take a step back and take a look in the mirror with their eyes open. What was their true agenda? - J Donovan

Seniors Support Coach (8-3-10)

I really think Coach Dollar is a good football coach. I think the problem is the athletic director position and the fact that the girls athletics have been lacking coaching for a long time. It seems that football is the only sport we have in this school system - football and wrestling. It would be wonderfuld to see as much emphisis put on girls sports as they put on boys. My granddaughter went to a girls basketball meeting and I don't think they even had enough girls show up to have a team. Just look at what happened with the girls softball this year with several girls guiting the team because of the coaching so I have been told. I know that football brings in a lot of money but girls sports would too is someone would take the time and energy to build it up - Concerned Grandparent!!

Tigers Have New Hoops Coach (8-3-10)

What an exciting time for the boys basketball team at THS. I am sure this new hire will be an outstanding addition to the THS coaching staff. I am wondering who will be the new women's basketball coach. If I am not mistaken, this is the third boys coach in a row (Shane Smith, Tony Taylor and now Fred Drake) to be hired from outside of our system, via an applicant search. I am sure there MUST be a search going on for our girls team as well. If not, it is certainly understandable why there is a pending Title IX lawsuit - concerned about girls athletics as well

Any word on girls coach, I have heard Coach Waters will take the position with an assistant.

*Editor's Note: Yes. Waters will take over the varsity girls program.

I am glad to see that we have hired what appears to be a good coach. I wish we would put this much effort into all of the coaching searches that we do. If it is not football or baseball the system seems not to care who the A.D. throws into the position. I think it is fuuny that someone new to Tallassee would make this statement "I'm definitely very impressed with the sports tradition and the backing," he said. "It seems like all sports get equal treatment and respect." I am sure he is one heck of a football coach also! - A concerned parent
