Baseball (4-27-10)
Please
do not compare the 1998 State Championship
Team with this years team. Your record
may have been as good but your final
outcome embarrassing. You played a
much easier area than in 1998. You
had double elimination were as the
1998 team had single elimination.
And most of all the 1998 players did
not give up and quit when things were
not going their way. You have a team
that was made up of a group of young
men who did just as well in the playoffs
as freshman and sophomores in 2008
against a much harder playoff schedule.
In reality these young men should
have improved and been able to advance
past the 2nd round. In reality it
does not matter if you win 100 games
in regular season if you can\'t bring
it to the table in the play-offs -

I
dont recall reading where this team
was compared to the 1998 team. Every
team has its own identity. I think
that this group of young men represented
this school and town with alot of
class and had a very sucessful season.
If you are so tired then take a nap
and quit using your energy degrading

success then leave town - Get

__________

Baseball (4-27-10)
A couple of things. I don't recall
anyone comparing this bunch to the
98 team. Also, where do you get that
area play was a lot tougher back then.
I disagree with that immensely. Back
then, our main competition was Eclectic.
How is that more difficult? Beauregard
is a very good team that SHOULD go
far as well. Do I feel like we were
the better team? Yes, but we didn't
take care of business Friday. That's
part of the game.
This
program was almost left bare a couple
of years ago. Coach Clayton and staff
have done an outstanding job rebuilding
this program to where it can be respected
again. This season was the beginning
hopefully. THS Baseball will continue
to improve and put a good product
on the field.
Also,
more and more Tallassee Baseball athletes
are getting noticed by Universities
in this state and beyond. That is
what it's all about. Giving opportunities
for these young men to shine at the
next level, as well as becoming better
men. In my opinion, THS Baseball is
definitely on the right track, despite
being put out in the 2nd round by
a team just as good as us.

__________
THS
Baseball (4-27-10)
You
should be ashamed of yourself for
downgrading the accomplishments of
this years baseball team. The young
men on the baseball team worked as
hard as any other in 5A baseball and
the record is one of the indicators
of that. The other indicator is that
as of now there are 3 of the seniors
going on to play college baseball
and one college football. If you value
success only by state championships
then there have only been 7 successful
seasons in the history of Tallassee
baseball (none of those in 5A by the
way). Please don't offer your comments
when you don't know anything about
the kids, its obvious your head is
in the sand. The only person comparing
the teams is you and you obviously
don't support our kids so keep your
mouth shut. You may be tired....but
I'm tired of all the negativity when
the baseball team had a great year
and you seem to find it neccessary
to throw your two cents in when your
two cents are uninformed and ridiculous.
When you decide to support the young
men in the program then give your
opinion, until then we don't want
to hear from you. Go offer nonsupport
to someone else's program - Proud

Downtown
Parking (4-27-10)
It
has come to our attention that there
have been one or two complaints about
the two parking signs in front of
our business on Barnett Blvd.
The
two signs read "Barbershop Parking
Only, others will be towed."
The signs were put up in February
2010, and taken down on April 21st,
2010.
It
should be noted that although some
ignored the signs, not one vehicle
was towed.
Before
the signs were placed, we asked our
immediate business neighbors if the
posting of the signs would be a bother
to them. we also discussed the signs
with the property owner. We were told
by all persons spoken with that the
signs would not be an issue to any
of them.
The
two signs were put up because we have
many patrons who are elderly or disabled
and unable to walk down the block,
and due to limited parking space,
as Sistrunk Street is closed to traffic.
During
the tax season (January - April),
we received countless phone calls
from our patrons who wanted to come
in, but could not get a parking space,
or they thought we were too busy to
take them.
As
a business we realize that there will
be times that other businesses wil
be busier than usual. This would not
be a problem if the parking was taken
up for a few minutes, but we were
having to deal with a full street
for up to two hours at a time, sometimes
longer.
From
January to April is far too long for
a lot of business flow to generate
enough money to pay rent on a building
and utilities, and support a family
of five. We sought a solution - two
little parking signs.
We
are aware that Barnett Blvd. is a
state highway, and we could not enforce
the signs. We were hoping that by
posting them those who were going
to other businesses would not park
out of common courtesy, and most
of the time it worked.
Thank
you to those of you that bothered
to pay attention to our signs. The
simple act of paying attention most
certainly helped to keep a small downtown
businees alive.
Perhaps
more citizens should offer more creative
solutions to the current problems
of our historic downtown district
and encourage and help them to flourish,
rather than attepting to cause them
more hardship in our troubled economy.
To
those of you that complained, surely
you will flush with pleasure to know
the offending signs that bothered
you so much have been removed.
Sincerely,
-

Tigers Baseball (4-13-10)
This
week, myself and other coaches have
been looking back to when Tallassee
Baseball was making their run in the
mid-90's. We all remembered that Southside
Field was a place that other teams
hated to travel to. Not just because
the the ballclub was dominant, but
also because of the fan support. Students,
teachers, friends, family, and other
Tiger baseball supporters packed the
house every single night. They wouldn't
come just to hang out either. The
fans would be into every pitch like
they were playing as well.
This
Friday marks the beginning of the
5A State Playoffs. Tallassee will
host the 1st Round and possibly (if
we advance) the 2nd Round. These young
men need that 10th man to come back
to Southside Field. This place needs
to be packed, standing room only,
and LOUD. This has been the best regular
season record-wise that THS has had
in a while. We have a tremendous shot
at making some noise and going far
in the playoffs. These boys have been
working VERY hard since November just

Ray,
I enjoyed reading your column and
especially the comments and quotes
you included. The one by Jeff Cooper,"An
unarmed man can only flee from evil,
and evil is not overcome by fleeing
from it!"(Jeff Cooper), brings
to mind the verse by James (the brother
of Jesus) when he said, "...Resist
the devil, and he will flee from you."
(James 4:7) Even Jesus had to resist
the temptations of Satan and did so
by quoting Scripture verses, which
certainly made him flee. Evil is not
overcome by fleeing from it for sure....but
when we stand against evil and resist
him, then he sees he has no strength
with us and leaves us alone...for
a while. Of course, he never leaves
us alone until we enter eternity.
But the more we resist him, the stronger
we become and the devil has to find
new ways to tempt us. He knows our
weaknesses, and that's exactly what
he goes for!! Just thought I'd comment
on that quote. Never heard it before.
Good one!! - Judy Ballentine

New
Business in Tallassee (4-13-10)
OK,
cause I have a few comments about
the possible business, or rumor of,
that was going to come and they backed
out.
I
have lived her for most of my life,
except for 3 years when in Montgomery,
and I have seen this town stay the
same. Now there have been some minor
changes but nothing of any significance
for growth and stimulation of the
economy. I am happy about the expansion
of the stadium, I am pleased to see
the plans for the mill, and I am happy
that Jack’s decided to locate
here but if we, as a city, restrict
business to a point that they leave
then we are shooting ourselves in
the foot. I want Tallassee to be beautiful
and appealing, to all age groups,
and not exclude any business that
may want to come. We should not push
a business away we should encourage
them to locate here and provide as
much assistance as possible for them
to be seen and attract their customers.
I know rumors can be started and can
grow out of control so I want to know
the facts about Captain D’s
and the reason they decided not to
come. The rumor is that the sign issue
caused them to decide not to come.
Can this be verified or not? If this
city limitation is a safety issue
then I can live with that but if it
is only for appearance then we need
to reconsider, especially in these
economic times, and think of letting
new businesses place the sign they
want in order for them to come. If
other businesses wanted to come here
then the business they stimulate is
not only after their construction
has ended it is before it begins with
the land prep and the people wanting
places to eat, sleep, and shop while
they complete the jobs they have.
I thank you for your time - Stephen

I was saddened to hear that TDYB had

that's "THEIR" business.My
problem with this is why would you
wait til the league has started to
inform parents.Wake up around here
Tallassee,we're already behind!If
the kids don't miss any league ball

I think the by law was that if you
play travel ball you will not be eligible
for the allstar team. I personally
think it is a great rule. Why...better
yet how would you do both. One would
be at the expense of another without
a doubt. When would you play travel
tournaments???...on league off dates???
What is that every 4th Friday or so.
Next let's say little johnny plays
on Friday night and he pitches a compete
game but he is the ace on his league
team...THEN WHAT?? Do you think he
will be effective on Saturday? What
if he's goes and plays in an all day

he gonna be the best he can be for

travel ball without conflicting with
league, there are a lot of sunday only
tourneys.The travel teams recruit
from a broad range of players. If parents
explain to the travel coaches that
little johnny has to pitch in league, thats
no problem they can easily find a
pitcher, travel teams are full of good
pitchers.Sounds like this pitching
ordeal is the only legitimate excuse
the tdyb board has.I'm not bashing
the league here in Tallassee,it is
full of good talent and parents.I
just don't understand why people have
a problem with parents wanting to
try and better their children.I had
intentions of making this short but
I must continue. Why would you push
a good player away like they did in
11-12s.Don't you think he could have
been an asset to the all-star team!Get
out and experience one of these tourneys
before you bash them, take your child
to one to watch a friend play, who
knows your child might be asked to
play!Would you tell him no?Most of
these organizations have former MLB
players and ex college atheletes as
hitting and pitching instructors working
with players.Would you deny your child
an opportunity to learn from such
individuals?
The DIXIE YOUTH RULE states that no
DUAL PARTICIPATION is allowed during
all stars.TDYB's rule states that
if you play travel ball you won't

Why then can\'t the kids take some
time off from travel ball and just
participate in league. I understand
the view of parents wanting their
child to get the instruction from
these prior players. I think it is
great. It sounds like the players
were given the option and if they
chose travel ball that can\'t be good
for the moral among his peers. Whether
true or not, his league teammates
will more than likely feel like that
were less important to the kid. That

Travel Baseball (4-6-10)
Let me start off by saying that I
am a travel ball fan. My son has played
for many years BUT we stop long enough
to give a break before league ball
starts. But that's our family decision.
And as much as it costs to participate
in travel ball your child defintely
has to have a love for the game. Travel
Ball is a big commitment on both the
parts of the parents and the children
that play.
The
parents of the child that quit in
11-12 league have been a part of league
ball long enough to know the rules.
The child is a VERY good ball player
but to post that we just lost the
BEST player in the league was very
disrespectful not only to this child's
peers but to the parents as well.
The only problem I have about what
happened is how it happened. I have
no doubt this child will continue
to excel in this sport and wish him
luck. I only wish they had made that
decision before league started because
it was unfair to his coach and his
teammates to lose a strong player
but his team should be commended on
how they rallied together and played
this weekend.
And
as far as AllStar is concerned - If
I'm not mistaken several of the players
that were chosen for the AllStar team
WERE travel ball players in off season
and have been for some time. Tallassee
would have a much better team if AllStar
picks were based on the best players.
I don't believe that has anything
to do with playing travel ball.
It
is true that there are alot of things
that need to be worked on in regards
to TDYB but we also need to stop and
remember that these people do this
on a voluntary basis and take time
out of their personal lives to do
so. If there are things we dislike
- maybe we need to step up and see
where we might could help or offer
suggestions rather than name call
or make ugly comments - Youth

I
agree with the statement pertaining
to "feeder programs". The
success of those teams have dropped
off from what they once were, but
giving up on our leagues would only
contribute to the problem. I prefer
addressing issues instead of hoping
they change themselves or go away.
Travel ball wasn't around in Tallassee
during the 80s and 90s and Tallassee
held up fairly well. Side note: Travel
ball was being played all over the
US during that time and Tallassee
all-star teams sent many of them home
with a loss.
What
if both were possible. Play travel
ball if you prefer and also league.
The combination of the two could only
help a player. Playing both at the
same time opens the door for abuse
of a pitchers arm, etc. I understand
the issue with letting the travel
coach know the kid can't pitch, but
the temptation is still there.
In
reference to the 11-12 yr old I have
no knowledge of that situation, other
than TOP BLEACHER referring to it

I
don't know if this would work here
or not but why couldn't league ball
be played on tuesday and thursday
nights? Then you could do what you
wanted on weekends!From what i've
read the only downfall to playing
both is pitching.OK what if the travel
ballers were not pitching at all, someone
tell me what would be the next excuse
for them not to play both.
This is an idea for the board and
this may have already been done but
here goes.Contact the surrounding
leagues and ask what their playing
schedule is because it sounds like
all of them are allowing travelball
to be played. That's just an opinion
but something needs to be done to
find a happy medium.
I think the league has good players
and parents and the same for travelball.Something
needs to be done to settle all of
this.If there is anyone that don't
beleive that baseball is not important
to Tallasseans,read the opinion pages!The
two longest threads have to do with

One other idea, why don't the league
contact the boy's parents and ask
him back on the team? There is a such

I'm
the parent of the 12 year old that
decided to leave TDYB. Please let
me start off by saying that yes we
have been playing league ball for
sometime now but still do not know
the offical rule on playing league
and travel ball at the same time.
We have never been given any paper
work on the rules that the TDYB has
in place,if you do please let me know
the offical rule. I will assusre everyone
that my son made the decesion to leave
the league. We told him to make sure
this is what you want because you
will have to take alot of talk from
your piers and the adults in this
town and believe me his has taken
alot. I can understand the kids being
mean because there are kids and it's
our place to teach them better but
the adults in this town I didn't expect
anymore or any less from them. I do
REGRET not taking my son to his team
to let them know why he made his decesion.
But we were little upset that he had
to make this decision but at the same
time was asked to let him play Saturday
so he could help beat the the team
we were playing. That didn't set right
with me. Telling him you are not allowed
to play both but you are allow to
play Saturday. For the comment he
was the BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE
we never said that but to whomever
stated that I thank you. My son really
LOVES this game and we will support
he decesion to play travel ball along
as we can. In the future it would
be nice if all rules are given up
front so the players and the parents
can make there decesion before going
thru all this mess. One more thing
would everyone be this upset if the
player that left to play travel ball
was not ONE of the best players on
the team? I would also like to state
that Coach Sterling is a good person
and has diffcult job ahead of him
and we are not trying to make even
harder on him we just want the best

Travel Baseball (4-6-10)
If
a young man decides that he wants
to play travel ball then that is his
decision along with his parents. People
should simply respect that and encourage
the young man instead of making comments
about 'taking away from the league'.
First off what does this young man
owe the league? Why should he be ridiculed
for not participating in league with
everbody else? That is not right at
all, and if you think it is, you've
got bigger issues.
If
a young man signs up for league ball
then that should come first in my
opinion. He needs to be there for
all practices and all games and travel
ball should not conflict with any
of those. What he does outside of
that is his business. That includes
participating in travel ball. Rules
that enforce no travel ball and no
all-star participation if you do participate
are simply selfish and narrow minded.
The people making such rules should
be ashamed of themselves. You are
forcing these young men to make decisions
that are not called for in my opinion.
Why can't they enjoy playing with
their school peers and then do whatever
they want once they leave the park?
Do
you justify it with the increased
injury possibilities by playing more
and pitching too much and taking away
from their DYB team? I agree if they
take away from the league activities
and the requirements therein then
that is not right. However, I'm sure
that people can respect that and accomodate
their schedules accordingly and still
take part in travel ball in a limited
role if they so choose. How can you
justify telling a kid what they can
or can't do when they are awy from
league ball activities?
What's
next? No jumping on the trampoline,
no bike riding, no swimming, no physical
activity outside during league ball
season because you might get hurt?
You laugh and say that's silly, but
so is telling a kid no travel ball.
He can get hurt at all these other
activities as well. You're simply
trying to justify a selfish rule by
acting as if you are looking out for
their well being, all the while it
is nothing more than a selfish rule
that is restrictive and unfair.
Tis
the season for ramming rules and regs
down the throats of people. You're
doing nothing different than the Obama
administration. Some of you people
on the board need to be man enough
to admit that you were wrong and then
go tell the young man that left that
your rules are unfair and welcome
him back no strings attached. I highly
doubt this will happen because of
the prideful, selfish, self-serving
ways that are already prevalent. This
rule needs to be revisited and revised
because there are several parents
that feel this is not right.
It's
always a few that ruin it for everybody
just so the rules will be self-serving
and meet their wishes. You need to
really ask yourself if this is fair
and be honest about it - JL Henderson

Simply put: In my opinion a kid (good, decent, not
so god) should stay with the boys
that will win his city a "CHAMPIONSHIP".
I'm talking about now or 5 years from
now...doesn't matter. Isn't that what
everybody wants anyway? Isn't that
the spark of the last two baseball
threads on this opinion page? Isn't
that why Mark Segrest wrote the letter
that basically started all this? CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!
(OR LACK THERE OF???) How is leaving
a league comprised of current and
future teammates to play with kids
from other towns going to win this
city a championship? I ask you what
is better? A travel ball trophy or
a Championship (sub district, district,
state etc.) In a town Tallassee's
size, league ball should be number
1 every time and travel ball should
be played late summer, fall and early
winter - Lover of the Championships
__________
Youth
Travel Baseball (4-6-10)
Dear Lover of Championships -
That's
your opinion, but I ask again what
is wrong with a kid choosing to play
travel ball? If the young man is good
enough when he gets to the high school
level, you can bet your last dollar
that he'll be on the field irregardless
if he play TDYB or travel ball.
There's
a player at the varsity level that
has moved to the Tallassee district
and is currently contributing quite
well. Why don't you just pretend the
travel ball child lived in a different
school district and moved here if
it helps your feelings about the whole
situation. The young man never played
with the Tallassee kids until this
year and he's doing just fine. Baseball
is baseball ibaseball, don't try some
sort of silly line about keeping everybody
together just to justify your backwards,
baseless opinion.
The
bottom line is we are having to adhere
to stupid rules that shamelessly punish
a child. How do teams like Kentucky
and others win in basketball with
players from all over the country
that barely play together for one
year? Your opinion is ignorant and
self serving - JL Henderson

the 11-12 yr old kid should be recruited
back to the league.Maybe there isn't
a by-law that says he can't come back.As
long as these travel ballers are making
league their first priority whats
wrong with them playing.I still haven't

My
husband and I were the ones who first
went to the Dixie Youth Baseball League
meeting in Troy to find out about
it versus Little League. We were so
very pleased in how the league wanted
to be mindful of the child and his/her
health, growth, and physical abilities.
The rules were fair, concise, easily
understood and well written. We came
back and presented what we found out
to the Little League Board. It was
voted on to change and change we did.
Local rules were made, always with
the child in mind. We were not worried
about championships or anything to
do with all stars. We were concerned
about our children having a safe sport,
that taught good skills, good sportsmanship,
and teamwork.
We also listened to the school and
tried to fit their request in the
schedule. It was to have weekend games
during school, practices were to last
only two hours, and no practice on
Wednesday. We did this.
We also listened to the ministry.
We did not practice on Wednesday or
Sunday.
These
rules were practical and made good
sense. But you know what. It was not
long after this league started that
we had teams winning tournament after
tournament in all stars. The reason
was that they loved the game, they
played together so well that they
knew the plays and where to make the
next move. The coaches learned the
basics of teaching the basics.
Basics
were gone over time and time agin.
Ball is not only a physical ability
but a mental one as well. It takes
an alert mind and a good knowledge
of play to understand where the next
play is going to have to be made.
Teamwork is so important. Kids learn
from each other, they encourage each
other, they depend on their teammates.
They all want to be good, to do their
best. Even when they are nervous and
stand at the plate, they stand there
because they don't want to let the
others down. This takes a lot of courage.
He/she is a good player!
Parents I hope you can work this out.
But please remember that your children
hear all this fuss, they learn to
complain and mope from hearing all
the talk. Let them have fun, enjoy
the summer. Let's thank those who
are spending time with the children
and give them our support. They need
it.

From all the comments I have read
on this page you are missing the main
picture. The rule is set in place
to protect the ball player. According
to the American Orthopedic Society
sports medicine (AOSSM) Before 1997,
Tommy John surgery was performed on
only 12 of 97 patients (12%) who were
18 years or younger. This according
to E. Lyle Cain, MD fellowship director
for the American sports Medicine institute,
Andrews Sports medicine and Orthopaedic
center, in Birmingham. In 2005 alone,
62 of the 188 ( 32%)operations performed
were on high-school athletes.
This
can be directly contributed to the
proliferation of year round base leagues
and young kids not getting the required
rest between outings.
Now
to address the issue of travel ball
and grooming a High School title.
Tallassee has a rich history of baseball
titles, and most of them were before
the time of travel ball teams. These
teams were comprised of guys who played
together from the time we were tee
ball age, to the time we started high
school. This time together allowed
us to gel as a cohesive unit -

My son plays on the HOOKS, the team
that lost a player last week. That’s
an unfortunate incident and hopefully
everyone can learn from this situation.
I would like to take this opportunity
to commend our team on their POSITIVE
ATTITUDES and TEAM SPIRIT. My son
was upset about a losing player, but
he knows his team consists of more
than just one good player. The Hooks
are a team and should be recognized
as a team!! Unfortunately, some adults
have forgotten this and assume that
our team was made of only one player
and that’s a really big slap
in the face to the other players on
the HOOKS!! My son is friends with

I have a comment about the pitching
issue on travel ball. If the person
that made the pitching comment had
done there homework, they would know
that you don't pitch a kid a whole
ball game on a Friday night. You have
to stretch your pitching out over
the whole weekend..playing approx.
4 to 5 games over the weekend. I have
VERY rarely ever seen a kid pitch
a whole ball game in travel ball.
Travel ball teams have about 6 pitchers
per team. Each player will pitch 2
innings sometimes 3 if they are LOW
on the pitch count. If you think for
one minute that TYB cares about your
kids and there pitching arms you need
to go to a game and start counting
pitches. They will throw a kid 150
pitches as long as they are helping
them win a game. High Schools, Colleges,
and Major League teams even keep a
watch on the pitch count. See how
many of them throw over a 100 pitches
a game. Our kids are still young,
growing and developing. Check around
and see how many kids in Tallassee
have had surgery on there arms that
are/WERE pitchers. These kids have
not even made it to the Varsity level
yet. You'll be SURPRISED!!!
There
was also a comment on here about the
POOR board members who dedicate (volunteer)
so much time to the league. So WHY
do they CHOOSE to be a board member
and COACH? Why does this justify putting
there child on All-stars??? How do
you justify a board member being a
coach? Why do you have to be in an
elite group to be a board member or
coach?? Why do you never hear of a
position opening up on the board.
They don't announce it at the games,
its not on the radio or in the news
paper. How do they get elected?? WHO
elects them??? Where is these BY-LAWS
that we keep hearing about??? Why
don't they give a copy out at sign-ups
and have the parents sign off on them??
As far as the by-laws, they change
so quickly they can't get anyone that
can type that fast. This crap has
been going on at TYB for the past
15+ years and its not going to stop
anytime soon! - TYB needs to grow

Youth
Travel Baseball (4-6-10)
Oh, for the good ole days??... I remember
a time in my childhood and youth,
there were only 4 teams in Little
League. There was only one ball field.
My Grandfather used to sit on the
back porch of our house and watch
the games. I thought is was unique
to have the ball park virtually in
our back yard. I looked forward to
the day that I too would play on the
field.
I would attend tryouts each season
in hopes of being selected and each
season I was never selected. It troubled
me as a child to want to play Little
League baseball so badly, and I was
not able to do so. The thought of
never having the opportunity pass
this way again affected me greatly.
However, each season I would go to
all the practices and run bases during
infield drills and help with the equipment.
I always remember the "wars"
between Howard Earl and Thomas Stalnaker.
Poor old Forrest Knowles would get
caught in the middle as the Umpire.
The games AND practices were highly
competitive and spirited. I remember
some fine ball players........Jimmy
Brodzinski, Mark Taylor, Benny Quinn,
Randy Cole, Johnny Clayton. Keith
Butler, David Veasy and Grady Mann's
sons to name a few.
On Sundays, some of my childhood friends,
mostly which didn't play on any teams
would play our "sandlot"
games and the Ball Field. Ultimately
we got into mischief. We ( I ) would
climb the backstop a steal cases of
baseballs and hit them out of the
park....leaving the discarded boxes
and wrappers on the pitchers mound.
But a funny thing happened on the
way to the Forum. I got my butt in
trouble. When word got around about
our (my) deeds, some of the guys on
the teams were threatening to "put
me in my place". My parents got
a phone call from Thomas Stalnaker.
I was terrified, that my father would
exact a form of justice we don't preach
any more. When this form of justice
was implied by my father to Thomas....Thomas's
reply was "have his (you know
what) at the Boy Scout meeting Tuesday
night."
I will never forget that walk down
the street to the Scout meeting that
night. Half the ball team was in the
Troop. They were all waiting with
baited breath for me to arrive. Upon
arriving at the meeting, Thomas asked
the Troop "What do you think
we ought to do about thissun?"
The overwhelming response was to "wear
my (you know what out)". Thomas
then suggested...."Why not we
just vote thissun into the troop and
ya'll can figger out what ya'll want
to do with him." The vote was
unanimous. Funny how things work out.
For I had my the best times of my
childhood and youth thru Scouting.
We were very fortunate to have such
selfless people like Thomas and Howard
Earl give of themselves to so many
especially having to put up with all
the mess we put them through.
Today there are so many teams, so
many leagues and 3 ball parks now.
During the season, the street behind
the house now resembles Auburn/Alabama
tailgate parties. The lights don't
go off until after 11:00 P.M. The
parking and Facilities have become
not only inadequate, but very inconvenient
if not annoying to the neighborhood.
The good of it is, that so many parents
are involved with their kids, and
for the kids to have the opportunity
participate in a competitive and social
environment. It is troubling to too
see the resentment, accusations, and
finger pointing demonstrated by some
the parents posts when these opportunities
exist for the kids that were not afforded
to me and others during my childhood.
Based on the posts, we have a good
idea how the parents feel........
I wonder how the kids really feel
about it???? - Bobby Dennis
Citizen
Concened about Annexation (4-6-10)
I
currently reside outside the city
limits. With all the talk about annexation,
I'm concerned about how it will affect
me. I don't have any representation
now, so how will I have representation
once I am annexed in? How will the
extra tax money be used? Will it be
wasted as it was before?
Listed below is what I see that annexation
gets me:
The
"Top Ten" list of what you
get with annexation
1. Higher sales tax.
2. Higher tax on your telephone bill
3. Higher tax on your water bill
4. Higher tax on your cable bill
5. Higher tax on your gas bill
6. More restrictive zoning ordinances
7. More restrictive building and maintenance
codes
8. More restrictive ordinances, regulations,
and licensing requirements
9. Loss of property rights
10. An inept municipal bureaucracy
incapable of fiscal management
There
are cities all over the state of Alabama
that are facing problems with annexation.
Valley and Lanett are possibly heading
to court over annexation. By legislative
act the airport was brought into the
city limits of Lanett. According to
Joel Holley, Lanett city manager,
once it's inside the city limits of
Lanett, then they feel they have the
right to annex anything that is contiguously
touching that property. The town of
Vincent is facing their own set of
problems because Vincent extends into
2 different counties. Huntsville is
being referred to as "The Big
Bear," causing problems because
it's trying to surround Madison, which
is forcing Madison to annex more Limestone
land to prevent that. Athens Mayor
Dan Williams said that Probate Judge
Mike Davis said that annexations create
confusion for the county voters because
they have to go to multiple voting
precincts. It has also caused EMA
funding problems. Williams said the
people benefiting the most from annexations
are developers. He said most of the
landowners don't want to live in a
city. Annexations also have been known
to create confusion with police jurisdiction.
What my research shows me is there
are quite a few negative results.
I would like to know what the positive
results might be.

was one of the most magical periods
of my life. It always amazed me at
how many people from outside the local
area listened faithfully and called
the request line often.That winter
was when the great ice storm hit us
and basically paralyzed the community.I
tried to keep everyone up to date
with announcements from the power
company and had an absolute blast
doing it. Being on WTLS fresh out
of high school was my dream job. Back
then we actually played real vinyl
records. It was the only job that I
ever had that I couldn't wait to get
up and go to. Truth be known ,I should
have been the one paying Ned and Betty
for the privelege of working there.
Thanks for bringing those memories

I
am so glad we are getting new and
different restaurants here in Tallassee.
I mean we have two Chinese places,
when jacks gets built we will have
4 hamburger joints we used to have
2 Mexican places, and we have 2 pizza
places. We need something new. We
need a Arbys where KFC used to be
and a Captain D's where Borderline
used to be I have been saying that
for a while now and every time i say
it everyone says its a good idea.
Maybe putting this on here and letting
everybody else read it will put the
word out and hopefully get other things
in the Tallassee area - Samantha
