City's Appearance (2-23-10)

to those people who gripe about how our city looks I have this suggestion, start paying city workers better !!!!!! Tallassee city workers are THE LOWEST PAID city personnel in the state and surrounding states, anyone wanting to prove me wrong on this, do some research and you will see.. The average city employee has to be experienced in everything from backhoes to chainsaws, from welding to bush-hogging and the list goes on and on, but the average city employee's pay is around 8.50 an hour and still they do their best with 1960's model equipment, without griping.. oh and the thing with benefits is a joke, they have to pay for those and they are NOT cheap. For instance , the average Auburn city employee starts off at around 11.00 an hour, with the equipment they need to do the job. I could go on and on but I wont, but the next time you see a city employee, think about what situation their in before you say they aren't doing their job - tired citizen

Hardees (2-23-10)

If i were the owner of the oldest eating establishment in tallassee, i would be darn well concerned that it might be the next casualty of this town's culinary cemetary. I remember when we all came out to the grand opening of our Hardees and everyone put on their sunday best to welcome them to town. Service was great and everyone was excited to finally have "fast" food without having to drive a half hour to get it.

My latest experiences with Hardees was saturday night and today. Saturday night the drive through was backed up so i went in to order. No one was at the counter and one couple was waiting for their food. After about 5 minutes, someone took my order. After waiting another 15 minutes, about 8 people were waiting behind me and no more orders were taken. I was fortunate to get my 1 burger after about a 20 minute wait and the people in front of me were still waiting. Still, no one else's order was taken. When i walked out, 1 car had got their order and people were honking their horns.

This morning about 10, I drove through to get a sausage biscuit. The car in front of me waited about 5 minutes to order after being asked to wait when they pulled up. There were no cars in line ahead of the car in front of me. When i pulled up to place my order, I was asked to wait to place my order. I kindly responded and said no and proceeded to place my order "I would like 1 sausage biscuit". I was obviously talking to myself because no one else was listening. I drove off in disgust. I could have made that 30 minute drive to montgomery and got my food faster than waiting in line at the slowest fast food joint in the world - Hungry Tallasseean

Hardees (2-23-10)

I wouldn't care if Hardees did close. I have not been there in quite sometime and will never eat there again. The last time I was there I ordered the sausage and biscuit combo. The posted price was $3.99. When the order was served the "gentleman" behind the counter said $4.79. Tax on $3.99 is not 80 cents. I questioned him about the total price. He said, yes $4.79. I explained the tax should not be 80 cents. He explained to me that you price the products in a combo separately to get to $4.79 and I explained to him that the combo was $3.99 plus tax. We never agreed so I told him to keep his combo and walked out.

As far as Tallassee is concerned, I'm glad I don't live there. I was in the barber shop last week and several of us agreed that we hoped that the city limits were never extended to our property - An Elmore Co. resident

Downtown Development (2-23-10)

Saturday night, my wife and I decided to go out and eat dinner at a resturaunt somewhere that we have not been to before. We ended up at a place in Wetumpka since Tallasse does not offer any kind of variety of places to eat. The place we ended up at was called Coaches Corner. It is not a very big place, but the atmosphere there was so nice and the food was so good that I could not help but wish that it was in Tallassee, maybe in the downtown area. Then I realized that this could never happen in Tallassee because this resturaunt has televisions in it and also has a bar so it would be called a sports bar and this is something that our leaders in Tallassee would not permit. I just have to be honest about this, it is just such a shame that the people of Tallassee are going to be denied the opportunity to enjoy such things as this simply because a FEW people are imposing their will on the rest of us. We see every week that our so called leaders want to develope downtown. With what? What can you put downtown that will attract people? A new hotel? The motel does not even stay half full. It would take either an idiot or else someone with so much money to invest that losing it would not be an issue. Anyway, we left the sports bar that was full of people and so enjoyable and so cozy and we came back to Tallassee to a deserted and dark and cold downtown area. It looked like a ghost town and I truly beleive that if our leadership does not come out of the dark ages and start letting attractive businesses come to the downtown area that the downtown area and Tallassee as a whole will end up almost deserted by the people that live here and want to be able to enjoy things here that other places have. WAKE UP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE - Steve Segrest

Downtown Development (2-23-10)

Mr. Segrest, Tallassee has always been dead at night. When I was young we all had to meet in the Tallassee Shopping center. The city officals tried to stop that, it was the only place to go have fun and get together with friends. Mr. Billy Strength and Mr. Bowden always kept order and would ride through there to make sure we were having fun and there was no fighting. We need something for the adults to enjoy and something for all children to do. When is the NEW Rec center going to built? - Harriet McNelley

Rosewood Table (2-23-10)

Oue family has owned a home on Herren Hill Road for over 100 yeears. We have At Herren Hill we have never had any problem with break in or vandilisme. Our mother welcomed anyone to the house who was interested in it and its history. We had 4 break ins in the last 6 months. A woodem swing and a picnic table have been stolen. The kitchen table and front door have been destroyed. While there is very little of interest in the house now, one room was totally vandalized. There were many enclosed boxes holding kitchen item, vandalized. The one item we are devestaded about loosing is a Rosewood Table ( which was once a piano). It would have been very heavy to removed from the house---so we believe someone connected to the house helped us lose this item. If you know anything about this item , please let us know. or you can help us save this historic home, we will welcome your input - Alice Lee

Auburn Awards Mediocrity by J. Newcastle (2-23-10)

From the Montgomery Advertiser 02/23/2010, "Alabama, by comparison, spent 8 million on its coaches last season." Alabama just gave their defensive coordinator a $360,000 raise. Auburn will spend nearly 5 million in salaries compared to 4+ million for Coach Saban alone. The salaries for the Alabama coaching staff were set prior to Saban's first ballgame at the University. What was the record for these coaches? 6-6 for 2007. That is not even mediocrity. All that being said, I still think that coaches salaries are obscenely out of line - Ron McDaniel

From the Hill (2-23-10)

This is in reference to the point made about drug tests for public assistance. I have so many issues with this. First of all drug tests are an invasion of your personal privacy, which is suppose to be protected from illegal searches and seizures according to the 4th Amendment to the Constitution. Urinalysis specifically, doesn't detect any active drug, just the presence of drug metabolites and since most drugs are water soluble, they leave the body within 1 or 2 days. The number 1 drug detected is Cannabis, which is fat soluble and can stay in your urine for months. Second, People on public assistance and people who are not, spend their money on legal drugs such as Alcohol and Cigarettes. So we are to make a distinction between the deadly legal drugs and non lethal, non addictive Cannabis? And who's appointed to make that distinction? Lastly, why do we always have to look at "illegal drugs" as the scourge of society? Addicts to hard drugs, believe it or not, need more help than general society because of the drug and the behavior that drives addiction. So instead of invading privacy of people, LEGALIZE. This would give the people on public assistance the chance to go back out in the working field, pay taxes and help them try to become valuable members of society. Just as the police need probable cause or a warrant to enter your house or car, the same should apply to your body, your most sacred temple, if a employer has reason to believe someone is under the influence at work, they should be made to submit to a test or be terminated if they refuse that test. The addicts can get help with the tax money used to buy the drugs legally. The last thing I wanna say is that prohibition leads to crime.. Remember alcohol prohibition? Take the legal means away for people to obtain their drug of choice, then you drive them to commit burglary and theft to supply their habit, so that solution only makes things worse, not better - Adam Robinson

__________

From the Hill (2-23-10)

In response to Mr. Robinson's post,I totally agree with you in the respect of more and more government intervention in our lives. It is no different than the "No smoking" ordinance that was enacted here locally.Slowly but surely ,all levels of government are taking away our freedoms. If we as parents educate our children, and our schools do their job of educating our children ,then prohibition is completely useless and a huge waste of taxpayer dollars. Our free market system makes ordinances ,the likes of our own prized piece of local legislation absolutely obsolete and and unnecesarily intrusive into the freedom of local business owners to make their own decisions as to what to allow at their places of business. It also allows the patrons of local establishments,to decide for themselves if they want to do business there. In my humble opinion ,the less government ,the better. If enough people tell the owner that they will not do business with them if they allow smoking ,the owner then can choose for him or herself what policy to make .The free market system works if government will learn that we aren't a bunch of children that need to be told everything to do and not to do.It's not about smoking as much as it is about freedom to make our own choices as business owners and patrons of those businesses. If think about it ,every loss of another freedom carries two price tags ,the loss of the abilty to make your own choices, and there always seems to be a monetary penalty if you choose not to abide by it.what a way to make money for a municipalality huh? -Derrick Hartley

__________

From the Hill (2-23-10)

I completely agree with drug testing for welfare recepients , it has to be done in the workplace, to enforce safety issues and productivity.

The welfare system is broken, this would be the first step to getting it back on the right track. Excluding individuals with permanent physical or mental disabilities, no one should be on welfare more than three or four months. The present welfare system (the way it is set up) allows individuals to draw money out of my pocket indefinately, any individual that says it should be legalized apparently would gain from it's legalization. "The argument" that alcohol is legal so should be illict drugs, is not even in this equation. If you work for me and you come to my job drunk or high, it is your last day.

Being on welfare your sole purpose should be to find a job and become productive so you do not need a hand out. If you are taking government money (ie) my money, you don't have a private life because you put yourself in the governments control, there should be no difference being on welfare as far as rights are concerned, as being in the military - Terry "Beartrapper" Smith

__________

From the Hill (2-23-10)

Everyone and everybody that get governmental money, should be required to take the "simple urine test" for drugs. If they fail the test, the monies should be withheld. I feel that to receive these monies, the person needs to be in need for rent, food and essentials for living. Using drugs is illegal and for only one's pleasure - Ann Mayes

__________

From the Hill (2-23-10)

In rebuttal: Think of it this way.If all drugs were leagal, and had always been that way, then we as parents and other educators would bear the responsibility of teaching our children the dangers of them. We'd actually have to be even more vigilant than we already are. When the only alternative that you can offer is punishment, then you start out with a broken system. You certainly have the freedom to touch that red hot stove eye, but you don't because you know what will happen(so far there does not seem to be an ordinance against that ,YET) Education ,not prohibition and suppressive laws is the answer. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is NOT about drugs or smoking ,it is about FREEDOM. I don't advocate drugs in any way shape or form ,but if all levels of government could divert the funds they currently spend on this "War on Drugs" (which has been an abyssmal failure at best)to education ,then we would have an actual government system in place that really would serve the people it governs.Would some people still use drugs,of course ,but as it stands now ALL citizens have the choice of whether to drink or smoke. If you're one of those proud folks that can say ,I've never drank or smoked ,then hurray for you,you probably wouldn't use drugs either just because they were legal. Is it so much easier to surrender the raising of our children to the government through the removal of individual liberty and freedom? A very wise man once said something to the effect of ,If a man sacrifices freedom and liberty for security ,then he deserves neither. The truth is ,we can have both - Derrick Hartley

EPERHAPS I'M NOT THE BEST PERSON TO COMMENT ON YOUR COLUMN SINCE I AM KNOWN IN SOME QUARTERS AS A BIT OF A NUT BUT I CAN ALMOST SMELL THE REEFER BURNING WHILE MR. ADAM ROBINSON WAS WRITING HIS LENGTHY DIATRIBE REGARDING THE TERRIBLE LAWS WE HAVE ON THE BOOKS IN OUR ONCE GREAT COUNTRY!

IF HE REALLY THINKS OUR DRUG LAWS ARE TOO RESTRICTIVE HE SHOULD SPEND A LITTLE TIME CHECKING OUT THE SORT OF PUNISHMENT THAT IS AVAILABLE IN MOST OF THE COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD FOR USING OR POSSESSING DRUGS!!

I WOULD ALSO THINK THAT SINCE WE AS TAX PAYERS ARE FOOTING THE BILL FOR THOSE ON WELFARE WE SHOULD HAVE SOME RIGHTS TOO AND IF I AM CORRECT IN THAT REGARD THEN A SIMPLE URINE TEST TO DETERMINE THAT OUR TAX DOLLARS AREN'T BUYING DRUGS FOR SOMEONE ELSE WOULD CERTAINLY BE RIGHT IN THE BALLPARK AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED!!

MY FINAL THOUGHT IS THAT IF MR. ROBINSON IS THAT UNHAPPY WITH OUR LAWS THEN PERHAPS HIS TIME WOULD BE BETTER SPENT WORKING TO REPEAL THE VERY LAWS HE SEEMS TO DESPISE AND HELP MAKE NEW AND BETTER LAWS.

YOUR WHOLE ARTICLE IS VERY GOOD RAY!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!! - R.C. GAUSE

Thank you Ray Hall! It is about time that someone elese realized this issue! I have always supported drug testing in every form. That is so true that if you are not working, yet receiving assistance (indirectly from people who are actually working)then you should have to take and pass a drug test in order to continue receiving assistance. That could possibly be one of the contributing factors that one on assistance can not get a job in the first place (because they are on drugs). I find it immoral to take hard earned money from working citizens and give it to someone who has no job and is using drugs(obviously not all cases are like this). That sounds like rewarding bad behavior to me! Almost every job today requires that you have a drug test, so why should not working exepmt you from having a drug test? I think that druging test people on government assistance and withohlding a check until a clean test is produced who force people to stop being drug addicts and actually become productive citizens - Jessica Tatum

I truly believe that anyone applying for public assistance should be required to take drug test. I pay taxes and it bothers me that we support a drug users habit when they use the money from welfare to by drugs instead of food and paying rent. Drugs should never be legalized.

The addicts can get help with the tax money used to buy the drugs legally. (sentence in red from an earlier post)Just what the world needs legalized addicts helping each other.

Ray, I agree with everything you said this week. Keep in mind that your view/opinion is Never Wrong. People can disagree with you but as an American Citizen ( Thank you to all who have made this possible) you have the right to speak your mind.

I totally think that Anyone in this country who gets Public Assistance should be subject to a drug test, background check and prove they are a US citizen. We are handing out Money,Food and Medical coverage to everyone that comes here. In the meantime, we have US citizens who are not getting the same help. I have a big problem with this as I know people who are affected by this.

Education is a big key to success. I know a single mother raising a now 15 yr old son. His drug addict father disappeared 8 yrs ago never to be heard from again. Thanks to a very expensive Christian school that provides scholarships he is able to attend. He is a very good athlete and colleges are already scouting him and he is a only a sophmore in high school. His possibilities of a bright future are because of this school. His mother will never have the money to send him to college.

Shopping carts are also my pet peeve. Usually for me when they are in a parking space it is raining or snowing. So yes, People, Please, put the carts in their designated areas!

Condolences to you and your family for the loss of your Uncle. I will say a prayer for ya'll.

I totally agree with you on the Taxation problem. A man killed himself, another man and injured others Over Taxes. Taxes- Money!! That is so messed up!! - Lynn Harrington (Dallas, Texas)

Haiti Relief (2-16-10)

To Area Churches and Pastors,

I am sure you have all seen the destruction that Haiti has experienced and the subsequent suffering being endured. Some of the images will just break your heart. Living Water Worship Center has a unique opportunity to help an orphanage and church in the small town of Grand Goave that was hit by the devastation and destruction. Often these small outlying orphanages and churches are the last to receive the needed supplies to help the devastated people of the area. Some of us personally know the men that help set up this orphanage and church, they are men of God who want to spread HIS word. We know there are many resources calling on Americans to help but sometimes you do not know where the money or supplies are really going. We have a direct connection with these people and know that the things we provide will be going directly to help these people. We are gathering supplies and raising money to help. Attached is a list of things that we are gathering. We ask that your church be in prayer for this effort and help us in any way that you can.

Please visit www.churchquake.com to see the extraordinary work this group of men and women do.

Those interested in making donations can do so at Heart of Dance (the old AES building) or Sundays at 5 at Living Water Worship Center on Barnett Boulevard.

List of supplies needed include:

1). Shelter such as tents

JV Baseball (2-16-10)

Coach McDaniel & Mr. Butler commented on praised twelve members of the season's JV Team. Do he other members, who work equally hard practicing, weight-lifting, work on batting, given countless hours for "their team" not count? If an article is regarding a specific game, then certainly it is appropriate to single out the ones who made significant plays. That is to be expected and is needed to relay the game plays. It is not appropriate, however, to not include the entire team when introducing the season. It really hurt some guys' feelings to be overlooked in this article - as if they're not members of the team. Most all of these guys have played since T-ball, giving years to their team and their game, and to not even mention their names is hurtful. Coach, is this how you plan to build morale on your team? There is no I in TEAM, the team consists of all the young man. As one young man said, "Don't they even care that I'm on the team?" This was not meant to take away from the very capable abilities of the guys mentioned, but to point out that you should consider the entire new season's players - T-Tiger Fan

JV Baseball (2-16-10)

I am an outsider to the Tallassee Baseball program, but have heard good things about it and have recently become good friends with Coach McDaniel. Therefore, I feel a connection to it now and will be attending a few games this season to see what Coach McDaniel has done with the guys. But the fact that someone could attack Coach McDaniel on the basis of this article is startling. He had nothing but good things to say about his boys and even commented on the depth they have throughout the roster. You have to realize that the writers of these articles don't include every word the interviewee (Coach MacDaniel) says throughout the interview. So what if the comments that the writer decided to include only referred to 12 of the 19 guys? Coach may have mentioned all his guys by name and the writer only included a few. Coach made it clear that he was confident in ALL his guys. I am good friends with Coach McDaniel and he has nothing but good things to say about his guys and has made it clear that he is proud to be their coach. And when I was talking to him, he didn't single out 12 of his 19, he was proud of all of them. As an outsider to the program, I can look at the article without bias to any certain kid, and it was clear that Coach was doing nothing but bragging on his guys. Just because your boy's name wasn't included in the article doesn't mean Coach McDaniel doesn't care about him or isn't proud of him. Any parent who has or shares views similar to those negative ones being posted on this site or elsewhere, I suggest that you stop being so sensitive or you and your boy are going to have a long season and career in baseball - StraightTalker

The comments on this article are so typical of the curent problems with the Tallassee baseball program. The complete program has become a disgrace and embarassment to the guys who put Tallassee baseball on the map. ( No, not Ronnie Baynes ) The players that won titles and championships in highschool and youth programs for years and years. Complaining because your child wasn't metioned as part of the team? Give me a break! Tallassee baseball will continue to suffer and wallow infall below mediocrity until the time comes again when just wearing the jersey with "Tallassee" on your chest is not good enough. The parents aren't concerned with winning. They just want everyone to know " My son plays for Tallassee. " News Flash parents playing baseball for Tallassee isn't that big of a deal anymore. They haven't been good in a long time and the blame falls on the parents that have run the program in the ground because little Johnny isn't getting to play or the coach talked to him ugly.

Shout out to the guys who made the program great years ago. Mid 80's to late 90's players. I know the hard work you put in because I was there working with you. Maybe when more of our kids get there we can turn it around. I know most of you feel the same way - Former Tallassee Tiger

I appreciate all of his hard work and dedication to these fine young men. Have you ever been on radio or interviewed by the newspaper and forgot everything you had planned to say? I have. I am proud to have Coach McDaniel as a friend and fellow coach - Member of Team Tallassee

JV Baseball (2-16-10)

As one of those "former Tallassee Tigers" and also one of those ones that probably wouldn't have been mentioned in an article like this back then and also now being a parent of an 8 and 10 year old that compete in sports I feel pretty qualified to speak on this subject. Part of the success of those Tallassee baseball teams in the mid 80s to late 90s were that they were selfless. None of us "un-mentioned" types (to my knowledge) would have ever complained to OUR parents that 'they must not care about us'.

Are you serious, un-named JV baseball player? When I played (OK warmed up the right fielder and pinch ran because I was fast, HA!) it was an honor and a privilege (not a right, mind you) to even put on the Tallassee jersey and represent all that had come before me and my town which I loved. I remember when I was given #17 not even caring that it wasn't a "famous #" or that someone great hadn't worn that number. I'd have worn 000 if Coach Baynes had given it to me.

I know that Craig McDaniel has all of his team's best interest at heart. I know how much he loves Tallassee athletics. As another former Tiger player mentioned, this is symptomatic of why this generation of Tallassee Baseball teams are not as successful as their predecessors.

Current parents: Leave these coaches alone and let them LEAD your boys and help them become MEN. They don't need you chirping for them, they are capable of handling things themselves, on the field where it counts.

Go Tallassee Baseball! - Jason Cleghorn

__________

JV Baseball (2-16-10)

I agree with all the supporters of Coach McDaniel. Jason Cleghorn said it best when talking about the problems with THS baseball and the distractions. The parents want to tell the kids how great they played regardless if they won or loss, always coming up with excuses to make the kids feel better. I was one of those that dreamed of putting that purple pinstripe on as a little kid growing up and would have been happy with sitting on the bench as long as I had that opportunity. Fortunately I was one of those that has a ring to go along with my experience and is something that I am proud of to this day. We won games even before we got off the bus because teams felt defeated based off of the tradition that THS baseball possessed.

I looked up to those that had come before me and wanted to be as good as they were and I did whatever it took to try and accomplish that. There were many times where I felt that I should have been playing over someone else, but I took that as a challenge to work harder. My parents accepted the fact that if I was not on the field that I was just not good enough at the time. It was up to me to make that happen.

Growing up playing with Coach Clayton, I know he feels the same way that I do and understands what it means to play for THS. Hopefully he can get the kids to understand what we felt growing up and how we would have done whatever it took to win every game. Losing didn't happen much and when it did we were ticked! Good luck to the THS staff as they strive to get THS baseball back on track - Abe Rigsby

I don't have any sons playing, but my cousin does and I didn't want him to feel left out. Everyone who responded is right, and I am sorry. I appreciate all the coaches do and I hope my cousin will keep on playing with all his heart, even though he has never been a "star" or a standout or even got to play a lot over these years, it says something about the coaches that he still keeps getting out there. Town Hall Meeting for Schools Monday (2-16-10)

"What Dr. Jeffers and the School Board has accomplished during his tenure has been remarkable. No one has done more with less. For many years, the Tallassee City Schools has been the one redeeming quality in a town that has regressed over the past 25-30 years. Tallassee is quite blessed to have such a person with his character and qualifications.

Should Dr. Jeffers salary be the main issue, then perhaps there are no real issues at all,\" says the man who has basically made a living on the drawings for all the archictectural drawings through Walter M for THS during Jeffers tenure. That\'s pretty sickening there Bobby, you can wipe your nose now. Would you be doing this had Barganier rendered all the drawings? It\'s highly doubtful -: Clean tipped nose

Haiti SMS (2-16-10)

I think was a great thing to open your hearts and give to these children.I wish there was a way that the community could come together and send much needed things such as shoes, and clothes. But I have no way of knowing how to do this. Maybe our Mayor and City Council can come up with a way and post it on Tallassee Times. What about it Mayor? - Peggy Suggs

Get My Point (2-16-10)

A wonderful article, Judy. I enjoy your articles each and every week. Noel and I have reached the age where we have seen so may changes in the world. There are very few TV programs that we watch and we really can't believe the changes in our world and they aren't always for the better. Satan is trying so hard to get his hold on all of us. I pray that everyone will keep praying, reading their Bible and teaching God's word. Keep up the good work of spreading God's word - Cathy Darnell

Get My Point (2-16-10)

When I was little and would go to my Grandparents house. My Papa would sleep on the couch and let me sleep with my Mama. We would talk and she would tell me stories of when she was a little girl. She always said her prayers and I said mine to and then we would go to sleep and wake up feeling good the next day because we knew the Lord had listened to our prayers. My daughter slept with my Mom up until she was 20 years old. She loved her grandma very much and liked to hear the stories of my Mom's childhood. Mom always had something different to tell her. It is wonderful when you have a chance like that in life - Harriet McNelley

Annexation (2-16-10)

I must have missed something. The mayor said at the beginning of his statement Quote: "We get half the retail sales tax by being in the police jurisdiction, but if it's in the city limits we get all of it," McCain said.

Ok, that's simple enough to understand. The above referenced the annexation in Tallapoosa county. Clear concise, and to the point. However, further on when referring to the Macon county annexation he said Quote: "They're afraid we're going to take their retail sales tax away from them."

Again, direct and to the point. My only question is simply this, which one is the truth? According to the mayors first quote about retail sales tax ,sounds to me like the folks in Macon county do have a legitimate concern. Just wondered if anyone else caught that - Very, very concerned citizen

Annexation (2-16-10)

How about we take care of what is in the existing city limits instead of promising things we can't afford. does anyone think carrville is better off since they were annexed? how about instead of increasing the size of our city government with so many new employees durring a terrible recession, why can't we be more lean - Tallasseean

__________

Annexation (2-16-10)

I am really excited about the possibility of having a grocery store on the East side of Tallassee (Tallapoosa County Side). However, If put the store in the city limits of Tallassee you are taking all of the Tallapoosa County Tax Revenue. I am a resident of Tallapoosa County and I don't think that is fair.

I think that if the city limits move up that far that Tallapoosa County should get a percentage of the taxes. What if the shoe was on the other foot - Tallapoosa County Citizen

__________

Annexation (2-16-10)

Tallassee should grow. Tallassee also should take care of the current assets of the city.(riverfront, welcome center, guest house, etc) We have access to inmates from Elmore Cty I know, and I would guess the same is true for Tallapoosa Cty. All we have to do is feed them. Use them to clean-up the town. That would help them just as well as it would Tallassee. The riverfront below the guest house is something the city could use as a draw. Clean up the hillside, so you can actually see the river from the house which is located within throwing distance. Light the house with some accent lighting and watch that place standout as you come across Graveyard Creek bridge. Check the number of people who use that stretch of road come the warm weather.

I've also heard of a number of individuals who currently fall outside the city limits who would love to become a part of Tallassee. Most of those live in areas which in recent years have become populated with young families of Tallassee.(the new subdivisions up Hwy 229) We need the numbers, right. That would add to the number. Don\'t worry about providing the services, there are provisions which can be made to offset the cost of future services, for example sewage.

Hey, those are just the thoughts of a simple minded individual. This stuff is simple.

Almost forgot. You want to annex into Macon Cty. Talk their language, give them a little of the tax, and they will bite like crappie in early March - You Know

Dear Mr. Mayor & City Council,

I read your article about annexation to the interstate with great interest, "PLEASE" Mr.Mayor DO NOT give up on this effort. This has got to be and remain at the top of your agenda, almost all retail and manufactoring love to locate near interstates. Easy access for manufactoring and high traffic volume for retail and restaraunts. I can understand why macon county and shorter do not want to let go of this GOLDEN piece of land. PLEASE citizens of Tallassee, let\'s get behind our mayor and keep this fight alive for Tallassee's future. This is OUR exit - Tallassee Tiger

I totally agree with why someone could not have told her about the hat instead of making fun of her and smiling and she was so embarrased when she got home and found out. A true friend would have told her.

__________

Council Square (2-9-10)

I was not at all defending the city in their decision to sell city property. I am very concerned about what is happening in the town of Tallassee and do not take any of the council's decisions lightly. We rely heavily on sales tax revenues; I believe out of our one cent sales tax for the school, the school receives 80 percent and the city receives 20 percent. The powers that be need to either try to get more retail in Tallassee and pray people shop here or they need to cut back more or they need to let the people vote on a city property tax. I don't know what the answer is. Have you looked at some of what I call the city's forgotten streets? The ones with potholes? They cut out our recycle pick-up. We are in a mess. And no, I do not hock a truck title to buy beer. I don't drink beer. And no, not because I'm a snob. I just don't like it. And thank God I've never had to hock anything - Another Concerned Citizen

Jesus turned the water into wine. Using musky-dines to do the same may not be considered a miracle, but it's pretty darn snappy. You boys oughtta have a musky-dine wine tasting at the shell of the Hotel Talisi, since it's been deemed structurally sound by "engineers." - Todd from Tallassee

Trash Burning (2-2-10)

To the person burning trash/garbage this afternoon,

When I came home this afternoon my neighborhood had the most oppressive smell. Somewhere between Emfinger subdivision and W. Butler someone was burning trash/garbage. Whatever it was had thick black smoke that was staying low because of the weather. Please let the thrash/garbage service pickup your trash/garbage. There was lots of pollution in the air today that was not good for the lungs.

Thanks,

Irene Rodgers

Trash Burning (2-2-10)

Dearest Irene -

Just take it to the next city council meeting. I'm sure they'll go ahead and ban this too, just like smoking in public. What's next no grilling because the neighbors are vegetarians?

I realize the smell was bad, but it did not hurt you one bit. I'm sure it's gone now so just build a bridge and get over it

__________

Trash Burning (2-2-10)

I can empathize with Irene regarding trash burning. At times there has been much burning of trash/noxious substances in my own neighborhood. It is not just a question of foul smell (--if a major hog farm moved in on Hwy 229 I would be quite upset at the stench though it would do me no harm particularly). Burning certain types of trash can release harmful substances into the air. When anyone's eyes, nose and lungs sting, and not from the smoke alone, then there is a problem. I cannot work outside in my garden at such times, and I certainly do not want my two small children to be exposed to concentrated airborne carcinogens. Darn right indiscriminate trash burning (eg household trash, not leaves and brush) should be banned from city limits!!!!

Respectfully,

K. Pendergrass

College Football Scholarships (2-2-10)

Congrats to Mike Smith and the other Tallassee athletes for signing college scholarships. For the baseball players who have been accepted at Huntingdon College, you will play for a great program and receive a good education. For those who are still undecided, don’t worry. You have plenty of time to visit schools and talk to recruiters. As a former college kicker I know the feeling of being lost in the recruiting world. You have to sell yourself as a product. You have to make contact with the colleges and send them highlight films. Remember, if you are not a top 10 player most big time colleges do not know who you are. Your size and stats play a huge part in getting recruited. Your coach can send of out hundreds of films to schools and still never hear anything from colleges.

I had to make my own kicking film and send it to the colleges. I even tried out at a Mississippi Junior College. The tryout went good and I was asked to enroll and sit out the fall semester to allow a scholarship to open up. So I enrolled and two days before players reported to school I was told by the head coach that “I needed to explore other options.” So I contacted every school in the state of Alabama who had a football team. I received interest from one. So I walked-on. I spent two years there. I was red shirted my freshmen year and played in four games my sophomore year. I soon realized that the FCS School was not the place for me. So I transferred to Huntingdon College and played for Mike Turk. While at Huntingdon I enjoyed playing for a great coach, playing on a great team, and getting a great education. That was the best decision I made as a young adult. I left a school where I had a chance to get an athletic scholarship to go play at a school that doesn’t offer any. I credit all of my athletic and professional accomplishments to my coach and professors from Huntingdon College. If I had stayed at the FCS school I might not have ever received a scholarship and definitely would not have played for the Legendary Coach Mike Turk!

To all the athletes out there that haven’t signed a scholarship or heard from a school yet, stay positive. You never know what will happen. Continue to ask your coaches to send out film and contact schools. Colleges are fighting to get the best high school players in the nation. If you are not one of the best, then you have to show colleges that you are! You have to make them interested in you and see that they need a player like you on their team.

Yancey Gordon

Tallassee Basketball (2-2-10)

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the coverage this year with Varsity Girl's basketball! Yall have done a tremendous job of covering our team this year and we appreciate it! I listen every morning and read TallasseeTimes every week. My parents and family back home in Scottsboro read it as well. We play tommorrow on road at Beauregard at 6:30 (second game) against Beauregard (#1 seed). Valley and BTW play first at 5:00. If we were to win Thursday, we would advance to finals Saturday at 2pm and then both winners and loosers of that game adavnce to sub-regionals. If we lose Thursday, it is softball season I guess. The Girls are excited and are ready to go. They have worked hard this week and have been very spirited with good practices. It will take our best effort this year and some to win. They have the 2 Bellomy twins. Neverthless, thanks for your support and all you do for our coaches and kids, but more importantly, for friendship! have a great day! - Coach Winchester

DHR (2-2-10)

I very much enjoyed the article on foster children and the help that they need. I am so pleased with the people that become foster parents and give of their home and lives to care for these children making them a part of their home and lives. When I was a child my parents kept foster children and for a while I got to have a brother that I never had. We were always so close to the children and loved them as our own brothers and sisters. It was so hard to understand why some of these children were abused by parents. They were so sweet, scared and needing love so much. God will richly bless all who help these children. I feel also, strongly, about foster care for older adults that have no one to care for them. With supervision and care, they can be cared for in a home without going to a nursing home. I wish we had more of these homes. We care for my mother in our home and I wish that I had more room to care for others.

Thanks, Michael, for printing this article and making the public aware of this need - Cathy Darnell

DHR (2-2-10)

It was very sweet of you to post such high praise for foster parents. My husband and I foster parent. It has opened up a whole new world to us. Sure, it can be difficult at times, but the rewards are so great! You are right, it is very hard to see how children can be abused, neglected or mistreated by their parents. Foster children usually have so much love to give. Foster parenting also puts you in touch “with the good side” of the world. You quickly find out how many nice people are still out there in this mean and nasty world. I have not met one person involved in foster care that is anything less than terrific! The other foster parents you meet are just great. They are willing to share anything they have to help a foster child in need. The DHR staff is great and is there for any type of support you may need. I have been truly amazed at the generosity of the citizens of this community. We have some that have gone well above and beyond the “call of duty.” At the end of the day you know that you have made a difference in a child’s life and there is no greater feeling than that. I know one of the main reasons people do not foster parent is because in many instances you have to “give the child back.” My response to that is if you were a doctor or a nurse who happened to be assigned to a terminally ill child, would you refuse to treat that child because you know you have to give that child back (to God)? Or would you like to offer that child as much comfort and love that you could give them, hoping to make the transition as smooth as possible? When you stop and think about it, it’s pretty much the same concept. I would encourage anyone that is in the position to help these children to do so. Even if you can’t keep a child in your home there are many, many other ways to help. I also totally agree with you on fostering older adults to keep them out of a nursing home. I was the primary caregiver for my grandmother until she died 2 years ago. She had a horror of going to a nursing home. I always promised her that I would do everything in my power to keep her out of one and I did. Once again, the rewards are great. There is not one day that goes by that I stop long enough to reflect on those days. I also encourage you to offer your support to someone who is the caregiver for an older adult. It is so demanding and there are so many ways that you can help - Cindy Foster
