New TFD chief Eric Jones

Keeping up with the Joneses

By Michael Butler

One Jones is passing the torch to the other. Travis Jones recently announced his retirement from the Tallassee Volunteer Fire Department after 26 years with the department, the past seven as chief. Now, his younger brother Eric is taking the reins.

"He is the right choice because he loves the department the way I did," said Travis. "He will do great because he has been mentored by some the best in the business."

Eric, like his brother Travis, is a Tallassee native. He graduated from Tallassee High School in 2004.

This is Eric's 16th year with the Tallassee Fire Department and tenth year with the Department of Defense as a federal firefighter. In his time of service, Eric has obtained a variety of certifications that he said "helped him build a unique skill set" that will benefit the TFD.

"I'm honored to be my brother's successor," he said. "I am willing to continue with the improvements that he started. I look forward to serving the citizens of Tallassee and the department in this new role.”

Travis offered some brotherly advice.

"I told him is to stay humble and remember it's only about them. Them being the citizens of Tallassee and the communities we serve."
