Hammock new mayor-elect

By Michael Butler

Johnny Hammock will become Tallassee's third mayor since 1988. Hammock defeated George McCain in the Tuesday, Oct. 4 runoff by a landslide margin, 781-261.

In the race for Tallassee City Council Ward 2, Sarah Hill defeated Matthew Miller 109-94.

Hammock received 41 percent of the votes in the August election to McCain's 21 percent, with candidates Jeanna Kervin and Trey Taylor splitting the remaining vote count. In the runoff, Hammock increased his numbers to 75 percent.

"It's been a long four months of campaigning," said Hammock. "I couldn't have done it without Team Hammock. I certainly couldn't have done it without God. I prayed to him every night. I'm overwhlemed."

There were 1,218 votes cast for mayor in August. There were 1,042 that voted in the runoff last week.

Vote totals have been on the decline in Tallassee for the past three election cycles. In 2012, 1,384 voted in the general election with an actual increase in the runoff of 1,455. In 2008, 1,505 turned out to the polls.

This was McCain's third bid at mayor after winning in 2008 over Bobby Payne and losing the rematch in 2012.
