Downtown improvements coming

By Michael Butler

Visitors to the downtown Tallassee area will see changes in the coming months. The City of Tallassee has received a Transportation Assistance Program (TAP) grant.

$725,000 in funds will be applied for work on sidewalks, pavers, handicap ramps, landscaping, lighting and minor infrastructure. The area encompasses the block across from the Tallassee Police Station from Sistrunk Street to James Street, Ann Avenue and Barnett Boulevard.

Federal dollars will cover 80 percent of the costs, or $580,000. The city's match will be 20 percent or $145,000 plus engineering fees.

The goal is to have plans complete with construction underway by summer of 2019.

I know it will be a little bit of an inconvenience for people," Tallassee mayor Johnny Hammock said of the work to come, "but the end product will be great. I'm hoping that it revitalizes downtown."
