Volleyball season starts today

By Michael Butler

This will be Tallassee head volleyball coach Katie Rigsby's eighth season with the program. And, she believes this group is the "toughest" yet.

The Tigers will be battle-tested as Rigsby has stacked the deck with stiff competition including the area schedule in Class 5A which includes a defending champion in Saint James. The Trojans are moving up in class thanks to the AHSAA's new completitive balance rule.

"We're ready. It's time. We've been practicing for a long time," Rigsby said. "These girls are ready to get on the court."

THS opens the varsity season at Valley this afternoon (Sept. 4) at 4:30. Plus, it is an area match.

"It's a big one. Our first three matches are area matches. It's hard starting off in area, but I think we're ready. These girls have experience. It's not their first rodeo. It's probably one of the toughest schedules we've ever had as a program. I think that motivates them. It's definitely going to allow our program to go to the next level. I'm looking forward to it."

As for the team, Rigsby has high hopes.

"We're going to see some bumps in the road as expected with a tough schedule, but I've probably got one of my most talented teams. I've got gamers. They're really silly at practice sometimes, but when it's time for games it's like they flip a switch. They're a fun group to be around. I couldn't ask for a better 11. I think this team's going to do something special."
