Track boys win sectional, state this week

By Mark Baynes

The Tallassee High School track team competed at the Class 4A/Section 3 meet this past weekend at Beauregard. Sectionals determine which athletes will run in the state meet held in Gulf Shores. The boys team finished first and the girls were ninth.

The boys had a number of medal winners and nine state qualifiers.

Tallassee head coach Danny Worley was extremely proud of both the girls and boys teams.

"We knew going in the boys would have a shot at winning a third sectional title in the last five years if they showed up and did what they needed to do," he said.

Worley was very complimentary of Tallassee baseball and softball coaches Adam Clayton and Pat Love for
lending a couple of their players to compete at sectionals.

Kalvin Levett of the baseball squad won four sectional medals and started against Trinity in the second round of the playoffs during the weekend competitions.

Chloe Baynes and Belle Haynes of the softball team competed in track as well. Baynes won a gold in the high jump and scored points for the girls team in the javelin and hurdles. Haynes scored in the long jump event. Both girls will compete in the softball area tournament this week, not bad for two seventh graders.

The state meet starts on Thursday in Gulf Shores.

Worley knows the deck is stacked against his team for an overall title due to numbers but feels that Tallassee could bring home some individual medals.
