Stewart has record-setting weekend

By Michael Butler

Macey Stewart had quite the weekend. The Southside Middle School student competed at the USA Swimming Southeastern Championships in Huntsville and broke two records in her age group.

In the 11-12 100-yard freestyle, Stewart set a new record of 54.58. The previous record was 55.25 set by Michelle Harris in 1990. In the 200-yard free, Stewart topped Hadley Dowdle's 2:00.81 set in 2012 by more than a full second with a 1:59:08.

There were 50 teams combined competing in the Southeast Division.

Stewart began swimming at the age of four for the Tallassee Tiger Sharks under coach Donna Funderburk before beginning swimming year-round in the fall of 2017 with Auburn Aquatics under coach Erika Kinsaul.  She is also a member of the Tallassee High School team.
