World Series champs

"We Are the Champions," the rock classic by Queen, is now the chant for a group of Tallassee girls.

The six-and-under state champions are now Dixie Youth World Series champions. Tallassee's all-stars ran the table vs. the seven-team field in Alexandria, La. last week winning the finale 16-5 in four innings over Mississippi to claim the championship.

"We were 24-0," coach Ron Taylor said. "We played one practice game, so we're counting it. We were 25-0 through the all-star season."

The girls were paraded in on a fire truck last week with a police escort to welcoming fans for a ceremony at the Tallassee Recreation Center.

"We had four returners from last year's team. We knew we had a good core," coach Adam Clayton said of the team that won state last year and finished third at the World Series. "You couldn't ask for a better group of ladies and parents that supported us. They were there at practices for two and three hours. They gave up their summer to do this and it paid off for them. It's something they'll always remember."

Tallassee was the only team from Alabama to win a title among the 89 teams in the different age divisions represented.
