Softball team in area tourney this week

By Michael Butler

It has been a record-setting season for the Tallassee High School softball team. The Tigers surpassed the best single season win mark set last season (24 wins) with 29 this season, but there is still work to do.

Tallassee enters the area tournament this week as co-champions. The team has a 29-11 record. There was a ten-game win streak during that stretch. Still, the Tigers remember last year.

THS hosted last year's area tournament but failed to make the post-season.

The top two area teams will advance to the regionals in Troy. Tallassee expects to be in the mix.

Coach Pat Love's team has beaten some of the top teams in high school softball this year, among them are highly ranked squads in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll. Tallassee has beaten Vestavia Hills ranked No. 9 in Class 7A, No. 1 ranked Alabama Christian and No. 3 ranked Holtville in Class 4A and No. 4 ranked Prattville Christian in Class 3A. The Tigers were No. 9 in the final ASWA Class 4A poll.

"The team's got great potential to make it," Love said. "We have beat some good teams this year. We've also been down and come back and won against some good teams. I feel like we are more battle tested and ready for the rest of the season. They remember what happened last year in the area tournament and that keeps them focused on every game like it's your last. I'm very pleased where this team is and excited to get started."

The five-team Class 4A/Area 5 tournament starts on Thursday, May 3 in Holtville. No. 2 seed Tallassee plays No. 3 seed Dadeville at 3:00. It is a double-elmination bracket with the championship being played on Friday, May 4.
