THS to make the move back to 5A

By Michael Butler

Tallassee will be moving back up to Class 5A competition next fall. The Alabama High School Athletic Association released its reclassification numbers on Thursday. The realignment process occurs every two years.

Norman Dean, who coaches Elmore County - one of Tallassee's region opponents in 2017, called Class 4A/Region 3 the “SEC West.” Tallassee’s new region for football next year might be more like the NFC West.

Tallassee will be among five playoff teams in 2017 vying for four post-season spots. The combined records are 47-31 of the region teams.

Tallassee was 10-2 in 4A this past season, falling in the second round. Beauregard, state champions in 2016, went 10-2. Carroll of Ozark was 11-1.

In addition, Charles Henderson (6-5), Greenville (5-6), Rehobeth (3-7) and Valley (2-8) complete the football region. Tallasseee has competed against all six in region play at some point since moving up to 5A for the first time in 2006.

Things will be status quo for neighboring schools Elmore County and Reeltown. The Panthers will remain in Class 4A. The Rebels will be back in 2A.

Tallassee's basketball and baseball regions will include; Beauregard, Brewbaker Tech and Valley. (*Click on the links below for region/area alignments in all sports.)

The AHSAA averages enrollment numbers for 10th - 12th grades with 9th grade holdbacks. Tallassee's average is 430. Of 60 schools in the classification, THS is No. 43 based on the numbers.

New for next year, the AHSAA is implementing a "Competitive Balance" component based on a points system for private schools that will adjust classifications depending on the schools' performances in different sports.
