Tallassee improved to 2-0 on the season with a 28-27 victory over Charles Henderson in Troy, but yet again the Tigers had to hang on in the waning moments. It was a game in which the fourth quarter could not end soon enough for the Tigers.

After leading just 13-7 at the half, Tallassee built what seemed to be a commanding 28-7 lead in the fourth. Then the drama began to build as Hugh Fountain’s Trojans started their comeback.

Tallassee jumped on the board first on the game’s opening drive as senior quarterback Trey Cochran Gill scored on a one yard plunge. Chris Adams made the PAT and the Tigers were up 7-0. Charles Henderson drove deep into Tallassee’s territory before being stymied at the two yard line on a fourth and goal attempt. Tallassee then took over and began a march 98 yards to the endzone that ended with a 16 yard touchdown reception after Cochran Gill connected with senior wide out Davis Knapp. The PAT was no good, leaving the Tigers with a 13-0 lead. Charles Henderson scored with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter on a 95 yard drive of their own that was capped off by Trojan tailback Quintus Moss scampering down the sideline from 27 yards out. Their Pat was good and the Tigers headed into the locker room with 13-7 edge.

The second half is where it got wild. Tallassee scored twice in the third quarter. Junior wide receiver DiJon Paschal scored on a pass from Cochran Gill and senior tailback Dareus Williams scored on a short run. The PAT by Adams was good after Williams’ score and Knapp scampered in from the holder’s position for a successful two point conversion after Paschal’s touchdown. The lead was 28-7 with 11:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. Then the Trojan offense came alive. Trojan quarterback Corey Dennis became a rushing machine as he scored two touchdowns himself and one more was tacked on by Moss, Dennis’s final touchdown came with just 28 seconds remaining and the score stood at 28-27. The Trojans lined up for the game tying PAT, but a Tallassee defender was flagged for lining up in the neutral zone. After the ball was moved to the one and half, the Trojans elected to go for the lead and possibly the win. Corey Dennis tried to get wide around the right side, but the Tallassee defense stood tall and stuffed him once again. After an onside kick was recovered by the Tigers and the victory formation with a kneel down, the final horn sounded and the Tigers were 2-0 and 1-0 in region play.

Tallassee continues region play at home this week as Dan Klages’ Eufaula Tigers head north from the wiregrass. The kicking game played a major role in last year’s victory by Eufaula. The Tigers have been shaky in this area in the early part of the season. Eufaula comes in with a 1-1 overall record and a 1-0 region record after trouncing Booker T Washington 37-6 last week. After a shocking opening week loss to 3A Abbeville, it appears Eufaula has a new attitude and will be ready for a region showdown with Tallassee.
