THS readies for area tourney

Staff Report

Tallassee completes regular season play this week and will begin the area tournament on February 10 as the #4 seed and play at top seeded Valley. The Tigers lost at Russell County 84-64 on Tuesday and won at Bullock County 54-43 on Friday of last week. The Tigers are 12-13 this season.

Jermuny Skipper and Dijon Paschal led Tallassee scorers in the area game at Seale. Skipper connected on four three-pointers to score 23. Paschal had 20 points with eight rebounds and two blocks.

The game was knotted at 18-18 after the first period. When Darius Harris got into foul trouble in the second, the Warriors went on 19-9 run.

"They began half-court trapping, and we committed numerous turnovers in that quarter," Tallassee head coach Fred Drake said. "We could never mentally comeback from that. We have to learn and figure out how to keep Darius out of foul trouble. He needs to be on the floor at all times to run our offense and gameplan. He sometimes picks up unnecessary fouls due to trying to cover for teammates who get beat by their man.

"We need other guards to step up when he is not in the game due to foul trouble. Hopefully, it won't happen again. I have instructed him for the rest of the season to not foul no matter what, but to just let the other team score. I would rather have him on the court, and just give up two points to the other team."

Drake was pleased with the Tigers win on the road in Union Springs on Senior Night for Bullock County. "It was very big and a confidence booster," he said. "They had a huge crowd that was very loud. We were down 40-36 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. We outscored them 18 to 3."

The Tigers went to a 1-3-1 zone defense that clogged up the middle in the final period. "It confused them and was the difference maker along with our full court press in the fourth quarter."

Paschal had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Skipper added 15. Don Speake scored eight. Harris had seven points with six assists and two steals.
