Baker enjoying time as Trojan

By Michael Butler

Former Tallassee Tiger Jake Baker still gets back to see his younger brother, Andy, on Friday nights. Last week, he was in Rehobeth for the Tigers 39-14 victory.

Baker, a 2017 THS graduate, is now at Troy University, where he is officially a freshman with the Trojans football squad.

"It's a lot different from high school. First year I got redshirted, which was not a bad thing," Baker said. "I'm a little more comfortable working at center. Center is more difficult because you're basically the quarterback of the o-line. Coach (Neal) Brown has a great gameplan every single week, a great coach and great coaching staff. The players - the bond we have - is just unbelievable.

"It seems just like yesterday that I was a ninth grader coming up, Drew being a senior. Now Andy in his last season, it's definitely flown by."

The Bakers have made a big contribution to Tallassee athletics, not just on the football field. Jake and his older brother Drew were state champion wrestlers. Andy has placed as a runner-up and still has his senior season to shoot for an individual title.

"I tell (Andy) just be ready because this year is going to fly by. It'll be over way before you know it."

As for a day in the life a student-athlete at the college level, it's pretty booked up.

"You have treatment around 6:30. Then we have breakfast in the cafeteria. We usually have omelets. After that we have class from 9-1. We start meetings at 2:30 every day. We go from team meeting to position meeting, walk through, back to position meeting, then a team meeting. We finally go out and practice from about 4-6. Then we have dinner as at team from about 6-7:30.

"College classes aren't that much different than high school, just a lot more studying."
