Area tourneys this week
By Michael Butler
The Tallassee boys basketball team will host the area tournament this week. Last week was a historic one. The Tigers broke the win mark for most victories in a season.
Last year's team tied that number of 22 wins set back in 1969-70. Keiven Mixson's team is now 24-4 headed into the area tournament.
"The best was 22-3 in '69-(70)," said Mixson, whose club was 22-8 last season. "(It's) a big accomplishment for these kids. 50 years - wow! It may not be broken for another 50."
Expectations remain high for Tallassee to cross another hurdle. The program has not won a playoff game under the current playoff format.
This Mixson's third year at THS. His first two teams fell in the first round sub-regional game of the post-season.
Tallassee hosted Sipsey Valley and lost 59-51 in 2018. Last year, the Tigers were beaten by Charles Henderson in Troy 44-38.
"For three years we have built this program up."
It's "do or die" now. Tallassee plays Beauregard on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Stumberg Gymnasium - the same gym that was brand new for that '69-70 squad five decades ago. A win secures a playoff spot. A loss ends the season. The area title game will match the Tallassee/Beauregard winner with the Brewbaker Tech/Valley winner on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The No. 3 seed Tallassee girls are playing on Tuesday at Valley vs. No. 2 seed Brew Tech at 4 p.m. The winner advances to face the Valley/Beauregard winner on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
