Tigers playoff hopes dashed in Troy

By Michael Butler

The situation was familiar. Last year, Tallassee was primed for a playoff berth after a dominating win over Rehobeth.

The Tigers controlled their own destiny after a 21-6 win last week against the Rebels with two region games left to play.

A 27-0 loss to Charles Henderson on Friday was not the only dagger for the playoff hopefuls. Rehobeth beat Valley 12-7. The combination ended Tallassee's post-season dreams, akin to 2018.

The Trojans shut down Tallassee much like the Tigers did Rehobeth a week prior by holding THS to just 124 yards of total offense. To compound issues, Tallassee had four turnovers.

Zavion Carr rushed 18 times for 43 yards.

The shutout was the first of a Mike Battles' coached Tallassee team and the Tigers' first since a 35-0 loss to Benjamin Russell in 2011.

"In every phase of the game, they beat us," Battles said. "It was one of those nights. We couldn't do anything. We couldn't block them up front. Our kids played hard. They always do. We'll regroup. I know what kind of kids we've got."

The battle for first in Class 5A/Region 2 will be between Charles Henderson and Valley on Friday. Rehobeth clinched its first playoff berth in five years with the win over Valley in its final region game. Win or lose, Greenville holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over Tallassee for the final spot.

Tallassee closes out the season with two home games at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium beginning with Beauregard on Friday followed the next week by Elmore County for Senior Night. 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM will go live beginning at 6. Kickoff is at 7. Coverage is also available on Tallassee Times TV through YouTube, Spectrum Channel 97 and the TuneIn app.

*Last week's shutout loss broke a 97-game scoring streak at Tallassee.
