The season opener vs. Catholic
at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium last year

Tigers to have 9-game slate

By Michael Butler

It looks like the Tallassee football team will be playing just nine games in the 2019 regular season. Last year's week five opponent, Early County, Ga., was unable to renew for this year. The spot remains vacant.

That gives Tallassee back-to-back bye weeks, Sept. 20 and 27.

"I'm not excited about having two weeks in a row open," head coach Mike Battles said. "Last year we didn't have a real good outlook on having a tenth game and decided to play a team from Georgia. To get Early County to come we split the gate with them."

That out-of-state opponent gave Tallassee six home games last season. This year they have just four home dates.

"The thing about athletics in general is we have more kids competing at Tallassee in high school athletics than ever before. The stuff that they have to have to compete is more expensive than it's ever been. We want to go play in different places, but we also have to pay for it. It plays into it."

The first three games for Tallassee will be on the road (Aug. 23 - Catholic, Aug. 30 - Handley, Sept. 6 - Greenville) before the home opener vs. Carroll on Sept. 13. The two off weeks follow with another road game at Valley (Oct. 4) prior to homecoming (in more ways than one) on Oct. 11 against Rehobeth. Tallassee takes off for Troy vs. Charles Henderson on Oct. 18 and closes the regular season slate at J. E. "Hot" O'Brien Stadium hosting Beaurgard (Oct. 18) and Elmore County (Oct. 25).

*NOTE: 1966 was the last year that Tallassee played a nine-game regular season.
