The home Tigers extended their winning streak over the Handley Tigers to four games with a 16-12 victory Friday night. The win improved Tallassee to 2-0 on the season.

Defense ruled the game early. Tallassee scored at the end of the first quarter when Trent Cochran-Gill blocked a punt that rolled through the back of the endzone for a safety. Following the free kick, Markevious Matthews sprinted into the endzone on an 11-yard run. Quinton Jeter’s extra point put Tallassee ahead 9-0.

Handley was able to get on the board midway through the second quarter with a four-yard touchdown pass. Then, just before the half, a tipped ball fell into the hands of a Handley receiver took it 63 yards to the endzone. Both extra point tries failed but Handley held the lead at the half, 12-9.

After and extended halftime due to a weather delay, both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter. Tallassee took the lead in the fourth quarter with a 20-yard touchdown throw from Kalvin Levett to Matthews. Jeter’s extra point put Tallassee on top 16-12.

“That was two physical football teams you saw out there tonight,” said Coach Mike Battles. “They had the ball bounce their way right before the half. But our defense sucked it up time after time after time. Our kids are playing hard. As long as we do that we’ve got a chance.”

The defense was led by Cochran-Gill. The senior linebacker was credited with a punt block and eight tackles. His effort earned him the Spectrum Player of the Game honors.

Tallassee enters region play Friday night when the Greenville Tigers come to town. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM will broadcast live beginning at 6. The game will be simulcast on Spectrum Channel 97 with audio streaming on the TuneIn app and video streaming on YouTube.
