Tigers top Leeds for homecoming win

By Gary Buchanan

Homecoming brings thoughts of bonfires, parades, queens and a cupcake opponent for the hometown football team. After all, everybody wants to win homecoming.

Tallassee had everything last week except the cupcake opponent. The Leeds Greenwave rolled into town as the fourth ranked team in 4A football and sported a 7-1 record. The Greenwave left town at low tide, as the Tigers capped off the homecoming festivities with a 36-21 victory. The win improves Tallassee to 8-1 overall, 5 -1 in region play. Leeds dropped to 7-2 overall, 5-1 in region play.

Casey Baynes had an outstanding night, completing 11 of 16 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns. The first touchdown of the night went 15 yards to Markevious Matthews.  Matthews added a 22-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. Kalvin Levett added a 54-yard touchdown catch. Jake Burton caught a 20-yard touchdown as well.

“Casey Baynes is a ballplayer. He’s the guy you want to have the ball in his hands when it’s crunch time,” said Coach Mike Battles.

Matthews had another big game as well. In addition to his two touchdown receptions, he tallied a 28-yard rushing touchdown. He finished the night with 199 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Baynes and Matthews were selected as the Spectrum Players of the Game for their performances.

Coach Battles was pleased with his team’s performance. “This was a good team effort. The kids made some tremendous plays, but they’ve been here before.  This is the third ranked team we’ve played this year.”

Tallassee closes out the regular season with a final region matchup with Elmore County. The Panthers come in with a 2-7 record and will miss the playoffs for the sixth straight year.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. 1300 WTLS/106.5 FM will broadcast live with an airtime of 6:00. Audio will be simulcast on TuneIn Radio and Spectrum Cable TV Channel 97. Video is available on Tallassee Times TV.
