Tigers ready for 2016 baseball season

By Michael Butler

Tallassee will open the baseball season on Monday, Feb. 15 in Dadeville. Last year's team was 28-8 but are still steaming over the way the season ended.

"It's still in the back of their mind. They still talk about it all the time. It's a motivator," coach Adam Clayton said of the Tigers first round departure at the hands of Rehobeth.

THS took game one 9-6 but could not hold 4-0 and 5-0 leads in games two and three and lost the series. Most of last year's cast are back in 2016.

"We ran into a buzzsaw," Clayton added. "We should have advanced further than what we did."

Clayton is optimistic about this year's squad with experience and depth across the board.

"We're really excited about the guys that are coming back," Clayton said. "This will be Reid Whitaker's third year starting behind the plate. Will Peters has been at third base for two years and may actually play a little at second this year when he's not on the mound. Dee Williams will probably be sliding over to center field. We've got Dylan Hathcock and Cody Hamilton."

Clayton expects to have one of the best pitching staffs that Tallassee has had in a some time.

"We've got Dylan Hathcock back, Dee Williams and Will Peters. Blake Dean will probably be getting some time on the mound as well as Cody Hamilton. He threw a lot in a closer role. Casey Baynes will probably get some time. We've got about half the team that can throw."

Southside Field will be the venue for this year's Field of Dreams Tournament. Dadeville, Reeltown, Benjamin Russell, Park Crossing, Elmore County, Holtville and Horseshoe Bend will be in Tallassee for the week-long tourney that begins on Monday, Feb. 22.
