Baseball team misses post-season, Clayton stepping down
By Michael Butler
It was "do or die" last week in the final area series of the season for the Tallassee High School baseball team. With Pike Road clinching the Class 5A/Area 5 title with its win over Tallassee on Monday, the Tigers and Beauregard were playing for the runner-up spot and other playoff berth.
The Hornets (11-14) won the first game of the series on Thursday at Beauregard 13-2 in five innings. They followed it with a 13-5 win in Tallassee on Friday. The series loss eliminated the Tigers from post-season contention.
Tallassee (7-16-1) fell to Elmore County on Monday 6-3 to end the season. The Tigers graduated four seniors from the squad. Coach Adam Clayton announced to the team last month that he would be stepping down at season's end.
"This group of seniors have been through so many things and they have remained steadfast with everything put before them," said Clayton. "They will always hold a special place with me because they are my last group at Tallassee. I appreciate all the work they have put in and I look forward to see what the future holds for all of them."
Jacob Dantro, Jacob Ingram, Jake Manning and Ethan Stevenson are Tallassee's seniors.
Dantro and Ingram have already signed scholarships to play college baseball. Dantro will be playing at Central Alabama Community College. Ingram will be attending Southern Union State Community College.
