Baseball team opens this week

There were high hopes for the second half of the 2020 Tallassee High School baseball season. Area play was about to begin for a senior-laden squad.

We all know now the rest of the story. The season ended on March 12. Tallassee's ten seniors had played their final high school games.

The Tigers were 8-6 in the shortened season.

"It was super tough on us," head coach Adam Clayton said. "It was one of our biggest classes (of seniors) we've ever had. It was tough for that group and difficult for the underclassmen as well. This group is ready to get going. We'll get in as many games as possible. That was the thing last year. We were lucky to get in what we did."

To make up for lost time, the team has been working hard in the off-season.

"We've been going since early September with winter workouts, weight room workouts and throwing programs. Fortunately, the AHSAA allowed us two hours a week with the whole group at one time rather than having to do the one-on-fives. We were able to get most of the guys together that were not in winter sports. Right now we're still missing about eight guys that are still wrestling and playing basketball."

Ingram

One strength of the program should be on the mound with two seniors, who have already signed to play at the next level. The two Jacobs; Ingram and Dantro, give Clayton arguably his best one-two punch since a couple of other to-be college players were on the high school diamond.

"You'd have to got back to 2017 when we had (Will) Peters and (Dee) Williams. We're very excited to have both of those guys. We've got six seniors. We've got some young guys that have been throwing really well. Elijah Bridgman, (a junior), is a lefthander. Hunter Timmerman is a sophomore. We've got one guy on basketball that will be throwing that we're excited about - Tae Collins, (a senior). We've got a solid staff."

Expections, as always at Tallassee, are high.

"With the lineup that we're going to put together, once we get all our guys back, we feel really good about where we are. Looking at it on paper, it looks really good. Our goal is to first win the area championship and get a playoff berth. Once you're in the mix, you might get hot at the right time and make a good run."
