Tallassee Now! full of activities

By Michael Butler

The Tallassee Now! weekend kicks off on Friday, June 10 at Bell Park. The city-wide celebration and championship barbeque cook-off includes a variety of events.

"Tallassee Now! is going to be such a big event," Tallassee Chamber of Commerce director Michone Roye exclaimed. "There a lots of things to do regardless of age or your interests."

A karaoke contest and music by Kevin Adair will start the festivities. Food vendors will be on hand with tasty treats.

The 5K Color Run is also a part of Friday night's lineup. Each participant of the run will receive a glow necklace or bracelet.

"We have a wine tasting and local book author signings at the Trophy Room. The Farmer's Market will be beside the Mt. Vernon Theatre, which will be open for touring. They'll be art there and at Trustmark Bank. There will be several things at the football stadium. That's where you'll pick up your barbeque plates," said Roye.

Barbeque plates are available for only $1 for those with receipts of $100 or more in Tallassee dated between May 15 - June 7, 2016. Redeem coupons at the Tallassee Chamber of Commerce office by June 7 at 17 Sistrunk Street, downtown. Plates may be picked up from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.

"Tallassee Now! is a barbeque elebration," said Dale Segrest, who came up with the annual concept. "Beginning with the Tallassee Now! event last year, we have sold $102,062 worth of barbeque and raised $58,752 for charitable work. At Tallassee Now!, we celebrate this year of achievement!"

A special recognition honoring former players of legendary coach J. E. "Hot" O'Brien will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the field house of the stadium that bears his name, followed by a walk around the playing field at 11:00. Players from the 1940s and 50s that plan on attending are encouraged to contact Eddie Frank Britt at (334) 283-2722 or Bill Patterson at (334) 799-7723 to let them know that you are coming.

Also at the stadium will be the car show and VFW motorcycle show. The quilt competition will be at City Hall on Friday and Saturday. The Confederate Armory tours and Thurlow Dam tours return this year as well.

"There are so many events," Roye added. "If you want to know the details, go to www.tallasseenow.com. There's an event schedule with times for everything that's going on."
